Viking battle axe: Long hafted axes were used in combat by skilled warriors to break up enemy lines. They were one of the most feared weapons of that time. In this video, I demonstrate the power that can be generated by wielding a two handed bearded Viking axe. Please note that most Dane axes would have had a more upswept blade than my axe has. I do not claim that my axe is a replica of historical finds, but we do know that this design was used at least from the early Viking Age.

The excellent thing about the Dane axe is, that you can use the head of the axe for the killing strikes, and the shaft or haft, as a quarterstaff, for defense and parrying an opponents weapon in close quarters combat. In addition, the blunt top of the axe could also be used to apply force in a push tactic, without necessarily killing an opponent. It is quite a versatile weapon and tool.

"Hey...I can still eat this, so I'm not going to throw it away..." He sounds like my husband raiding the fridge. The axe looks like an effective weapon, and like my husband the narrator is an impressive example of a human male. The name Bjorn means "bear", and it suits him!

That’s dried meat and realy hard, so this would go clean through almost any part of a human. Long reach to go over shields or hook them and pull down and long enough to reach a person wielding a sword. I think you can see this type of axe in action if you search «Wolin Festival» in Polan, it’s the closest thing you get to a real viking battle. My god it’s a mess of crazy people! :D

That was a very interesting video. It is sobering to think of the force that weapon can generate. Ive read that the saxon atmy had men with two handed axes that they swung around in circles before striking their target. They had to go in front of the shield wall so that they didn't hit their own compatriots. It was said they could slice a horse "in twain". Your video is an excellent reenactment. Thanks for making the video!

Warriors using the dane axe were usually part of a 2-man team. The front man would have a shield and a 1-handed weapon, and would draw the main attention. The axe wielder would be behind the front man, and off to a side slightly. He could attack from over his partner for attacks from above, or around the sides to either catch an unguarded opening, or even to go for the legs of an opponent - either with a hooking attack, or pure damage.
@robertcorbell1006

I take it that this would be your weapon in battle while the bow would be your tool for providing food for the raiding party when in character. While two-handed weapons rely on being able to block with stave-like techniques and can leave one vulnerable without a shield, you can still by-pass most shields by hooking them down or pulling them aside while also breaking through certain armors. Part of the reason this is a cool and very useful, not to mention deadly and effective weapon. :)

A very impressive weapon, and versatile. You could pull a shield down, hook behind your enemies foot , reach over other warriors and chop, or if the fight wasn't so crowded that you could swing it wide, decapitate or remove limbs in one swing.

Such a simple and, dare I say, elegant weapon. I have a woodworking axe made by Gransfors, which is just like a short version of this. It is my favourite axe as it is so versatile. The shape of the head also probably evolved from conserving the cost of very expensive steel. By making the body and throat thin and giving the bit a hooked shape, you have a lot less steel and still a long cutting edge.

Probably the biggest missconception about two handed weapons is just the "they are big and slow" while often (but ofc there are exception) wepons like the Dane axe in the right hands can be faster and more controlable than a one handed weapon.

Cool video. I don't remember where I read it, but I was under the impression that berserkers were not real, insofar as they weren't mad men frothing at the mouth. I supposed they may have been what you described - a means to create panic in the enemy with axes. And campfire stories told to frighten. Schola Gladitoria recently did some tests with a dane axe (based on a museum example), and they were also impressive.

That’s a very interesting question. Lots of skeletons have been found showing healed up battle wounds, even to the head, how did they treat such serious wounds? Vikings were not the only warriors in the world at that time; I don’t know where to find info about this, but it must be out there somewhere. In Scandinavia, “Vølve” was the name of wise women, who had a substantial knowledge of a wide range of medical herbs to treat different conditions, they also used hallucinogens such as henbane to ease pain and “witchcraft” (=placebo effect, I guess...).
@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen

It is very intriguing to look into this. We have the parly mythic assumption that they would use onion soup to smell if inner organs were punctured etc. And we know they at least sometimes survived having a limb severed. Apart from that, it's a lot of guesswork. We do know, however, that some things that can only be cured with modern medicine would kill them. For instance, they were vulnerable to infections and parasites.

Thank you, mr Wiltshire! It is now quite cold here in southeastern Norway, but not much snow. I miss the green leaves tremendously, as I always do at this time of the year! (If anyone reads this comment, do check out his channel, it's awesome!)

I have the Hanwei Danish War Axe. Different blade style and mine is on a more agricultural style handle, oh and its not the one I am holding in the picture. :) Good Video.

I read somewhere that the tactics in battle was to lure each other into ambushes and fight there. A little like you can see in Robin Hood films. So an axe like that would have been useful in an clearing in the forest or on a field. If I could like this video 10 times I would.

Your bit could be used for wood working. Other types were thin and light and made only for felling men not trees or wood working. If you read about the Danes and later the Saxons who used these axes they were the elite fighters of their time, like our special operations forces today. Love your axe, I'm a axe man, and your clothing. Thank you

Great video again, Bjorn. You are right in your conclusions that people from around the world have tools or farming implements that could also be used as weapons. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more from you.

Holy moly.... That is some hard meat, I mean that is some thick hard meat. Very cool indeed. May I ask where you bought the axe? I live in Sweden and if I can't buy the axe, then at least I can buy the axe head, at least a similar one from Gränsforsbruk, and make an attempt at making a shaft myself. Awesome video! Love your channel!

I'd love to but they are not listed on the Arma Epona site at the moment. Great website though lots of tempting stuff ! However I'll have to resist as I'm saving up for my Norwegian "Raid" next year.

Dude your awesome! Oh man you look like you have fun doing what you do there! This was an awesome video. I own a Arms and Armor Dane Axe and its a beast. I love the Viking era. Just fantastic info on your channel. God bless.... Was the wood shaft that long you think? I am sure they had many different lengths back then.
@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen
@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen 6 жыл бұрын
I think you’re right. The handle length would have varied, I guess. But a Dane axe had a long reach. Glad you like the video!

Did you have the axe head custom forged or did you buy it? Can you recommend a vendor that sells the larger bearded head and not the hatchet-sized head? Thanks.
