I think it's something to do with keeping their actions per minute up. There's not a lot to do in dark age so they need something to click on, even if it does nothing. If they let their apm drop then it can be hard to get it back up in an instant to react to something, like a drush or lame

All rts pros do that kinda thing same with league or dota, it’s to stay engaged w high APM when there is very little going on, spamming 3-4 times looks pointless in dark age but in imperial when you have 3-5 tcs it’s already a habit so all your tcs stay busy.
