My favorite climb in the white mountains. The history how Mt. Chacorua (Cha- Cor- O- Ah) got it's name is quite a story too. My personal favorite trail is definitely the Champney Falls trail. Seconded by the Jim Liberty trail. Thanks for sharing your climb. Brings back many memories.

New Hampshire doesn't fool around with gradual grades, they just go straight up the hills. Happy birthday!

Champney falls up to the summit is a dream, multiple waterfalls and large fall pools, gorgeous. I recommend it on the way up if you do it agaib! Great video man.

I climbed Ckocorua by the same route and came close to sliding on loose gravel over a sharp drop once. I flattened my body out and clawed the granite to arrest. Chocoura is one of the 4 New England mountains that I have topped at least 6 times. Washington, Madison, and Katahdin are the others. It’s very hard to pick a favorite from those 4.

Have done those 4 listed but looking to compile a list for this summer, any other favorites?

@@TheVirtualsherpa Cardigan is very similar to Chocorua. The Holt trail is quite nice. In Maine I like Tumbledown Mt. Neither is especially challenging but both are very scenic. Happy trails!

Read a full guide on this hike here: www.thevirtualsherpa.com/mt-chocorua-new-hampshire-hike-guide/ *EDIT* Thank you to those who continue to correct my pronunciation of the mountain in the comments - well aware of how to say it now.

Hiked it by going Little Sister, Middle Sister, Big Sister, then Chocorua. Have been told by many locals, some of native descent, that the correct pronunciation is SHA-KOR-WA.

Simple...... CHA . kora. Easiest way for us locals to know who is native to NH.... alot of the indian names are a challenge to pronounce.
@pamelahomeyer7482 жыл бұрын
You are pronouncing the Indian name correctly at the beginning of the video but other people have anglicized it. Either way you are correct

I wondered about that. My family always called it Mt chock-KOUR-ah.

Thanks Doug and really appreciate the pronunciation- wish I had you before I filmed 😂
@jakeborrelli96773 жыл бұрын
This is not true, its one of the most commonly mispronounced words/names/mountains in NH. The correct way to pronounce it is Shoh-kor-oh-wah. Even though it looks like Shoh-kor-uh-ah and everyone pronounces it like sh-cor-ra. It has been mispronounced for years and it and the mispronunciation has stuck.
@bradrushing5959 Жыл бұрын
That would be sh- COR- oo- uh. Right.?I used to live neat there. It is a distinctive and lovely mountain. I'm reading the book, Look To The Mountain by LeGrande Cannon Jr. right now. I'm loving it! I'd like to climb it but I haven't climbed a mountain since I was in my thirties, about 25 years ago. I'd h Ave to work my way up to it. ~ Heather ~

The most photographed mountains in the Whites? That can’t be right. More than Washington? Or Lafayette?
I would consider this a moderate hike - you can read more about it, including my rating system explained here: www.thevirtualsherpa.com/mt-chocorua-new-hampshire-hike-guide/

Anyone who brings dogs on hikes like this should check their paws as they can wear down and bleed = pain and rescue.
