The reason I keep watching reactions to this song is for that moment with the E5 belt at the end. That's when people who understand vocal technique tend to have their biggest reaction, and presumably for the same reason I did the first time I watched it. When she pulled that out, that's the moment I said to myself, this isn't just about a novelty or a gimmick. She's the real thing.

Agreed. That’s the moment I watch these vocal coach reactions for. It’s a quick switch from the growl straight into a great belt with range, and the vocal technique folks tend to notice.

@@csgowoes6319 Yeah, no one is perfect. I have little to no personal experience with the metal scream/growl, but I wonder about the stamina it takes to keep that up for long periods. The gender differences in vocal tract are more about size than fundamental structure, so I would imagine it's similar for men and women.

Just like everyone else I was waiting for your reaction, knowing that you're a vocal specialist. My original plan for covid was to learn to improve my singing ability, sadly instead my mind decided that I needed to heal my childhood trauma instead & I have been sucidally depressed for 2+ years but it will get sorted & then I can work to improve my singing & I will have all this wonderful guidance from the youtube voice coaches I follow. I haven't watched to the end yet so you may yet comment but nobody seems to have commented about how JinJer & their families as a band are from the Donbass region of Ukraine which is currently being bombed flat by Russia. When Russia first invaded in 2014 they moved to Western Ukraine, which is AFAIK where they are still based. Given the Donbass is the heavy manufacturing area of the Ukraine, the interest in heavy metal seems obvious. Just as Detroit or Sheffield is big on heavy metal bands.

I love her voice. I can hear a morsel of an accent on certain words. I'm a connoisseur of accents lol and if you listen hard you can detect it slightly on a few words. Definitely recommend "Judgement and Punishment" (vocal one take) to the vocal coach reactors! It's a great side view of her while singing/screaming and also a clean recording to catch vocal phrasing and nuances! I love the concert stuff also. Often those are recommended either to prove that really is her voice (not a processed effect as some allege), or just because it is their personal favorite Jinjer song. Nothing wrong with that, and if Pieces and Judgement grab this vocal coach then I definitely think she should go down that rabbit hole of awesome live performances.

The duality of her voice fits right in with the Pisces theme. The sign Pisces is represented by 2 fish swimming in opposite directions - sort of a split personality situation. Using the fish metaphors, part of her wants to be caught ( having an intimate relationship), and the other part is "skittish" due to past mistreatment by "callous men" and "handsome butchers". The "emeralds being ripped away" are probably her wall of iridescent scales which has to be lowered in order to achieve intimacy. As they say, "Once bitten, twice shy". One reactor said that her voice reminded him of his ex-wife's voice - before and after marriage. After this introduction, the recommendation is usually for a live performance, so you can hear her growls in a that situation, but their song "Home Back" hits pretty hard. for other reasons. It was written after being forced to leave their homes because of the fighting in eastern Ukraine, and how they want their homes back.
@thecassman
@thecassman 2 жыл бұрын
Well said. Great to see others write up the Pisces symbolism! ... The really sad thing about 'Home Back' is that many believe it's the current conflict the song was written about, but it was actually the conflict when Tati was a child... It's awful that they are enduring it all again.

I've heard people refer to it as "Double Voice" before, but It's hard to find a formal definition of this phenomenon. It's EXTREMELY rare from what I can tell. But you are most definitely hearing two tones in her last two growling segments. I have been questioning my sanity for the last 10 or so listens, but every time I replay it I hear the same exact thing. When most people execute a Double Voice type of effect it takes them more than one track to accomplish it. She is absolutely, terrifyingly INCREDIBLE!

Tatiana has done a bunch of interviews. Even with some KZbinrs. If I recall the interviews correctly she has said she doesn't know any of the science behind it. She was inspired by another female screamer: Otep. Then just practice screaming at cars on a highway, and in her pillow at home for years to to learn how and develop her style. I think she did one interview on Loudwire on how she learned to scream. "Teacher, Teacher" is probably my favorite song but yeah I agree with other commenters for vocal coaches and teachers "JINJER - Judgement (& Punishment) - Tatiana Shmayluk - One Take Vocal Performance" is a good one because its just her up close in a booth.

Great reaction and analysis. Tatiana's harsh vocals are really interesting because they display aspects of both false cord screaming (low, open, dark coloured, growl) and fry screaming (usually high, bright, with high frequency static-y overtones) at the same time. To use an analogy, Tatiana's harsh vocals use false cord screaming like chest voice and fry screaming like head voice, and she can mix the two in various proportions. This is unusual because false cord screaming is done with the true folds held open, and its very hard to generate enough breath pressure to rattle the tissues that produce a fry scream sound higher in the vocal tract with the true folds open. Usually fry screaming is done with the true folds held closed enough to only allow a small high pressure stream of air through (the true cords are not used to phonate while doing this in a pure fry scream). It makes her harsh vocals pretty unique. She's a wonderful vocalist with a wide variety of clean and harsh timbres in her arsenal and the artistic sense to use all those tools in the right places to aid storytelling.

Watching you attempt to construct the physical vocal production in your mind's eye while carrying on a conversation was precious. The words would flow but then the brain would give a nudge like "just think about the arytenoids... and what is going on in the posterior pharynx?" A very good and entertaining reaction. About 4 months ago we got a heads up from Elizabeth/The Charismatic Voice that she had arranged for a detailed laryngoscope for Will Ramos of the band Lorna Shore at a very legit lab in Utah (I shall hold off on plugging them only because I'm former faculty at another west cost med/dental U who has a similar lab, lol It's kinda like football fans, we don't cheer for the opposition, lol.) Anyway, that video is premiering this Fri June 10 on her channel. Yes, I know it's kind of clumsy talking about the 'competition' on a reactor's channel, but 98% of the time you folks seem to be much more supportive of others in your field (then we are in grant-competitive academia, or even worse in the private sector). You'll probably see the info in her community section, and you REALLY should see the teaser/trailer she has up right now...Will is such a real/down-to-earth/FUNNNY person. OK, enough plugging other channels. ...But since I watched all the way to the end of the video and you'd mentioned wanting to see a scope of harsh vocal production, I wanted to make sure you knew that video was upcoming. No spoilers, form me. But there's a hint at a very cool 'ah hah moment' in the trailer.

Tatiana is a treasure and the rest of the band is so talented and so together in producing this. It really is a team effort. That last transition by Vladislav, introducing Tatiana's last beast-mode segment, was amazing. " Wallflower" by Jinjer also speaks to lead singer Tatiana's introverted side. The band has been around for 12 years now with different personnel, the most recent change being Vlad the drummer who is a classically trained pianist. The guys write the music and Tatiana (a self-confessed procrastinator who does her best work under the last minute deadline) writes the lyrics. Tati's early role model for screaming was a female screamer named "Otep" from the band Otep. Check them out with the song "Ghostflowers" and imagine Tati hearing a female vocalist screaming for the first time. The song "Wallflower" portrays the band's different personalities and Tati's artistic side.

I see recommendations for both Perennial live at Wacken and Judgement & Punishment one take. Both are amazing. Wacken is very technical and will show her on stage and her mesmerizing stage presence (I've seen them twice) and at the end she talks to the crowd and you can see how out of breath she was which is mind-blowing. p.s. your comments at the end make me wonder if The Charismatic Voice's "Operation: Throat Camera" with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore is on your radar. My immediate thought was wondering if she'd asked Tati. :)

One of my favorite belted parts she does is at the end of the Resurrection Fest video of "Captain Clock". Be aware though Vocalyst, that's one of their heaviest song for the first 3 minutes or so.

This is the best response to this song I have seen. Yes, the growl is super impressive, but the mixed belt is what really sends shivers down my spine. Her transitions are superb and everything she does is extremely musical. A lot of growl vocals are used for effect or to add aggressiveness, Tatiana uses every part of her repertoire as an instrument. I also like the way she transitions from a growl to a scream effortlessly - it's almost as if she is able to pitch the vocal effect.

Metal... It will always spotlight the very best in musicians. Just my opinion and I grew up in the disco's '70's. To me it allows for the most creative directions. Love your reactions as well. You will do well here, and grow maybe faster than you can imagine. 🤗🤘🏼🇺🇦

Such a great reaction and review, thank you. Jinjer are a really superb band, Tatiana is very adaptive in her singing and sings in many different genres, please check out, 'Perennial' live at Wacken 2019, 'Teacher Teacher' the official video, 'Judgement (and Punishment)' Tatiana's one-take vocal version, 'Vortex' the official video, which is one of the band's latest songs, for an earlier one react to 'I Speak Astronomy' the official video, they have a very large back catalogue. They're from the Ukraine, the band are: Tatiana on Vocals, Roman on Guitar, Eugene is the Bassist, Vlad is the Drummer. The men are still in the Ukraine, they were there when the war broke out, luckily Tatiana was in America with her husband at the time so is safe.

Something that I find amazing is her ability to maintain that clarity to her notes regardless of it's form. Both her sultry, seductive type singing in the beginning to the growls and screaming... How it's so well emphasized by that final fry at the end just wrapped it all together so well... Even after hearing the song numerous times at this point, I still can't really get over it lol.

Great reaction and breakdown, I love your insight. Jinjer is an incredible band and Tatiana is a vocal goddess, one of our absolute best in metal. You went from my most favourite band in the world, Disturbed, to my second most favourite band in the world, Jinjer. I saw Jinjer at a friends place and couldn't believe the voice of Tatiana, they came to Australia and I did a "meet and greet" and it was amazing. Such talent, an amazing band and absolutely insane live. Like Disturbed they are even better live than on any album.

If you go through Jinjer’s catalogue you will learn that Tatiana has a higher and lower register. But it works because the band create the music that allows it work so perfectly. She has very little do to with the composition but they know she can add to it. The band site lots of bands as influences but I would definitely say that Opeth (not forgetting Otep was Tatiana’s eye opening moment as it being possible for a woman to do extreme vocals). Opeth and Otep are too very different bands but good in their own rights. I hope Jinjer will be remembered for their talent and the fact they opened up so many people to metal in the way bands that Metallica, SOAD and Slipknot did (just name a few) because they got people interested in a genre that they would otherwise of thought differently to. I’m 51 and I honestly think Tatiana is my favourite vocalist out their now. People can argue and that’s fine, my tastes are tastes and what I like is just what I like, it’s an opinion. Music / art is not based in facts, so love what you love and enjoy it, be happy with what makes you happy (unless it’s auto tune in which case I’ll say you are wrong 😂😂😂😂) love, peace and harmony ♥️

Whatever Jinjer's level of commercial success turns out to be, I am confident that in a decade there will be a generation of musicians citing Jinjer as key influences. Looking at the more recent success of Spirtbox, I don't think they'll be alone and bands like Jinjer and SB are going to be the end of this, but rather just be the first steps in a new wave of metal becoming an influential genre again. And here's the thing, look at how successful Adele has been, and she's almost always singing about hurt and anger, but it's made pretty, sugar-coated, romanticized. I think when music historians look back on the last decade, they'll point to Pisces live session in 2017 when so many women around the world were really taking hold of their anger and the amazing technique on display waking people up to a new paradigm of music. Music that doesn't have to choose between beauty and the beast, between Adele and Arch Enemy. Rather it is music that can integrate the two ends of the spectrum and embrace everything in between. That is able to be beautiful when it should be, but to express hurt and anger fully when it needs to too.

She does a lot of covers, Bad Romance is a good one but then she does some nice soft vocals in her covers of “Lovely” And a cover of the Gaga/Bradley cooper song (cannot remember the name right now). I absolutely agree that Tati is in a league of her own, but you might like Lauren as well.

All the artistry aside, I love how she clearly defined the mood of the verses, the first is all introductional and neutral beautiful, the second is already a step up , warning and more involving, and by the time the third comes she knows she's got you sucked in and plays the Master role, prepping you for the finale. Awesome dynamics by an incredible woman backed up by top musicians. The usual easing in is to check "Perennial LIVE at Wacken 2019", a beautiful sample of their live performance, or "Teacher teacher", but since you're a voice teacher, I bet "Judgement and punishment one take vocal performance" is what you'll want to sink your teeth into 😉.

I love the face you made while hearing Tati's edgy rough vocals for the first time (she calls them 'extreme vocals'). I have done that myself. Oh, you have to give this another listen, you missed something. This was not the first recording or the first playthrough in the studio. She actually has a backing track that is her whispering the lyrics underneath the normal clean vocals. She's not actually as airy as it seems. I think she also did another backing track for the low screams and maybe also for the high scream at the end. Obviously there is some echo effect on the mic at certain points. And AMAZING, AWESOME display all the way around. This is a world-class band! :)

LOL. You only THINK you’re prepared for the first time hearing Tatiana. People literally make a hobby of watching first-time reactions to Jinjer, and this song is the best one to start with because it’s so Jekyll-Hyde. A lot of reactors have serious meltdowns. Julia Nilon just about killed me-in part probably because I’d only just heard it the first time myself, and had a very similar reaction. Anyway, great reaction and analysis. You might want to check out The Bass Gang’s recent cover of Centuries, featuring Jonathan Young-he briefly uses a similar technique, and I gather he does more on his own channel (metal guy, 2 million subscribers). It sounds to me like he’s also classically trained-I hear a little of that from him at times. The BG members themselves are basses with extensive ranges and considerable talent. One member is currently in apprenticeship with the Santa Fe Opera as well. FYI, this band is from Ukraine. Tatiana, last I heard, was in the US with her husband, but the men are in Ukraine fighting. I check in on their channel every so often hoping to find out how they are. They’re selling merch to help fund the fight. PS, I doubt I’m the first to mention this but you look a lot like Annette Bening back in the day.

Great reaction as usual. I hope you delve deeper into the metal genres. Its the most welcoming community of fans. The fans of metal have a thicker skin shall we say when it comes to analyses'. In fact it tickles them when you are shocked,surprised,appreciative or repulsed by a suggestion. They absolutely appreciate talent in all music styles and genres but are metal to the core. So in closing I recommend Ne Obliviscaris an d their song Forget Not for an incredible rollercoaster ride you may want to never end. Thank you kindly .

I was in Dallas one time with a friend in a metal band, and they taught me to growl, that "discovery moment" you mentioned. Here's the steps they walked me through. 1. First, say something ridiculously southern and with a big exaggerated Texas drawl. We did "You got a purdy mouth." (sorry, lol) Maybe this is relaxing everything since southern accents are slow and drawn out. 2. Next, say it again but as low as you can. 3. Then, say it again but even lower than that. Lower than you're able to. I'm guessing this is forcing you to not just relax, but open the vocal chords. Keep them out of it. If they're looser than they have to be to make sound, then voila. 4. Finally, say it again like that but as loud as you can. And tah-dah, I made a noise I wasn't expecting to ever hear myself make and it was awesome. Didn't hurt either. I'd be curious to take actual lessons though since this was just "something a guy told me" and not necessarily the right way. It worked though and was a blast.
