I remember being a 9 year old, grief stricken girl who was not heard, emotionally neglected, "you need to be strong for your mother" when it was her who was suppossed to take care fo me in that time but I was too scared to speak because I could hurt people, I was quiet, calm, but inside I was just too sad and angry. I remember the first time I listened to any metal and it was this song, at the time I did not speak english, I did not understand it, but the screaming, the rage, it made me burst out crying because I felt relief, I could not scream, but this song did it for me. Duality is very dear for me for this exact reason, 18 years later.

I can't believe people actually think this song is about migraines 😂. This song is not about migraines. That's a stupid story that has been rotating the internet for years. This song is about the duality within the soul. Darkness vs light. Fear vs love. Corey is a super empath. He and I, for that matter, feel the world very differently than most people. "I push my fingers into my eyes It's the only thing that slowly stops the ache But it's made of all the things I have to take Jesus, it never ends, it works it's way inside If the pain goes on, I'm not gonna make it" because a super-empath can't not feel. We can't not see all the pain, suffering, and ignorance of the world. "I've gotta say what I've gotta say And then, I swear, I'll go away But I can't promise you'll enjoy the noise" because super-empaths always speak the truth as they see it. Even if it's not pretty. "Tell me the reality is better than the dream But I found out the hard way Nothing is what it seems" because super-empaths see beyond the bullshit. We feel everything. "All I've got is insane" because that is how it feels for a super-empath to navigate the world for most of our life, until we wake up to who we are. Fun fact: You can clearly see the duality in Corey's soul in Slipknot and Stone Sour. Slipknot represents the darkness, and Stone Sour is the light. It's all about spirituality. His solo project, BTW, could only happen when he reunited with Alicia, which is another part of his spiritual journey. Listen to the lyrics of the songs. It's about a Twin Flame journey. Most of Corey's songs are about Twin Flames in both Slipknot and StoneSour. I can give a whole lecture about that topic alone. Plus, if you listen to Corey talk about his tattoos, you will learn that all of them are about duality. Mine, too, BTW. It's who we are. Super-empaths. Heyokas. Look it up 😉. Many blessings 🙏. Much love and light ❤✨.

From an article about the song: Lead singer Corey Taylor explained: "Did you ever get that headache that is just not going to go away, and you end up sticking your thumb and your middle fingers so far into your eyes just to stop the pain? It usually has to do with making a choice. you get to that point in everyday life that you have to make a decision that you may not want to, but your kind of pushed into making that decision." >>

@@stevegruber4724 Not to forget, the video also resembling the migraines. A pretty normal and quiet house, getting swarmed by all these people making loud noises, bright lights, just an overall overload... it's exactly how i would describe a migraine. You have a clear head and suddenly everything feels like it is happening at once and you cannot do anything except pushing your fingers into your eyes, just to maybe squeez out the pain somehow.

That fullness, you mention, that Corey Taylor maintains, even with most of his harsh vocals, is a cornerstone of my metal experience. Metalheads sometimes say metal relaxes them, and with Corey's voice I can actually put my finger on it (for myself at least). His vocals feel centered. He is giving us all this emotion, aggression and harshness, yet more often than not it sounds like he still has a little more, if he wanted to. It feels stable. That mix of the harshness, providing such a good vent for my own frustration, and the control I hear in it, does a lot for me emotionally. It's not unique to metal. I can think of one non-metal song in which the vocalist manages to give me the same feeling. It's a powerful place to project from, I imagine.

@@graciehart777 what I was thinking of at the time was the band "nico touches the walls", and the song "broken youth" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHTdXoGGmt-ZY80). At around 1 min 55 sec for example. It's like you can hear the vocalist's body tension in their voice. It's not just sustain though. There is some emotional component as well, but I struggle to describe the nuances of it. Anyway. I was thinking of that song in particular, because it was the first I noticed it on. There is other examples though. Incubus - Pardon me, has some parts like that. Paramore - Hallelujah, especially the last section of it. It might actually be a lot more common in clean vocals. I guess it's harder to keep that controlled feel with harsh vocals.

Fun Fact about this video: this is actually a fans house. They willingly let hundreds of people destroy their house for a "Slipknot" video. Also, this song is about Corey Taylor having migraines, which the house serves as a metaphor for his head with all the people running in and breaking it being the pain from headaches. That's why in the parts where he's kinda talk-singing, he's sounding like he's got his hand on his own head to alleviate pressure and the line "I push my fingers into my eyes" also has the same relief-effect.

I figured with something that may not have been known to the creator might be a better post for her. However, I would think the songs such as "Bring Em Back Alive" or "Light My Way" would be great suggestions too. I also just want to throw it out there but Queens of the Stone Age should be mentioned as a another path down the rabbit hole that should be experienced by all music appreciating owners of ears and lovers of talent.

Brilliantly worded. It’s truly mind blowing how well the deepest of existential themes can be expressed through both vocals and instruments. You can truly feel the pain they’re going through when writing this song. And as you mentioned, it’s truly authentic. It’s not just a song about anguish, anxiety, depression, mental breaking points, etc… it’s a connection to those existential, primal feelings. Sorry if you have but you should do an Opeth song. Either Harvest by Opeth or Ghost of Perdition Live at Red Rocks. I can tell by your body language and terminology that you’re connecting to it. Also, the way he kind of mumbles out the words in the very beginning of the song put you in this catatonic like lullaby state. Just in a more darker existential way.

It took a while to get to the scream/growl point but that to me is Corey’s coolest and most unique sound. A lot of screamers in metal don’t differentiate themselves as much as he did. His voice is more textured and forceful without losing control. Maybe thicker is another word to describe that sound but I’ve always thought these screams from him in Slipknot’s first few albums are unreal and I haven’t heard another vocalist that has anything similar to it.

I want to take this moment to thank you. When I watch your reactions, I see your sincerity for the beauty of music and lyrics. Many people get caught up in the appearance of Band X, and it distracts them from their real motives. The feeling that lyrics and sound cause us to emote. It is here where we identify, and the artist becomes relatable. In some ways, we feel like we 'know' the artist, even though we've never met. This is the beauty of the song.

Beautiful way that you put your words”it makes me sad because I can hear the anguish” I love hearing how you break down songs. You are able to encapsulate what I feel as I also heard the song for the first time. Sexy, smart and a wonderful insight to the feelings in a song. Xoxoxo respectfully

It's pretty wicked watching you listen to these songs for the first time!! It's kind of awesome, when you're listening, you look like 'Good Girl Gone Bad' but then you pause and it's like "OH! There she is!!" :P I mean that in a very complimentary way!! Music (Good Music) was designed to draw you in!.. Seeing it do its job is wonderful! Keep up the amazing work, you're deadly 🎶

You have the most honest reactions, it's refreshing. If I'm not mistaken you are originally from Iowa, these guys are arguably have been the top metal band for years. That is something to be proud of as an Iowan. Great job on your videos, loved the Triumph reactions also.

One of my favorite videos from them. I still remember watching this in high school and wanting to experience something like this. Over the years I’ve gotten to and there’s nothing like being surrounded by people who love this music like you do. Great reaction! If you haven’t checked out Slaughter to Prevail - Demolisher yet, you should. Would love to see you react to that at some point.

I always heard the vocals in this song as that distant sound being the internal dialogue in his mind. The forward sound you describe being the verbal audible to the rest of the world. The “I push my fingers into” being that middle ground. Between the internal dialogue to the external “my eyes”

Dude I love the channel, only new to it but love the reactions. Can I just suggest one thing? Not sure what quality those ear buds are but you should really invest into some high quality open headphones, they will change your whole sound signature on every song you listen to. I have Sennheiser drop 6XX and they freak me out with what you can hear. I'm sure you buy better but all have a high price tag. Love watching vocal coaches listen to metal and you do a sick job. That was a really great reaction with great commentary, its great to see your love for metal grow from what I've seen. Pretty chick with growing love for metal, you have my support. Awesome video.

It was great seeing your reaction to this. I've watched quite a number of your videos, and this is the first I'd seen, where you watched the entire video all the way through w/out stopping. I know, Slipknot is a lot to take all at once. lol I've listened to them for 30 years now, since the earliest iteration of the band, before Corey Taylor had even joined, and while I was a much bigger fan of their older recordings, it's always interesting to see someone's reaction to their first listen to them.

"Duality" has such a personal resonance for me now. I had always loved the song but something made me love it more.... As an adult I got diagnosed with some serious lifelong health problems and had to get an MRI ...I was not looking forward to it. I had seen a lot of doctor dramas, they always made MRI's look like this super anxiety inducing thing where you'll be trapped in a small space, have to hold completely still, and lots of loud annoying noise around you. I was SOO nervous about it. But when I got there, the staff made me comfortable and gave me a choice of music to listen too and I told him the kinds of music I liked and gave me MRI save headphones and put on Spotify. So when I rolled back into this giant metal tube to get this thing done that I was dreading, I heard Corey Taylor whisper into my ears "I push my fingers into my eyes." and it was so relaxing and I just coasted through the whole thing after that.

You know what that's what I love about metal music because there's so much going on you can listen to it over and over again and then pick out little details that she missed the first few times either in the vocals or in the instrumentals or some things that they're doing with the mix there's a lot of replayability

I love the fact that you get into the reaction 22 seconds into the video. No bullshit. It's so refreshing. I think the production is responsible for a lot of the sense of vocal 'duality'. The 'whisper voice' is heavily EQed, sounds like it's had all the very lows and highs cut and put through a compressor so you get a very hollow, crunchy sounding quality like talking on the phone. The effect of various filters on the audio signal is fascinating. Look at what a 'saturator' is :)
