That was a great performance, and I hope Jan Dan goes far. I grew up listening to Journey, and it is a tall order for contemporary artists to take them on. @@ThyWorldofWill as much as i want to think that way, that's not always the case for vocalists and what approach they actually choose. you can paint a beautiful picture in ways that fit your vision but sometimes that's a stretch, or even an excuse to deny someone's vocal limitations by trying to reframe, which would be fine if they have the vocal range, and have just chosen not to use it to highlight the emotional aspects of a song. but when someone doesn't have the range, and tries to do these big songs, that's a different story. that's when these beautiful pictures that you're painting are no longer genuine reflections of what's happening in reality. also, vocalists determine the key to a song to fit their comfort vocal range rather than artistic approach. that's just a known fact, especially in a singing competition, unless they rearrange the song like Will Champlin (Season 5) and Taylor John Williams (Season 7) did with their vision as musicians rather than just vocalists. plus, what is this "fresh and deeper meaning to the song" for you about singing this song in C major instead of D major? it's really just to fit his comfort vocal range and that's it. you can't use these mellifluous words like how they're used in a ChatGPT-generated essay to try to justify his vocal limitations.
@ThyWorldofWill7 күн бұрын
@@jay70599 I see where you're coming from in terms of technicalities. I'm not a music major, so my comments are based purely on how I interpreted his take on the song. At the end of the day, it boils down to personal taste-whether you like it or not. Sure, he may have stretched his vocals and struggled to hit the key, but for me, what really matters is how the performance makes me feel and the emotions it evokes. Like any form of art-be it essays, music, or painting-we can critique it both objectively and subjectively. I’m not defending him for lowering the key, nor am I trying to justify my feelings when I said there was a “fresh and deeper meaning.” It’s simply a matter of personal taste as a listener. When you say, “ have just chosen not to use it to highlight the emotional aspects of a song, but when someone doesn't have the range and tries to do these big songs, that's a different story,” I see where you’re coming from. But I don’t think there’s only one way to highlight the emotional aspect of a song. It’s not just about singing in the original key or trying to match the range of the original artist. Sure, some songs-like Mariah Carey’s-are notoriously tough to pull off. But most singers aren’t trying to outshine or surpass the original; they’re bringing their own voice and emotion to the song. It’s not about mimicking; it’s about making it your own, whether it’s as high or low as the original. Singing should be technical, yes, but it’s also about connection and expression. Since this is a competition, I imagine he’ll be judged on both-the technical execution and how well he brings the song to life.
@jay705997 күн бұрын
@@ThyWorldofWill here's what i think: Jan had an amazing round when he did "Dust in the Wind", which he lowered by half a step but very much stayed within flexible melodic arrangement, which allowed him to exude emotions in ways that didn't interfere with how he was able to simultaneously showcase vocal skills. his emotions and tone have always been his strengths, so the best option for him is to change a song's key to where he's vocally comfortable, and then arrange the melody to ONLY allow people to connect, and to not allow people to think that he's changing the arrangement due to vocal limitations. as a result, for "Open Arms", he could've easily lowered the key even more, maybe by another whole step, B-flat major, so he can sing it comfortably and arrange the second chorus melodically to ONLY allow listeners to interpret it in a positive manner. i am confident that it would've worked for him a lot more than this, sticking to a higher key, C major, and then struggling during the second chorus. it overshadowed the way he was able to make certain listeners feel, and prevented a lot of listeners, myself included, from simply feeling his performance because his vocal limitations just became too obvious. so basically, he unfortunately revealed his weaknesses by doing all of this, and as a result contributed to his elimination. i'm glad that you are still able to feel the emotions that his performance had evoked. my paragraph above was just to rationalize why it didn't do it for me, and most likely why it didn't do it for many others. and i agree that it's about making songs your own. i would just argue that Jan Dan in this performance didn't manage to successfully make it his own during the second chorus because his vocal range prevented him from making it the way he wanted to (he probably wanted to stick to the original melody or even more), which, once again, could've been prevented by him choosing a key that he was more comfortable with. i'm sure that if he had chosen an even lower key, like i said, B-flat major, he would've been just fine. Jermaine Paul, the winner of Season 2, did the song in B major, half a step lower than this version, and still got through to the final round. the original was done by Steve Perry, who had a ferocious vocal range, so i'm sure listeners wouldn't judge him if he was to choose a key that he was more vocally comfortable with so he had more room to only demonstrate his strengths - his emotions and tone, since not a lot of male vocalists can do Journey songs in the original key, and "Open Arms" is actually one of their easier songs to sing. with all that said, though, i do have to say i struggle a bit to understand how he was vocally struggling with the second chorus, because i think he did well on "Roxanne" with Adam Bohanan, and that song is DIFFICULT, and he was hitting Bb4 or even C5 from time to time (sure Adam took most of the high notes, though). if he was doing that, he should've had no problem singing "Open Arms" hmm part of me don't get it.

This was honestly my least favorite from Jan Dan. I can't figure out what kind of artist he wants to be. His song choices have been weird. He seems to be more suited with R&B songs than other genres. He should pick a lane he is most comfortable with and stick with it rather than confusing voters. If he goes home, it's because voters aren't connecting and are too confused. He has a great voice, but the song didn't go anywhere. There is a pattern with Jan Dan. His blind was decent, his battle was great, his knockout was decent, his playoff was great, and now his semis was decent. Hope he has a great song in the IS.
