Hello Mr. Ned, I am a waiter with 8 years of experience. I have a problem from the first week of work I entered the work without any training or experience. A supervisor asked me to serve juices for a meeting of people of managers. I had to present in the beverage tray and put the first cup, then the second, then I lost balance and all the remaining cups fell off and spilled juice on my clothes. It was a very embarrassing situation, and from that day until now, I am afraid of this method.
@TheWaitersAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Khalid, I would say if you have made it 8 years in the business carrying trays the way you feel comfortable, you are doing great! You have no problem! Still, if you feel like something is missing and you want to improve, get on it and start trying! First take a tray home and practice. then make yourself a promise that every day at least once you will carry the tray the proper way and serve the drinks with one hand! Once a day for the first week! If after this first week, you have no accedents you go for two times a day the second week and so on! You will probably still make a mistake and drop a tray! I still do it once in a while! No big deal! We are only humans and we make mistakes! The trick is to keep your mind and your senses on the hand that carries the tray, while you are putting the glass on the table with your right hand! Your eyes are enough control over the right hand! Keep you mind on the left hand and this way you will succeed to keep your balance! Good luck, my man!

I am a trainee as hotel specialist and currently in restaurant department, there is basically no training, you just watch and they say can you please bring 10 wines to that one table? And I am like how? I have never done it in my life, deep inside I know I can't do it. Being confident doesn't work when you "DON'T KNOW HOW" to do it. Like in this video it has to he explained and then carry 3 to 4 glasses at the beginning then add more and more as you find the balance and get confident. I have bought a tray and 10 wine glasses and couple of big beer glasses and I am practicing by myself at home watching such videos. Thanks for the video 👍

It is not really possible! By the time you carry the first drinks, the other will go flat! Imagine you have six draft beers and you want to carry first three and then the other three....what will happen with the foam and all. But if you don't feel safe or the tray will be too heavy, you should do exactly that! Until you learn how to carry loaded tray! Good luck!

"The funny way" is actually what it'd recommend for the end of a big events - with hundreds of people (when at least half the people left - and there's still hundreds of glasses to be cleared after them). You can move faster & carry more - while still stable about it. The cleaning laddies - won't give a f'ck about the way you carry the glasses. Serving tho, sure - you can be as fancy about it as u like.

Which hand is legall for the Cary the tray right or left ?
@TheWaitersAcademy7 ай бұрын
The drink tray we carry with left hand and we serve with the right from the right side of the guest! The food tray you should carry with your stronger hand, then place the food tray on the tray jack and serve your guest: - Europe : with the right hand from the right side of the guest - USA : with the left hand from the left side of the guests Then we also have large food platters that we carry with our left hand and we serve using fork and spoon into the plate of the guests with our right hand from the LEFT SIDE of the guest! Pretty much that covers all the angles of tray carrying!

Hello! Is it wrong if i keep the tray in my right hand and serve with my left?
@TheWaitersAcademy Жыл бұрын
It is against the code, but if you are left handed, this is natural for you. The problem is that you need to serve the drinks to the right side of the guest and doing it with left hand will make the procedure more trecherous and maybe the guest will feel uncomfortable. Plus, if you work in a fine dining restaurant, the manage will most probably insist you follow the service procedure to the point and you will need to switch hands! Better start learning to carry with left hand and with time you will get used to it.

Thank you so much for ur video. I live in London, UK should I still carry the tray in my left hand or should I carry the tray in my right hand?
@TheWaitersAcademy5 жыл бұрын
You are welcome Oliver! We carry the drink tray in right hand with no exceptions! The food tray with plates you should carry with your strong hand but ultimately with the hand you feel more comfortable! I carry it with right hand! Some use left! In the books for example is written differently! In Austria they teach you left hand! In USA is with right hand! If you carry food platter, you have to use your left hand so you can serve the items with your right hand from the left side of the guests! I hope that was helpful! Best of luck!

@TheWaitersAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Hi G, having really small hands makes everything harder in our job but it doesn't mean you won't be able to work as efficiently as anyone else. It will just be harder for you to carry three plates in one hand or bus tables at once. Carrying tray is all about balance. That won't be such a big problem although having large hands helps keep the balance. The bottom line is that I am workinh with a lot of trainees from Asia for example and they are really tiny as well but they all learn how to perform all the service procedures well. If they can, you can too. Start practicing and do some exercise for strengthening you hand grip.

You have to overcome that Stockeley! This is normal stuff! If you have been really good that means you are still very good. It is mental thing not to embarass yourself but this is not embarassment. We all make mistakes. I dropped a hot plate on a Sheikh's head.

I have been working as a waitress for about two years and I can't still get the tray that way so I have to leave it on the table and serve. I practiced and all that stuff but I still don't have the right balance I can do it just if I have a small amount of drinks in it. And yeah I want to learn but it's seems just to difficult and sometimes it's an embarrassing thing. I don't know if it's the tray or not but every time I carry it in the way that you do it seems like my drinks are slipping off.... Any tips??

Maybe something, but it could be nothing. You just need to give it a break and then start again! don't carry to heavy! You have probably pushed it too hard!

Unloading around a table is different to unloading to one spot I find. Because I might have several different drinks, and because I'm trying to keep balance on my tray, I have to make choice to either give drinks to patrons who are sitting next to each other, or go back and forth around the table.... I've had bad experience spilling ice water all over an old lady so always try to work so that I don't spill anything...
@TheWaitersAcademy3 жыл бұрын
The etiquette requires to go around and serve the guests ladies first and then gentlemen but if your restaurant doesn't really requires that you follow the etiquette, you can go the shortest way of course!

This is my nightmare as a waiter. I usually choose the safest way which is clearly not a professional way to carry a tray and hand drinks to the guests. One time I tried the correct way and Gosh, I forgot and topple the tray.

Take your mom cooking tray or anything with flat bottom and this kind of size. You can also take a tray from the restaurant and train with it at home
