I went to a rock concert there back in 1973 or 74. The stage was set up to the left of the stone arch stairs. Things have grown up a bit since then.

You need to see The Mountains and Lakes Region of western Maine. The forests are huge.

Fascinating! Madame Antoinette Sherri designed costumes for the Ziegfeld Follies and many Broadway shows. Party guests at her NH castle include Mae West, Ethel Merman, Al Jolson, Bert Lahr, Ray Bolger, the Ritz Brothers. Born in Paris, she immigrated to America and soon found success as a stage designer. Near the castle was a 200-foot by 300-foot swimming pool. In the center of the pool was a pedestal with a large statue of Aphrodite. She died in 1963 at the age of 84. From Greenfield Recorder, MA, February 23, 1979. Thank you so much for sharing this adventure, Cliff!

My husband and I were there a few years ago. I would have loved to seen it in its prime. We go to New Hampshire often as our son and his family live there.

A beautiful area for sure. I was very surprised when you walked into the basement, and it was poured concrete. I definitely did not expect that.

I'm a local here, Madame Sherri's is a great location to wander and explore. I think my favorite Madame story is that one day she rode a horse through downtown Brattleboro naked. She is rumored to have run a brothel here which is where the moniker "Madame" comes from. Anyway, thanks for visiting our little neck of the woods You should have continued up to Indian Pond... that is a lovely spot any time of year

Thank you, Woodsman, for this adventure. You saved me a lot of money in not having to travel there. Been all through New England. Many places we missed. This is apparently one of them. It’s almost like being there. Safe travels.👍

When we visited our Daughter and Husband in Boston we went to New Hampshire. The forest's are so beautiful, we went to Gloucester. We hit every place we could for Clam Chowder. Stopped in Kinnabuck and had stuffed Lobster, OMG 😳 the best. We were so spoiled when we got back home in Albuquerque NM 😎

It looks like the keystone has dropped out of the remaining arch. I think the house had a crawlspace, not a basement.

Is your landmark hike going to be mount washington? You should do the jewel trail. There is the least amount of exposure on that. I would advise you against driving up the auto road. Neither you nor Naomi will like that very much. Could take a stage at the outer road, but the exposure might get a little scary. The cog railway is the least scary. It is also very slow.
@linh89972 жыл бұрын
If you do hike up, make sure to bring plenty of food and water, and plenty of warm clothing. People freeze to death all the time up there, 12 months out of the year. Do not leave any later than 8:00 a.m. no matter which trail you take. I have got up there and then run out of time, and I have been able to take either the cog or the stage back down but you can't really depend on that
