It’s the early morning of August 29th, 2022. In the occupied city of Kherson, which is currently under the control of Russian troops, a barrage of GMLRS guided missiles strikes the command post of the Russian military. The ammunition and vehicle depots in Beryslav, located on the territory of the machine-building plant, are under a similar strike, as well as military objects in Havrylivka and Lvove, which were most likely the places of troops’ concentrations. Ukrainian missiles also pound the Kakhovka Dam bridge. Such strikes that aimed to isolate Russians on the right bank of the Dnipro River were quite common during July and August and significantly degraded the main Russian supply lines through Antonivka car and train bridges. However, the strikes on August 29th are abnormally numerous, because, on this day, Ukraine begins its major counteroffensive to retake the city of Kherson and sweep the only Russian lodgement area on the right bank of the Dnipro River.

The footage released of the Ukrainian troops liberating Kherson and all the civilians celebrating in the streets was so moving. Hopefully with the supply of more long range weapons the current counter offensive gain gain more momentum. The reappearance of TB2 during the Kherson offensive was hugely impactful in the pace of advance due to the mobility of precision strikes

Your fucken idiot or a bot. The aid given to Ukraine isn't money dumbass it's the value of equipment given and the only way for NATO to give equipment quickly is to give equipment that is soon to be replaced and has been payed for decades ago. So when you say who will give 100 billion in aid....firstly not even close to 100 billion has been given in aid and secondly the aid given isn't money it's equipment that costs nothing because it's already payed for and thirdly NATO has given literally a fraction of potential aid they could give and we are entering a stage of the war where Ukraine has production lines being built with baykar for the bayraktar in Ukraine as well as contracts with rhienmetall for the production of tanks and vehicles in Ukraine. USA has close to 8,000 Abrams in storage that it could potentially send and all it would cost them is the logistics and that is pennies for USA. Dumbass. Think before you comment. Or just shutup.

Yes, good catch! Actually, many of the Russian units involved in Kherson's defense were the troops that survived the Battle for Kyiv. I assume this is because Russia generally tries to rely on paratroopers for the hardest missions. So, when the key objective was to take Kyiv, they concentrated all these elite airborne regiments and brigades in the north. However, after the retreat from the capital, priority shifted to the defense of Kherson, so the very same paratrooper units popped up there.

The major failing for the Ukrainians in this operation was not successfully pursuing and overrunning the bulk of Russian forces on the right bank, most made it across to the left bank (abandoning a lot of equipment).

Kherson was a pyrrhic victory and warning for the Summer counter-offensive. The inability of Ukraine to exploit bridgeheads across a river, stubborn Russian defences and back and forth fighting despite Russian supply lines being threatened showed a Ukrainian advance in Zpaorizhiya was impossible. Russia built a strong defensive line, had good supply lines, adapted to HIMARS in general and had more competent leadership and mobilisation by that time. Perhaps Ukraine's resources would have been better spent on reaching Svatove. Couldn't HIMARS and other rockets destroy the bridges across the Dniepr and eventually force the Russians out without 10k+ dead?

There was more than the military offensive happening. In the last three days, the Russian forces were almost allowed to cross the Dnipro, without harassment by Ukrainian artillery. I think some Russian generals from this region were making some quiet deals to save the majority of their forces. Some decisions we will never know until long after the war will be over.

Great video. Many claim the war is turning into an attrition stalemate and that it will take years to resolve as Ukraine is only taking one field at a time, sometimes only advancing a few hundred meters at most. But then you look at what happened in Kherson and realize its all about making the situation untenable for the other side. Ukraine doesn't need to capture every single field the hard way, they just need to exploit the situation enough so that the Russians are simply forced to retreat or face an even worse disaster.

Watching the combat footage, Ukraine is smashing Russian troops in mass, it's just a lot of open field and trench warfare. If they want to keep their troops alive, Ukraine is gonna have to play it slower than in the past. The fact Russian forces and being shot if retreating shows the Russians would route if not for that

why is the left bank called the right bank and the right bank called the left bank?
@TheWarArchive
@TheWarArchive 10 ай бұрын
Every river has a left and right bank based on the direction of the current. Dnipro River has a current going from north to south. If you walk along the river in the direction of the current, you will see that the city of Kherson, for example, will be to your right. Therefore, it is on the right bank. Nova Kakhovka will be to the left or on the left bank of Dnipro.

@@TheWarArchive Greetings from CRO. I hope you don't use that armor crap in battles, because it's very outdated and had a lot of flaws during the Croatian Homeland War in the 90s. These were sent to you by the Slovenians, and the only good thing is that their vehicles are not worn out in the war, unlike the Croatian ones, which are in a state of disintegration. So I hope you only use BVP's for training and shooting practice.

It pains me a lot that to this day Kherson is a war zone, being heavily shelled by Russians. My hometown has a lot of refugees from there and to this day they're bound to stay away from their homes because it is too dangerous to return. I remember about that each time I see Kherson car plates (BT) on the streets, which is almost daily. Also, I believe it's important to note that the city of Mykolaiv used to have significant water supply issues before the liberation, since the canal supplying the water to the 500 000 residents of the city was for obvious reasons unavailable.

Well, I think the big part of it is the fact that I have been following these events closely for years. I also know Ukrainian and Russian languages, so I have access to content/sources that were never translated into English. For someone of a different background, I would recommend simply start with Wikipedia, and follow the links there for specific articles. Specifically for the current war, there are plenty of good mapping projects like DeepState as well as ISW reports that can be used for research.

This was such a fascinating CO. I remember watching them go over all those wide open fields and thinking “what a nightmare of an area to recapture. How is this going to work?” Pairing it with the Kharkiv CO was amazing because they drained so many forces and ISR attention from Kharkiv which enabled its capture and then made then temporarily think Kherson was a feint as well as putting C&C into utter chaos.

Will you be making a video to explain the the failed counter offensive? Explain what went so wrong after we were told Ukraine would be partying in Crimea this summer that past…and that they would reach Sea of Azov in a few weeks? It’s not looking very good

Amazing work, I think the ending is the most important part, the torture chambers look horrifying.

Can you imagine if terrorists develop manpads? That would be insanely scary.

The Documentary is amazing as always. Ukraine could have inflicted more losses on the withdrawing Russians. It seems the withdrawal caught Ukrainian commanders by surprise. They did not engage in hot pursuit and ultimately allowed the Russians to leave in order to reclaim their territory without risking further loses to themselves.
