Felt bad for the old man. It's pretty sad how we allow our egos, which only care about validation, to brutally assault and torture our souls, which have been through so much pain already. Not even recognizing how fragile and beautiful we are because of how ugly our ego perceive us, compared to the crowd, which it perceives as beautiful, even though they couldn't care less if our souls broke right in front of them. I'm not sure if it's just me, but the way these were filmed and the expressions the old man had, we're meant to create a feeling of empathy, which is genius because, well, it's you.

I'm amazed at how well this was presented. In case you did not understand it, here is my interpretation: at first we see an old man reaching the end of his life portrayed by driving a car. He is barely able to hear and nature has already begun to reclaim his body (he is covered with bugs). Also, he is confused and drives aimlessly. The viewer can tell that he is going in the wrong direction. He finally crashes into a stop sign which metaphorically means death ("end of the road"). Then he has to face where his decisions have led him. We see a barren land filled with selfish and sinful people who only seek physical pleasure. This is a representation of hell. The main character notices his younger self in the crowd, meaning that he was already young when things went wrong although he had the choice to change. At one point a woman wounds him but he doesn't run away (maybe he is addicted), although we see his regret (tears on his face). The younger self and the older self start moving towards each other, but the younger self does not recognize that the person facing him to actually being himself. Instead, he sees a monster that represents fear and anxiety from the unknown (the future). The younger self kills him but he doesn't realize that he also destroys his own future. Instead of facing his problems, he acts sinfully and the people around them encourage him to do so. Finally, the two timelines (present and future) come together ending with a murder that seals his fate. He is no longer innocent (symbolized by the withered lily) and he is now a dead person (both literally and figuratively).

Amazing song and beautiful video. In case some of y’all are missing the meaning, essentially the video and album are about an old man nearing the end of his life reflecting back on his past feeling shocked and regretful at the things he did in his past. In this case leading a sinful life partying, drinking, doing drugs, and having casual sex symbolized by demon like imagery on the party goers. When his younger self looks at his future self and begins killing him, it is a metaphor of him choosing ignoring the long term consequences of his actions now will take on his soul in the future and how the pain the old man lives with was self inflicted.

Meaning from the video: Abel was aged, trying to OD, having drugs and knocked out in the middle of the road. He was suffering a lot from the side effects like hearing lost, vision blurred and even illustrating/dreaming/thinking too much of his past. He was backflashing about the "fun" he had in his youth. He kept on repeating: "It's 5 a.m." means that he has no much time left, he proceed to his daily routine: drugs, sex, drive. So the 1st verse talk about he is having drug and his partner having sex with him. This is more like his partner also need some "stress reliever". While Abel can't help and accept the "fate" they had each other. He tried to sleep because of the side effects of drugs wears off. His partner does not want him to OD and he accepts it. After the incident, he realize he was doing all wrong and unable to forgive himself. He/she demand a break up, they accepts. Well, 2nd verse was most likely talking about his past mistakes, downfall of his career, heart breaking and loneliness. He found that everything he did is meaningless in the long run. He begged for his lover not to leave him and we all know that he did the same after the chances he get. (imagining hating yourselves until you k!l1 Y0ur53lv3)

man, this guy is showing us a movie. If you understand the era of after-hours and what he was experiencing then to now, it is a full-on sequence. a battle between depression and euphoria, dark vs light. i believe that dawn FM is the character coming through light after an enormous amount of time spent in the darkness. making peace with whatever is bringing him down and surviving it cause this life is still worth living.

As it's been said, we gotta take this album as the purgatory. Dawn FM is the radio station that guides us to the light. Gasoline's music video is like he's fighting against that part of him that is yet to accept that they are dead, it's that character who lived for parties and drugs, and he's losing the fight right here. We'll have to wait for the next chapter. These are my thoughts.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Abel and his team for every music videos they make. The story line from Take my breath, Sacrifice and Gasoline shows that he’s having a party in the most remote place that makes everyone uncomfortable. Later his breath is taken away and he's taken into a sacrifice event where he would be sacrificed for the toxic love in which he was and states that he will never be sacrificed for the same love again and fights the evil people dressed in black robes and escapes from the event. He then comes across his future self and is dumbfounded. The old man here might be from the future who has come to meet the present Abel in the party hall to warn him to stay away from the toxic love and drugs and start a life once dawn hits. But instead, the present Abel beats up the old man and probably Abel’s story might continue from the next mv. The expression of the old man creates a lot of sympathy. (This is the storyline I got in my head)

I didn't quite follow the storyline, but I think in sacrifice he is not talking about a toxic love so much but about his inability to compromise and actually love someone and give up his toxic life for a love. He says he has tried to put up a fight with that life, but he can't, so he will sacrifice the love for that life. And his soul is taken by the woman in red who in the end turns out to be also a kind of monster. And I guess that's why also he ends up dancing alone in the dark because when that life ends, he has nothing.

It’s crucial to know what Abel is trying to suggest by this album. By making songs about tregrets of the past life only pursuing catharsis and the enjoyable and pleasing feeling of the moment ,he is trying to escape from the dark and go to the light(since he doesn’t want to do that stuff anymore and spent dark times stemmed from it.).He even mentions that heaven is not that far away at phantom regret.and to enjoy dancing with the music, which is to let go of anxiety and regrets. That may be the reason for Abel’s old man appearance, making us realize that we are not eternal beings.

I like how the weekend went from blunt lyrics over time to deeper ones. They were always raw and poetic. But now his videos and songs feel more.. complex to understand like you wouldnt get it just looking on the surface now. He ages like bourbon where sure, its smoother going down, but it's a helluva lot stronger content you're ingesting.
@TommFoolery3 жыл бұрын
I guess I agree. I don't see his new music as better at telling a story, just different. On Trilogy and Kissland, The Weeknd used the music to tell a story through how the song made you feel. A good example would be Initiation. That song is terrifying and gives a good idea of what its like to be in The Weeknd's life. Since After Hours he's started to move more towards lyrical story telling (not to say he completely dropped what he was doing on his og albums of course). I love both styles and I'm happy to see him changing up how he does what he does. Keeps every album fresh.

Go watch the sacrifice video, it literally shows the devil pulling his soul out of his body. God can only save those that want to be saved. The Weeknd is in too deep with the occult elite at this point. If he tries to get out now they’ll have dirt on him that will end his career and maybe even his life. Same thing is happening with Kanye and it’s the same thing that happened to Bob Dylan. Search “Bob Dylan sold his soul” on KZbin and you’ll see. He’s going on tour this year because he can’t get out. Abel you probably will not see this but if you do just know I’ve been a fan since your sound cloud days and your growth through your music is perfect. Years later and you sing the words I can’t say out loud. Oddly enough what I’m going through you write about. Since since 2011 I have listened to your music everyday.

No, this song just ain’t it. It’s some weird new style that sounds like some 20 year old who got famous due to some tik tok bullshit.

This makes me feel reflective on my life. The good and the bad. And makes me wonder at the end of my life what I will think of my experiences. So much is based on what others perceive of our experience how they feel being around us, what they think of us, what we can bring to their lives and little on what we brought to our own soul. At least to me. We try to get in our own feels but it's hard. We a re bred to please and conform. Thinking someone will care enough because we cared so deeply for them and they might save us if we get to the deep end. But in the end it's our path that takes us there. Our internal compass.

Sometimes his songs feel like my depression and anxiety encapsulated in songs. I tend to push people away, dwell on my past regrets, and think about life/death too much. His music actually makes me feel better though like Im not alone. It’s crazy. We are born in a random time, random situation, have to become part of a random society, the people we love die, and then we die.
