In the mid 90s I had an in depth conversation with an old Navy saturation dive supervisor and his story was that they would use goats in the hyperbarric chamber to establish the original dive tables. He said the goats eye balls would shoot out of their skulls for effect. The Navy also offered weekend passes to Seamen that would take a ride in the chamber. He wasn't particularly proud of this but it happened.

Lot of info out there. So, I'm a 53 year old retired military diver. Just want to put out some food for thought for the young guys that DON'T do there due diligence. $100 plus straight out of civilian dive school as an "underwater welder!" Unheard of. The 80's are long gone. You're a tender for a long time. Rightfully so! We all work from the deck down then back up. Make sense!? All I want to put out there is schools are like recruiters. They want to fill billets, or make money! Keep an open mind and trust your "gut" when speaking to a school "recruiter!". You're a dollar sign in the civilian world. EARNED in the military!

Great description of the trade. The helmet is transportation to the work site. Perfect. I dove commercial in Alaska from 1975 to 1990 then all over until 1995. Then a project manager. I have been very disappointed in new divers in the last few years, because they have so little work experience. No high school shop classes anymore, no wrenching or basic electrical knowledge. We often ask, did you repair your bike or lawn mower? The 7 months of school can only teach so much. I think the question and answers were right on.

English welder here at 55 only ever worked on Rolling Stock Trains carriages & pressure vessels railway tankers. I've worked with ex off shore welders working off Aberdeen on Rigs & support vessels. in my mid 20s started wanting to go off shore but got into a relationship so it never happened..I'll always regret it never happened. I've also worked with Brits that worked for Camerons Subsea which regularly go to Houston. Interesting video definitely wish I could turn back 25 years & get the qualifications I've plenty experience of MMA welding which definitely would have helped.

@Allyourbase1990 I agree. The definition of danger is: the possibility of suffering harm or injury. Which this job has exponentially exacerbat3d by the depth of diving. This guy asked why anyone would sign up for a job that has a low life expectancy. Well, back in WWII a bombers life expectancy was not high yet people did their job. This is an inherently dangerous job and I wish he would strike reality with that. This industry needs people who know the situation. The fact that if anything goes wrong is counteracts by days of waiting is a real danger. Some people thrive in that enviroment, others don't and I don't want to work with someone who doesn't have realistic expectations of danger or is naive enough to not understand that.

I went to CDA IN JACKSONVILLE. So much hype about this career. It’s not what you think. Working offshore. You’ll be a tender for Atleast 4 years before splashing. Made a few dives before I got out of the career. Very inconsistent work if you decide offshore. I won’t speak on inland diving because I’ve never worked it. But each hitch was sat dive job. But with my new career with the union was the way to go. Making more money in my first year than I have ever working offshore. Do your research and ask around before you decide to spend thousands on schooling for this!

@zackmorgan4500
@zackmorgan4500 Жыл бұрын
@@MillieMuncher360 Well it doesn't pay more and you will have to work about the same amount of hours to make it. As a diver when you get off you are stuck on the boat cant do jack. Can't go to the store, cant' have a beer, no gals, stuck watching dvd movies listening to a bunch of dudes most of which you'd rather not be around until it's time to work again. I did it but if I had to do it again I would have done something else. If you do decide to go ahead with it don't work in the United States. The United States is decades behind European countries in pay and accommodations. The Gulf of Mexico is terrible and the conditions on the boats compared to the European boats is night and day. I have an agent that gets me jobs overseas I never work in the gulf anymore. Another thing you may not know is that welding underwater is not that common. Like the guy said the welds aren't strong. On just about everything they would rather bring it topside and weld it on deck and send it back down. In 30 years I've done and seen very little welding underwater. When you tell somebody you are a Commercial Diver the first thing they say is oh, you are an underwater welder. It's a common misconception very little welding going on underwater and if you get to weld in that habitat that is used very little it is exactly the same as welding out of the water nothing special.

I would look more at being a competent Commercial diver. you need to be able to do so much more then weld. Being able to weld is helpful, but there are dozens of different skills you learn that are just as helpful.

I was a driver for a few years. Don’t recommend it. It’s a popularity contest out there lol gotta know the right people to get the good jobs. You like make 16-17 inland cleaning water towers go for it. Lol Divers school make it sound like you’ll be working making stupid money and that’s not the case, at all. I made more money as a helper then I ever did in diving.

Very very true. I work with a lot of divers offshore. In the Gulf of Mexico there is very little welding underwater. A lot of company’s are only using rov’s. I could go on all day. Every yeah there is less and less diving jobs out there. Not a lot of sat jobs going it cost less money to get an ROV boat out there

Don't jump into it fresh outta highschool, you're gonna need some vocational schooling... Welding isn't just something you can pick up and do without training and understanding how metals and alloys bond. Sure you could get a job in a production factory welding a certain type of metal, that doesn't make you a welder. A true welder knows how to bond all metals and alloys accordingly and exactly what rod/wire/filler and shielding to use for the application. This stuff isn't a game kids...

The average pay for a diver, including jobs where you might weld or burn something is about 25 to 30 dollars per hour. You make all your money usually in over time or in some cases commission. Saturation diving pays the highest wages, but it is not like you are going to be doing saturation diving 365 days a year like you would do at a regular 9-5 job. The diving schools have turned the industry into a joke.
