Hindemith doesn't really fit anywhere, it's why I love him. This is a fantastic piece!

Not sure why I like this ridiculous composition but it's so much fun. Dry humor and engaging contrapuntal lines, and the funkiest chromatics...and a masterpiece of the symphonic genre. Nowhere is there a work with such vital piano playing throughout and such glorious horn accompaniment. One has to look to the northerners sibelius and Nielsen for anything remotely similar And at the same time this is so sternly modern. Some of the horn outbursts sound more like Gershwin or Bernstein than European. A polyglot of styles, not quite as evolved as Schnittke but certainly anticipating it. A style refreshingly distinct from the American symphonists like Hanson and Piston though not altogether a different sound world. When the horns and piano and harp alternate in their precious dialogue we start to feel the air of the French salon but never stray too far from Germanic gravitas due to the pianos insistence on tradition. The harp finally gives way, the piano goes round and round, the harp struts and begs, but the piano commands respect though never aggressively. A more American than European horn drama takes us back to the piano. But that darn harp just wants to stay involved. The piano never loses its sense of being the leader and the harp though prominent knows now that it is merely accompaniment. Personally I almost want the harp to drop out but is quite insistent until finally we make our way back to the more northern quietude of piano and horn until finally it returns to the shape of the beginning. And what happens - the harp comes back with some chords more prominent than ever. And it concludes quietly.

This work dates from the maturity of Hindemith. He has now a language of his own, which he handles with creativity.

A masterpiece. It's obvious how much Tippett was indebted to Hindemith.

less than 24000 views after 8 years plus seems kinda of sad such genius goes unnoticed maybe genius is really rare nowadays perhaps to truly like this music maybe you have to be one of the rare people of kindred spirit

I have always liked Hindemith. As an amatuer music lover. I stumbled acros recordings available in Tower Records and various libraries of many of Hindemith's more popular works. Now with KZbin and so much music available I have had opportunity to explore numerous areas of 20th Century composed music. I come back to Hindemith after years of exposure to Schoenberg, Bartok, Shostakovich, and much less well known masters like Elliott Carter, Ernst Krenek, Charles Wuorinen, and many many others (the French, the Northern European, American, South Amerricans, and I'm still leaving out huge segments of important composed 20th Century Music) and find Hindemith very fresh, relevant, and above all enjoyable.

Yes, Hindemith has his own idiom....For years, all I knew of him was Mathis....now I believe I have a Glen Gould CD that's colossal. Ginastera, too, is a wonder. Greetings from México!

@@steveegallo3384 interesting you mention Ginastera. I summarily dismissed a Ginastera piano sonata as "nice" but not great and got taken to task for my demeanor as if I was trolling. I do not do that in the area of Xxth century music. I'm too passionate about modern music to troll. Anyway, I like Ginastera, and I keep trying, I have not had an Experience listening to Ginastera yet. I have had an experience with Chavez piano concerto and works of Villa Lobos... thanks for reading if you got this far. Hindemith is a towering genius.

It seems, piano and orchestra play different music. Orchestra plays something extremely dissonant, piano is sounding much more traditional. Probably, it is something about a conflict between a person and a vulgar society, Shostakovitch-like.
