I just happened to open my first bottle of Jura 10 last night. It was nice, pleasant, gentle, enjoyable. I would not say "dull" as that has a bit of a negative content. Great Scotch for a beginner I think. George Orwell spent some time on Jura to try to get well, so that is why I tried this whisky (big Orwell fan).

Yea I came across that. Didn't find a point where it made sense to include in the video but I thought that was pretty cool

The point you make about smelling the residual whiskey is something I've noticed even right after finishing a pour. I'll nose it 5 minutes later and often find it so much more inviting. It's almost always like smelling a really nice scented candle.

Tried this dram and had much the same though, this might be a good choice for the starting scotch drinking who is looking to feel a balance of flavors at a low proof. However if that's what someone wants I would far recommend a Compass Box blend. But once I step out of my whisky-nerdom I realize that 99% of people walking past this on the shelf will see a cool shape, and a "10 year old single malt scotch" which is super fancy and then enjoy the relatively non aggressive flavors. Thanks for the review Bill, always great to see another Dic Tip!

i picked up a bottle of jura 12 year for new years, but didn't end up breaking the seal until today while watching your video about it. this is my first venture into single malt scotch as i am used to drinking canadian blended rye whiskeys but looking for something with more character. without having any exposure to any other single malt scotch, i would certainly rate this higher than "meh" as this is still lightyears ahead of the typical canadian whiskey as far as character goes. however i can see where you are coming from as i was still surprised at how "mellow" and "muted" the nose and flavors were, i was certainly expecting a lot more, although i would not say i am disappointed in any way. i am going to subscribe to your channel and will be looking forward to hearing about all the options available to me, hoping to learn of some similarly priced single malts to try in the future.

The one in this review is Jura 10. I suspect your Jura 12 is better although it's still 40% so the muted nose and taste would persist. Either way I'm glad youre enjoying it! Thanks for the sub

I bought a bottle of the Jura 10 and couldn't figure out the nose. After watching your video, I think the nose is a salty sea breeze. Peaty scotches are not my first choice but peat devotees would love it. It tasted like leather and cigarette smoke to me and I found it to be enjoyable. I'd rate it a TRY IT!

Jura 21 yr tide is one of my favorites. It has a cigar flavor on the finish that I've never tasted in another whiskey. Definitely worth trying if you can find it

I tried two different whiskies from the previous range of Jura, the Origin 10 which was sweet, mellow and easy to drink and the Prophecy, my favorite of the two, heavily peated, with hints of sea spray and spices, quite complex and very tasty. I think that either one of them would be much better than the Jura 10, judging by your taste notes in this review.

I kinda agree. I do believe that this should be in everyone’s stash. Like he said, it’s not a life changing whiskey with lots of layers, but it is an incredibly tasty, one dimensional whiskey that chooses a couple of really great sherry flavors and punches you in the mouth with them! It’s an intermediate Scotch that is incredibly crushable and far better than Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Monkey Shoulder, etc. It’s an inoffensive, easy sipper…

I concur! I’d pick Jura 10 over Macallan 12 any day! Jura is just incredibly crushable with no drama.

Thanks for the review and all the information, including the marketing “issues”. I saw a bottle of Jura Seven Wood at my local store, but the price was too steep for me to buy it. After this review, the comments to it, and other information I’ve gathered, I’m going to hold off on the Jura until I’ve tried other expressions on my (rapidly growing) list.

the only one I had was Jura Superstition, was higher ABV and I did like it. Other I have in my collection it is 16 yo, discontinued right now. Don’t forget it’s made by same people who makes Dalmore. Cheers Bill!

I absolutely love Jura 10. I have 4 jura bottles, their RUM and RED WINE offerings are on top of my list. To be fair, I am yet to try a Jura bottle I don't like. You absolutely MUST try, at least try, the rum cask one. So nice. I can't recommend the rum cask enough. Must be said, my palette is atrocious, so take that with a spoon full of salt, but Jura has turned into my affordable scotch brand of choice.

I agree with you on the 'dullness' however my brother got me a bottle of the journey for Xmas and I'm enjoying it a surprising amount. On the seven wood I wasn't keen but then I was a little annoyed at the time after trying the 18 and finding its chill filtered coloured and 40% which may have coloured my judgement

I have not tried Jura. But I am American; of British, Scottish, and Irish descent. I trust my provenance in that at bare minimum the saccharine alcohol content will so melliferously assuage that inveterate anxiety that plagues the depths of my eldritch soul all day long working my ass off to just make ends meet. I am just a humble car mechanic. Whiskey of even this anemic caliber resonates and adumbrates all that is either right or wrong with this ineffable world. It will taste sweet either way. Cheers.

I´ve only tried the Journey, and that was way below meh, so I’m skipping this one. I also agree regarding the 40%. Most of the 40´s taste a bit watery to me. There’s so many great 43 and above that doesn’t break the bank out there… 😊

I find the 12 a significant step up flavour-wise on the 10 but wish they would follow the market and offer a higher abv. Why bottle at 40% like the Journey and the 10? They’re just losing customers. Independent bottlings are rare but worth hunting down: a Battlehill single cask 13 year old is delicious and 46%, natural presentation.

@javirios9234

I think is a buy it because it's not bad and the price at $40 is pretty good for any 10yr old in the market nowadays. Yes the avb is my main negative but it's not a deal killer to buy one time. Also, I think the bottle shape has to do with the surface because a mostly common round bottle can break easier in a voyage vs the Jura bottle which has less surface making it harder to break. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.😂😂

I'd agree that it's a not bad whisky, personally I wouldn't ever buy the more entry level versions. The 18 and the seven wood are ok, but I'd probably only get it if it was on offer. Good for a pour or two, but not worth having a whole bottle unless you really like it.

Definitely in the ignore it category. Did oddly well in my highland/islands blind though. Only $40 but better off with say Maker's Mark Cask Strength for the same price or Deanston Virgin Oak and Loch Lomond 12 for less.

Great review, it is definitely good whiskey, I do miss Jura 16, I even buy tasting simpler set that has 16-year-old I think that's the best the head, but 18-year-old and five wood is also great. Definitely anyone should try it.

I picked this up in South Carolina last year, I also feel like it's a try, but i agree, nothing special, but ok. I like sherry bombs and this isn't it. It's not heavy enough, I'm a big fan of stuff like Mac 12, GlenDronach 12, La Santa, and this stuff just feels too light.

I loved my visit to Jura and greatly enjoyed interacting with the knowledgeable young staff. However I am not a fan of the new style. Especially the 10 which is boring as you say. Also do not like Journey much, rather buy a blend. Instead I am buying as many bottles of Prophecy and Superstition as I can get while they are still available.

That's why it took me over ten years to try this. I'll either buy cheaper stuff with the same specs or expect better specs from a single malt at the $40 price point. It should have at minimum 43% ABV. Natural presentation would help immensely in terms of having interest in trying it (no chill filtration, no added color).

Like or Dislike: Like. The observation that 40% is what killed the whiskey is a good bottom line. Either the master distiller is doing a poor job or he's being pressured by management to dilute the product.
@TheWhiskeyDictionary

I have to think its the latter. I don't think any master distiller wants to put out product at 40%

In the American market where whiskey is priced ridiculously high, there may be higher expectations on spec. I know I have higher expectations. Cheapest I've seen for this is $40. I want more flavor in my single malt. That means either or both higher ABV and or no chill filtration. I don't need this to be 100 proof but somewhere between 86 and 92 would be a start. 40 proof is speaking to the less engaged customer IMO. No added color is a nod to us Scotch whiskey nerds out there who don't want anything unnecessary added and put value in something being as honest and genuine as possible. So if Jura wants to attract the more engaged scotch lovers out there and not just the casual novice they should give us better specs.
