It seems odd after 50 years of motocross that the AMA would not have a lengthy instructional meeting for under experienced flaggers. If you have weekend warriors that want to help instead of just spectating the race then you have a better chance of having a good flagging crew. Local races are where the promoters should be trying to get riders to come out and be the flaggers. This isn't rocket science, it has been done yeas ago, it just needs to be implemented. Not saying that technology would not help, it would be a great thing for these events.

Good comment. I've flagged Thunder Valley for multiple years. The orientation and training for flaggers is seriously lacking. Putting together a crew seems almost like a knee-jerk response to staffing the flagging crew. The AMA needs much better people in management positions to create a system that really works. If I knew anyone in the AMA, I'd volunteer to help with that. Unfortunately, I have no clue who to approach.

@@johntomasik1555 Why not just go straight to Mike Pelletier, he would make a suggestion, or simply blow you off and leave it up to the track crews, not sure which. But it seems they do need crew leaders that know something about it.

It'll be interesting to see how the AMA implements that new GPS/light control system. Hopefully they're thinking it through and will have a thorough plan. Unfortunately, I'm not sure they will, as historically they've been very sloppy and unprepared in many aspects like rule enforcement or even their present flagging system. If they intend to control only the WOG lights, then coverage by that system will be very minimal, as the WOG lights are positioned only at blind jump take-offs, and even then they still don't get full coverage of the track. For a system to truly supplement the existing flaggers, there will need to be 20+ light systems on the track, at least, and that's for a small track like Thunder Valley (which I flag at every year). Also, unless they get fancy with the system, including thorough instructions for the riders, the system still won't be able to fully replace the flaggers, as a good flagger will provide information to the riders where they need to go to avoid the issue. Of course, that only works if the riders will actually listen. I've had many instances where riders could've easily changed their line to where I was telling them to go, and they completely ignored me. So, training for the riders will need to be essential....again something the AMA struggles with. The comment on the show of largely ignoring the flaggers and looking at the lights is one that doesn't support what's really going on or an understanding of the information a flagger can provide, given an undefined light system using that GPS approach. What would be nice is to put people into positions who really understand the importance of thinking through, planning, training, follow through, and follow up. Even with our present flagging system, the AMA stinks at all of it. Heck, the guy who was briefing our flaggers was doing it from memory, forgetting quite a few things in the process. And, he most certainly isn't the only one....I point the finger at the AMA itself, as whoever runs that show is pretty much incompetent.

He isn't going to Ducati. Theres no way star will let him go if hes winning. And why would he want to leave a proven team for a bike and team that nobody knows shit about?
