Immediately upon release, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was hailed by popular consensus as containing the best web-swinging mechanics in a Spider-Man game yet, handily displacing Insomniac's first Spidey game with a variety of new animations and mechanics. But what do these innovations tell us about the future of web-swinging?
Well, hit the play button, and I'll talk non-stop for 20 minutes to answer that very question!

SM2 needs a swinging overhaul that brings back more mechanics from the original Spider-Man 2 movie game, like if you web a streetlamp you can loop around it with your web and launch off, or stay on and point launch off it, same with large poles. Also would like to bring back the "double web" to either quickly switch swing directions or slingshot off.

Finally a TRUE appreciation of just how much Miles Morales improved on the first game. Most reviews just said “yay webs good again” and never really gave the air tricks their proper praise. I played the first game for easily over 100 hours but it was always in short bursts cause the swinging was so baseline in the first. I was honestly afraid Insom would rest on their laurels and make minor improvements to swinging in MM but instead they made all of these massive improvements plus some more you didn’t talk about. Thank you for actually showing how massive and sweeping these changes really are. Hope someone at Insom sees your video man amazing editing and fantastic video 👍🏽

Okay, you not only identified every improvement from Miles Morales to the traversal, you not only took inspiration from previous Spider-Man games systems to add in this, not only used inspiration from Tony Hawk Pro Skater… you also suggested huge improvements to the venom traversal powers and then suggested traversal gadgets for Peter in a GLIDING SYSTEM, not to mention web-slinging through traffic and WALL RUNNING IMPROVEMENTS!? Dude, if I could give this video a hundred likes, I would, because you made this with a lot of passion and care and it shows in how great this video is. 🙂

*UPDATE:* Be warned that this video features some excessive motion that has caused headaches and nausea for some of the audience. I definitely went overboard with fast pace and the sheer density of clips featuring rapid camera movements; the effect is pretty overwhelming, and something I should have taken the time to recognize before finishing the video. I regret this and apologize to everyone justifiably put off by it. And I'll definitely slow things down in future videos! *ORIGINAL COMMENT:* It took me a little while to put this together, but after such a wonderful reception (and view count!) on my last Spider-Man video, I figured I had to make another. ;) So here's some thoughts on the new mechanics of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, as well as some ideas about where Insomniac can go next with the swinging! I can't promise when my next big video will be ready, but I definitely have some more games I want to talk about... and also, a script. ;)

This video is golden. The editing, your ideas and the information you provide in the video is spectacularly well done. You literally read my mind when talking about the minor limitations of webslinging. For example, the player automatically detaching off their web after holding RT for too long, the annoying parkour + super jump combo and the noticeable limitation of swinging too close to the ground. Also, you can actually keep the momentum when pressing dodge in the first game, although the player had to go a certain speed and the dodge didn't gain any significant distance. However, in Miles Morales, when you dodge and use hold the air tricks button, it carries the momentum to whatever direction you dodged towards. You could kinda do that in the first game but the distance you'd get was lackluster compared to MM. Anyways, the passion and dedication in this video is so amazing to see. I hope more people get to see this video and you've definitely earned a sub from me.

Anyone who gets headaches and such should already be aware and not watch things they know to contain lots of fast movements, like anything with Spider-Man. You did a kick ass job on this video. Don't dampen your spark because some are blinded. They can look away if you're shining too bright man. Don't take the peanuts out of your peanut butter. Let those with the allergy not eat it, or suffer the consequences.
@TheWhoniversalMan
@TheWhoniversalMan 2 жыл бұрын
@@abrahamlinkin2414 I haven't experienced physical strain from the video personally, but I completely agree with a lot of criticism that the overall effect is distracting and overwhelming. Watching it back, I find it hard to stay focused on the content of the voiceover when so much is happening onscreen without ever pausing a moment to let an idea sink in; the two are meant to correspond quite a bit, but sometimes I think you need time to process it before moving onto the next idea. I do think the energetic vibe of it is kind of neat, but it was really the result of trying too hard to get the video done in what I considered a timely manner; simply inserting two-second pauses in a variety of spots would mostly clear up those issues. The previous Spider-Man video is essentially in the same style, but has a little more breathing room, and I've never seen a single complaint like the ones this video regularly receives. I'm grateful that a lot of people really enjoy this video, but the pacing and friction between visuals and voiceover is something I'll pay more attention to in the future. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm. :)

Miles Morales really changed the game (literally) for both the combat and swinging mechanics in this franchise. Often, whenever I'm playing the game, I'll blast some music and try to chain swings and tricks together like an elaborate dance. ForMarvel's SM2, maybe they should put in a setting where you can switch it from animation-based swinging (what it's basically at now) to physics-based swinging (which lets the player sorta break the rules and push the game to its limits like in SM2). Combine it with a revamped Miles Morales's air trick system, some other new additions (slingshot from SM3 or web climbing from Web of Shadows), and I think it'll be close to a perfect swinging system.

I've replayed Spider-Man so many times since 2018, platinum-ed the game, bought and played through the DLC. I'd like to think I have a good handle on everything that makes the first game so good. But when I finally got to play Miles Morales, it felt like something I couldn't quite see had changed. I couldn't put my finger on what it was at first but I just knew that whatever it was it made Miles Morales' gameplay feel even better than the first that I sunk so many hours into. After a long time of thinking about it, and also stumbling upon this video, I finally know why. The improved traversal system, the new animations, the new venom powers, the improved immersion seeing Miles being able to take off his mask mid-cutscene with the costume of your choice still equipped, the expanded stealth takedowns (going back to SM1 I immediately miss the wall and ceiling takedowns). Insomniac did such a good job with MM and I love just how much *style* the game has, and I'm super excited to see if they can take all these improvements and take it to the next level in SM2.

One of the things I would add (to the already great recommendations in this video) is a much better sense of momentum between actions. When diving from tall skyscrapers, my swing should be super fast which should translate into a faster wall run which should translate into a bigger leap off of the wall. Momentum breaks make Spider-Man feel slow and rigid. Games like Titanfall 2 did the momentum very well. I’d love to see the web wings too so I could glide through the city like Prototype. I’d also add mechanics like climbing up webs, being able to web zip vertically up in the air, and a web slingshot.

The fact that they were able to improve so much on the web swinging in just two years for a smaller game just gets me hyped to see how much more they can do. Not to mention Miles is a growing character and could probably use his venom powers like Cole McGrath in the Infamous games. Maybe give Peter some unique traversal abilities as well with working web wings?👀 I don’t think there’s anything disappointing about the first games web swinging. I think it works perfectly for what we had at the time. I simply see it as a wonderful foundation for the future of web swinging. Hope Insomniac implements this stuff in their next game😁

And btw, they must have started on the sequel of Spider-Man 2 in 2019... miles was done by a different team, so Spider-Man 2 and Miles morales must have been within the works coherently without interruptions between the two. And if Spider-Man 2 started in 2019? But finnishes it's development within the fall of 2023! That would make five years of development for Spider-Man 2... far greater amount than Miles Morales. Seriously! How they're keeping this game SEVERLY CLOSE to their chest excites me... insomniac and bryan intihar KNOW that they have something special within their hands. So obviously, they want to take their sweet precious time on making the game and truly preparing it to be revealed within the right time when the gameplay is ready to be showed off. I feel like were extremely close to entering that final stage of them FINALLY coming out of the sahdows (like Death when he came out of the shadows in puss in boots within that crystal area scene) and knock the wind out of fans and players from what they got to show off. They have such high potential. And i believe they'll deliver Expo-*DITIOUSLY*

I'd like to see ALL your ideas be implemented beautifully. It's exactly how I'd also see the game develop in the future along with some other things like being able to link and charge jumps while parkouring, off the walls, while running on the walls, etc. I always loved the scenes in the movies where spidey just zips and swings and jumps and dodges obstacles or flicks around them somehow, never losing his momentum

2 things made this web swinging better: 1. Variety. There's so much variety here that you can never truly get bored. I never got bored in the first one BUT the variety in MM makes it natural 2. How wacky Miles moves are. I remember someone saying in a comment that they should make peter move more like in the comics. Well that's what MM does. The wacky movement translates well into momentum and again the animations helps a lot too Ik there's more behind the improvements. Their momentum mechanics improved, diving off a building feels very good whereas it felt stale in the first game etc. But the two major differences were comic book swinging and variety

The is the best video I've watched in a while here on KZbin. I really hope someone at Insomniac watches this especially the proposal section because everything you've explained here makes for the perfect traversal mechanic in terms of Spider-Man games. Just when we thought the swinging system in the first game was great, Miles Morales comes along with its various more fluid animations and air tricks. I honestly can never play the first game ever again simply because of the swinging being so basic compared to MM. I want the sequel to be just like this. I want it so that I can never be able to play Miles Morales ever again after playing the sequel.

Absolutely agree! I would also add that the parkour-system needs to be updated too. Maybe you could have an agility mode where every face button is temporarily dedicated to tricks, just like in Tony Hawk. Unlike the square-button, triangle still does nothing in the air and on ground circle is just a combat dodge

Came back to this banger of a video after the reveal for Spider-Man 2 and while we only got very small look at the swinging for SM2 I gotta say I’m a little disappointed. The web wings are cool but I wanted to see the swinging perfected first before we moved away from that. The slingshot is actually awesome but the swing Miles does after looks incredibly slow for how fast he was moving before. All of Peters swinging was in a fight over water and it was very obvious that not only does he have the same exact animations but the game still has that barrier over the ground. Hoping the barrier was so high because it was a water level and a demo so they really don’t want a swing to get messed up but it really seems like they’ve doubled down on the animation based swing system. Miles even had the same animations as Peter in the demo. I’m hoping this is just a demo thing because this also happened w SM:MM as the swinging looked exactly the same until the game came out. The reveal also wasn’t traversal focused so I’m not doubting Insom just a little disappointed by that aspect of the reveal. I really wanted to see Miles whip off of his web after that slingshot but the game just doesn’t seem to have any physics still.

You kinda mentioned the exact thing I've been complaining about in both the Spider-Man games. The traversal is too easy and simple. I feel like the game is holding my hand too much and treating me like a little baby. I want to lose some serious health when I make a mistake while web-swinging, I don't care how many years Peter has been Spider-Man. And I want to play around with the most random ragdoll physics animations I can pull off as well as some serious swinging speed. I don't want to be limited by default animations, including the ones of Miles. I want to be able to do a full looping when holding on to a web just like in Spider-Man 2, stuff like that. If I can't fully explore and experiment with a system, be punished when I make mistakes and learn throughout that whole journey, then what's the point of me playing something that's basically a movie? I could clearly just watch a playthrough on KZbin and it would make little to no difference. I need the adrenaline kick of swinging through the city with my heart beating everytime I jump off a building flying towards the pavement at full speed.
@youngspecial64

I agree on risk... But damage? You can still achieve the same thing without damage. It would just seem unnecessary. If we are able to fall, fail, but still keep on getting up every single time... that brings a greater emphasis on truly improving ourselves and diving deep into a system. It's something that is accessible for everyone but gives hardcore players a deep challenge to do so much more... even for the little guy's. Spider-Man 2 will be insomniac's greatest masterpiece! i can feel it to my bones.

On top of everything you said I feel like they need to introduce web travel delay…yes delay…go look at the next 3 web lines that Peter shoots at 0:30 of “the amazing Spider-Man 2 opening scene” on KZbin. obviously the web shooters shoot fast but it shouldn’t be so fast to the point where the web magically attaches to a building instantly in order to float us back up when we’re 0.01 seconds from splatting on the road-the shorter the distance..cool attach instantly…the longer the distance then web travel time should be varying depending on different distances but no longer than 2 seconds I’d say …introducing this mechanic will allow for more thrill, skill, challenge, a sense of reward for timing out swings correct at different points of traversal because you don’t want to press R2 too late and smash into the road…this specific mechanic would have so much potential not only to make the game play exactly as the amazing Spider-Man 2 movie looked…which was some of the most fluid best swinging we’ve seen in spidey movies but it would add a sense of danger making pulling of swings and tricks more rewarding when traversing You get me ?
@icarusgaming6269
@icarusgaming6269 2 жыл бұрын
For the skidding or running along the ground move, you can add the reward of a big jump if you manage to hit at just the right altitude. Too high and you'll pendulum like normal, missing the opportunity to switch actions with the jump. Too low and you'll hit the ground, breaking your combo. To really make this worth it, the auto swing needs to be retuned so there's more incentive to not just hold down the button. We can still allow it for accessibility's sake, but there would be more opportunities for personal timing if it went off almost immediately after you left the previous line. This allows casual players to still only worry about timing their jumps, but advanced players can now strategize where in their arc to shoot a new line. Sometimes you might want to do it as soon as possible to build altitude, which isn't allowed under the current system

I have the same thought... Man, insomniac has so much potential on their hands for Spider-Man 2... it is killing me of us not seeing anything yet, but they want this "reveal" to be perfect as possible. And if they're keeping this game heavily close to their chest when it comes to the gameplay, for a damn YEAR... they know that they have something special within their hands. If they started in 2019 and ended in the fall of 2023... that makes five years of development, like ELDEN RING, and if that's so? Yet it took miles, i believe, one or 2 years to be a little bit better than Spider-Man ps4! On GOD, Spider-Man 2 will be something legendary to witness. I can feel it...

Yeah, mostly the same set of animations, floatiness when swinging over the water without any contextual animations to smooth it over... a couple new mechanics, but I'm not seeing an obvious change in the fundamentals. The web wing gliding could certainly be interesting, but I'm a little worried about how it's balanced with the regular swinging, as it looks like gliding is just vastly faster and more efficient. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the game a lot, and I hope a lot of other people do, but right now it doesn't look like the fundamentals are going to be any more satisfying than the previous games.

WOW!!! What a fluid-flowing editing and talking style! This analyzing video is one of the best videos I have seen on youtube! You definitely have an instinctive feeling of how to edit what and when and how you combine your talking flow with the visual pacing of your editing... And also the flashiness, you took specific animations to clearly inform the watcher of what you want to say and what you are talking about. The first thing that hooked me emotionally but more important on a creative level was at @0:38 when you began your sentence but then decided to let the next seconds of video be played out without talking so the pictures and feelings could speak for themselves. And then your deep-dive into the swinging system and how you are describing your thoughts and ideas for game improvements and how you connect and synchronize your explanations with the scenes and gameplay moments and which scene appears on-screen at which exact second and even which millisecond of your talking flow. In short ... dude ... use more of your talking and editing skill in this creative way ... that´s amazing!

Great Video! glad you addressed the complexity of the web-swinging in this game being too simple and hand holding. here is my key point; I don't mind the running mechanic in older games when you miscalculate the length of your web. it would be nice if there was a climbing web mechanic that can save you from that and make spidey make the moves he did on that cutscene. other than that everything in the video is perfect and Insomniac should see this and take note. because adding more animations more risk and more realistic physics without hand holding makes for a more enjoyable and challenging experience. the thing they should understand is that most people like a challenge because once you succeed it feels amazing unlike if you were guided by an invisible hand treating you like a baby. And heck this could also just be something people could toggle for accessibility. People need to share this video as much as possible.

Had to pause at the 11:42 mark. I found this video because I just was thinking abt Spiderman PS4 and decided to go rewatch your web swinging comparison video. As I was watching it I was thinking about the relationship between Fighting games, Tony Hawks Pro Skater and Spider-Mans games' web swinging mechanics. They all have a similar tension between accessibility for new/casual players and providing depth and challenge for experienced players. I think the THPS franchise has expertly handled that tension in their games while many Fighting games err too much on one side or the other while Spiderman PS4 was too easy and shallow imo. So it's pretty funny to me that after I watched your old video and had that thought, I found your new one and then here you are mentioning THPS. Ive only watched a couple of your KZbin videos but I feel like we'd be friends IRL and have good conversations about video games lol.
