Dysfunctional Otis Lexan Elevators at the University of Michigan

(September 2014) I really like Otis elevators from the 70's era, but these two just weren't in that great of shape. The first elevator was working earlier that day, but for some reason it decided to park itself on the second floor...

For the first elevator, when the call button lit up on the 3rd and 2nd floor, I think the first Elevator might have been out of service for the day. Have you filmed at least 10 Elevators that are not in very good shape? Because I did.

This was the worst time for Otis - they were starting to venture off from relays and go into a more "computer based" or "solid state" system (E.X. Elevonic) and it was HORRIBLE. The many elevators I have been on in this era (late 70s, early 80s) were extremely glitchy.

patricknedz to be honest; I don't know. I know one of them has a series 2 mod but I don't know about the rest.

Indeed, and one elevator that Otis made back in the early to mid 1980's was called the MRVF (Mid Rise Variable Frequency) elevator. This was supposedly the so-called battery powered elevator that ran off single phase power and served up to 20 floors, but supposedly had a lot of reliability problems and controller glitches. No wonder it was so short lived (made for only 5 years), many of which have been modernized, and MRVF was also called "Miserable Ridiculous Vicious Failure."

Those elevators definitely have issues. I wonder if something was wrong with the door sensor on the first one.

I was there for the hackathon, which was on the weekend of the 19th. So far I've had two random students at VT come up and say they recognized me, but not anywhere else. You would have been the first!
