Finally something about Filipino Shamanic practices. It's pretty rare that someone actually talks about it outside of the Philippines. I appreciate the content :)

Oh I envy her connection. I am Scottish/Irish Filipina. My grandfather was from Manila. For decades my twin sister and I could remember him from when we were young, sitting on his lap, seeing white powder on him from construction. I was in my 30's when I was told, "Honey, your grandfather passed before you were born!" How I wish his language (Tagalog) and culture were passed on to us.

Love this interview series!! I not only learned a lot of valuable and fascinating things but also saw such a variety of different kinds of practitioners that it made witchcraft so much more colorful for me.

Olivia - I am a practitioner with various influences. Some have had a stronger hold than others, but I often remind myself that it all started with the stories and superstitions my Filipina mother used to share with me since the beginning. But as I’ve matured and grown in other directions, I’ve forgotten some of the lore, and I haven’t found anything reliable in writing - as if it doesn’t exist. My mom has become a pretty extreme born again Christian, so when I ask her about it, she now claims that none of it is true. I can’t tell you how much it means to me to see not just another Filipina practitioner, but one who acknowledges the traditions and lore that found its way to, or originated from, the Philippines. It would be really neat to learn whether you grew up with the same superstitions I did!

My grandmother practices folk healing and her cousin is a Babaylan. Sadly, no one in the family had the chance to inherit the practice. I also practice the craft except that it's Hekatean witchcraft.

I wish I knew half of what this woman knew. She seems so vast in knowledge I hope one day I do hold her knowledge. I grew up in American. Full Filipina mom and white dad. My mom did not teach the language, did not teach the culture and for the most part kept that to herself when I was a child. It wasn't until I grew up and smelt all the food my mom would cook for work lunch tomorrow when I asked about the food and would eat some. My mom was so surprised I loved It, how I loved my sinigang extra sour like her, how I loved my adobo with extra pepper like her, how I loved the caldereta she would make and would beg for when it's cold. I was one child out of 4 who had a natural curiosity for my culture. I don't know much about my family and I wish if my great lolo and lola were alive I would talk to them for hours. Right now all I have is my moms very vague memory of her family.

Sounds like it's time for a family trip to the Philippines. You didn't use the word "late," so I assume your mom is still around. So take a trip with her to the Philippines, if you are able to arrange it; nothing jogs the memory fast than being in the location, and you know what? She may appreciate it.

@@lawrenberghanson4401 I've considered it! I've asked my mom if she's ever thought about visiting of which she's reply she doesn't need to go because there's no family there (and this is true, in the 80's my entire family up and left to Seattle or Toronto.) She grew up in Quezon though. One day I hope to have enough money to take her on a trip to visit great grandma and grandpas grave.

My great grandmother was a "manghihilot" and my grandmother was doing "tawas" (a Filipino folk ritual using alum or kandila to determine bad spirits). It was pass on to me and I am naturally gifted to make hilot or give reiki to others. I was also taught "kulam" by my aunt. I feel so weird and I am so glad you posted this topic on Filipino shamans. Thank you.

I felt the same way going in to Peruvian shamanic arts. I felt like it was bringing me in to a culture that wasn't mine and I did not have the ability to travel, to get more connected to the culture and meaning of the tradition. I couodn't put that in to words until you saud it. I find I take the concepts in to my own practice that's centered around my land and upbringing. Thank you

This is sort of an odd coincidence, I’ve vaguely followed you for a while but haven’t been doing much witchcraft lately so haven’t caught up with your videos. In the meantime, I’ve been learning a lot of Tagalog because my boyfriend is Filipino and I’m constantly surrounded by the language. So to come back to your videos and see this is so neat! My boyfriend is not witchy at all but it’s still interesting to know, and helpful context for all the other things I’ve been learning language and culture wise. 🇵🇭

How do you advise going about asking grandparents about our own family / ancestry’s practices? I’m just kinda scared of opening that up in case my super catholic grandma’s like… 🔥WITCHRAFT IS EVIL💀 you know??

Personally I’d try to just get more insight on their upbringing and superstitions. Much of a spiritual practice is very subtle and woven into everyday things.

I don’t usually share my personal journey. But I feel safe around here coz we’re all the same, I felt like I found a tribe that would understand my path . Yeah I know a lot of Christian witches like her. My New Romantic pair (which is my final and soon to be husband as confirmed by not only my cards but a lot of other fellow card readers, Angel numbers and all other synchronicities, I’m not bragging but I manifested him LOL), anyway he’s Filipino, and I’m German/Indian/Irish, he and most of his family is a 7th day Adventist and some are Catholics some are Christian’s, that’s why when we were friends at my surprise he was intrigued with my practices and interest, and of course we had a lot of intriguing exchanges that caused that intense bond, but I wasn’t expecting goddess Hecate to send him to me, as a goddess of Magick, he loves Jesus Christ and loves listening to Jesus related songs, when we both realized how both deities are both active as active as all the other deities according to their shared experiences, we realized we’re being united for more harmony and that in the end there are no enemies, like just because someone else worships another deity who’s very different from yours doesn’t makes you enemies, we felt like if we’re connecting we’re connecting all the higher powers all together. I actually saved him from a serious illness that could’ve killed him, and I’m so thankful we met by the time I have knowledge in magick or else I’ll get depressed everyday due to it. And the way he spoke to me he felt exactly the same for me where he can no longer imagine us losing each other, he’s so caring as I am. And at first our connection was in conflict due to some financial reasons that kind of caused a bit of a war in my family and his but we resolved them very quick together.
