Concise and well explained, good job! There are a lot of tutorials for buttonholes out there that go on for half an hour - for me as a beginner, this here was straight to the point and sufficient to do the job well. Thank you very much!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm a complete beginner in sewing and I'm currently turning a normal dress shirt into a granddad shirt for a first project. I looked through so many buttonhole tutorials and every single one of them edited the video in a really bad way where they place a video cut between putting the needle through the fabric and then pulling the needle through the loop. It was really confusing because I never knew where that loop came from. Thank you so much for not over editing this video and explaining everything so nicely!! Love it❤

Yup, sometimes hand sewing is still the best go-to because machines can't handle all fabrics as well.

@@Thewoodlandelf So, the pants I'm updating and adding the button holes into (so I can add feed a cord into it and tighten as needed), worked out well. Maybe a little messy, but still good. And then I realised... I put them on the back, not the front! 😬 It's fine, no one will notice on the back. It's just more practice

Hi i have a question how can i make the hole the exact size of my button
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 2 ай бұрын
Cut a slit that's a smidge smaller than the diameter of your button (around an eighth inch smaller). The hole will expand as you sew around the edges, so if you start with the smaller hole, it should be big enough for the button after sewing the edges.

0:53 how long to make the thread? :)
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 4 ай бұрын
It'll depend on big your buttonhole is going to be, but generally I just start with around 2 feet of thread (which becomes two tails of around 1 foot once the needle in threaded).

The uttonhole looks very frail, homemade and incomplete
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 11 ай бұрын
It is homemade, so that part makes sense, lol. As for frail, I've honestly never had a buttonhole wear out when I do it this way, whereas the storebought ones wear out fairly frequently. I've generally found this is one of the strongest ways for me to make a buttonhole, but if you have another way I'd love to hear it. Always looking to improve upon my sewing skills.

The stitches are too far apart
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 5 ай бұрын
So far I haven't run into a problem with this spacing; the buttonholes have always held up fine. But if you're worried about it not holding up, you can always just make the stitches closer, using the same technique. It's flexible.
@robinmotherway6151
@robinmotherway6151 2 жыл бұрын
This is not proper buttonhole stitch, just small blanket stitch. This is not as stable as buttonhole stitch which has a small knot on the edge and id sewn in the opposite direction. Good luck.
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info 😊 Though I've never found it to be a problem doing it this way. It's how I was taught and how I've always done it, and haven't had one come apart on me yet. I've even used it to repair buttonholes that came apart on bought items, and it holds well.
