Your story about a Turkey shoot reminded me of something that happened to me about 40 years ago. I carried my oldest daughter to a local Turkey shoot when she was five. I competed with my 12 gauge but did not win. On the second round, Hollie, asked me if she could shoot in the second round, so I said ok. One of the shooters had a 20 gauge shotgun and loaned it to me for her to use. So, she shot in turn and she only got one pellet in the target but it was dead center in the cross hair on the target, so she won the Turkey. I let her carry it into the house when we got home. Her mother said “ I see your father won a Turkey!” Hollie said “No, I did.” Then, I had to explain everything to her mother. She is now a high school teacher but has never forgotten her first Turkey shoot, nor have I.

ABUNDANT BLESSINGS FOR THE NEW YEAR dear Emperor and Empress Kelly! This was a lovely time of repose by the hearth and I thank you both for it! The weather surely assisted in the beehive oven...a Great Gift, when the heat of the year kicks in...I can only imagine dear Catherine's beautiful smile. Is it a Christmas gift for your Empress, Peter? If so...what a fine bit of 'giving'! Always nice to time the 'brawn of Brandon's' arrivals eh? For those of you that do blacksmithing; one of the New Year’s traditions on New Years Day was the village blacksmith would haul out 2 anvils in front of his shop. Place one upside down out on the street; then fill the cavity with black powder and place the other anvil on top, right side up. A small channel chiselled or filed on the bottom of the anvil would provide a point of ignition either by a fuse or a touch-hole. The tradition was called “Ringing the Anvil!” Depending on the size of the cavities and anvils; the sound carried for quite a ways through the settlement. The upper anvil got blown at least a few feet into the air‼️
@TheWoodlandEscapeКүн бұрын
Wow, what a tradition. Thanks for sharing that! I might just have to try it next time year.
@randolphchappel609819 сағат бұрын
Just one word of caution; there are some ridiculous videos out there of guys that have ground out bigger cavities In their anvils and have launched 100 pound anvils like 150 feet into the air. When the anvil lands; it’s just about buried itself into the ground! Their method; they’re using pounds of powder. The tradition I’m talking about is maybe a 1/4 pound of powder at the most.
@TheWoodlandEscape2 сағат бұрын
@ Sorry, I was being a bit tongue in cheek… not likely to be blowing my anvil anytime soon. I do appreciate your fine council though.

Happy New Year Peter & Kathy. As a kid, I had the good fortune to live in Edinburgh in the mid '60's. The tradition there was similar to what you talked about. The tradition there was to start at one house and have a drink. Then everyone would move to the next house down the street along with their bottle where it would be repeated. This was repeated until the whole street/neighborhood was covered. This all took place on New Years Eve.

Now ya sure can’t beat this for the start of a new year, a dob oven platform, roof joists and glasses of cheer clicking together at hearth side! I can’t wait to see the dob oven on its stone base, that took some well to do effort to raise it to it new home! You sure don’t let the grass grow under your feet Peter! I can picture it in my minds eye and the smell of bread just out of the oven, a true traditional oven at that. My Mentor born in 1889 was one of thirteen children and next to the last. In their house in back of the walk in fireplace was the fox tail, John said it was called in these parts. An iron door big enough for all types of food to enter and exit. My Mentors name was John by the way. His Mother would get a fire going in the oven long before light and as things warmed, she’d turn the bench table upright to keep the heat around her shoulders as the fire in the hearth and oven made good heat. John said when the fruit was abundant is want uncommon that she baked 13 pies for deserts of the four meals they ate together everyday. One year John’s Mother canned 2000 jars of fruits,mostly cherries fromma bumper crop that year. They ate at 4am, 8 am, noon and then their evening meal that would run late in summers. The farm was lots of work for everyone in the family as they grew up. And after a good fire was down to coals, scraped out and cleaned a bit, the high heat foods went in first and hours later the breads and biscuits. It would be good for many hours. Keep in mind this was a large oven built against the chimney outside wall. Where I used to live my old farm house had a 5’x5’ walk-in fireplace and a fox tail, I had an old iron door I replaced the missing one with. The original domed oven was 6’ wide and as much tall. It had been torn away many years before, as many were after iron cook stoves became the norm. In season John and his family each had a quarter pie for desert with each meal. Seems like an impossible feat to eat all that but it was very hard full time labor to keep a farm going with milking cows, cattle, pigs, chickens and maintaining the crops. Their farm was several hundred acres of the original 1000 acres granted by William Penn to John’s number of Greats Grandfather. It was years to clear the land and very fertile in Lancaster County. 18 hour days was the usual and a bit less in winter. John said every Sunday afternoon all the family and neighbors would visit their farm for homemade ice cream and made with all cream. They also had an ice house, which they filled every winter. I believe it is hard for us to imagine super hard work with 18 hour days. At 13 John worked in the carriage shop in addition to the farm work. It was the beginnings of his apprenticeships. He talked about some neighbors and their dovetailed two story log house had a dirt floor. It had been limed over the years and the ground became like concrete. They’d sweat it out each morning. In the winter they would open the wide door and drag in a large log with an oxen, roll it into the very large walk-in hearth and build small fires by this huge log, that would last a month or more sometimes John said. So there were always embers around that big log and add a bit of wood for cooking and heat. I remember John saying that he didn’t have to stoop to walk in the fireplace at home or the neighbors. So it hasn’t been that long since people still used and practiced to old methods of living if they had the means. John also told me that gasoline was 7 cents a gallon and kerosene was 11 cents a gal. And we should not forget that maintaining those kerosene lamps was an everyday job, filling them, trimming wicks and cleaning chimneys from being smoked up! Not the purified paraffin clean burning oil of today’s novelty lighting. And we can’t forget the outhouse, it’s cleaning and maintenance. You can imagine with that big family it was a job in itself, even though it was a two holer! It had to be dug out regularly and moved sometimes. Then with that was the cleaning of the chamber pots from every bedroom. My Grandparents had white porcelain buckets with lids and a thin red stripe on the edges. Every morning my Grandmother would empty them and rinse them out with boiling water. I remember when they built their first bathroom with tub and toilet and the fear of bees flying up the hole of the outhouse in the summer! A bucket of lime with an old cup and a Sears catalog, at least not the early 60s. What grand memories and what a gift to have experienced the last of the old times. My Grandparents didn’t get electric back to their farm until after WWII. I have a canceled check my Grandfather wrote to the electric company in the 40s for $5-$6-$7! I am going to build a dob oven here one day, been saying that for 4-5 years now. This may well e the year with the inspiration from Kelly’s Station! A Fine As Frogs Hair New Year with many Blessings filled with Love, Light, Peace, Abundance and Joy of Being! DaveyJO in Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Dragging stuff up a 45 degree incline is not as easy as one thinks, but still a lot easier the picking it up on a 90 degree incline. I have two long 2 by 6’s that I use together my emergency generator up on my front porch, but now I just lengthened my electrical pigtail, so I can leave it on the front walk and don’t have together it up on the front porch, anymore. When you get old, you have to get smarter, to overcome your loss in strength.

Very mild so far, some poor souls flooded out. Hope everyone else getting a better start for 2025. Just occurred to me bread ovens and forges both have a long established propensity for setting fire to their surroundings. How is your fire insurance??
@TheWoodlandEscape2 күн бұрын
Just like our ancestors, the only insurance I have is my ability to rebuild. Happy New Year?

Why didn't you put the stone in flat side down?
@TheWoodlandEscape2 күн бұрын
The flat side will become the floor of the oven. In the spring it will be mortared in level and some stone added to enlarge it
