What a total joke! The Shifters of Southern California coined the phrase Rat Rod, built traditional Rods that lacked certain elements such as paint and/or upholstery. This was in the early 1990s, but unfortunately the movement has morphed in to this nonsense!

Barebones essentials with the junkyard, barnyard find look. Like you built it out of stuff you found and the first dollar you spent was on gas to start it. Not ghost flames, chrome accents, hand stitched upholstery, and tons of custom metal fabrication. They missed the mark on most of the cars in the video. But there are a few rare ones in there.

Beautiful machines but many of them actually running sounded like shyt. I have a rat rod, spent one year fabbing new sheet metal where it was rusted out. I have one garage stall shop with mostly wood tools. Bought a hydronic press, English wheel, anvil hammers and few other metal work items from harbor freight...a few times....... anyway spent another year working on the engine. That was much more fun than body fab. Initially it sounded like these guys, almost too much intake pressure and it was detonating early at low rpms, had ridiculous power though. Too much power that I went thru a set of tires in 3 months from constantly smoking them. It was fun but way too much for the rat. Spent three months futzing with it and finally tuned it to where it ran very sweet, no rough idle, not smoking tires in every gear, increased mpg two-fold ect. It still had that sweet rumble and beautiful but unnecessary engine stack. God I loved my Suze (my rat rods name 😆) I had sunk so much money into her that I was in debt upto my eyeballs and was going hungry. I sold her for a sweet profit to some guy in Silicon Valley who had so much dough that he couldn't possibly spend it all in his lifetime. I broke my heart doing it but was necessary so I wouldn't go bankrupt. I'm not criticizing these wonderful machines, they sure are machines of beauty and art. I just don't like having to feather the gas just to keep them running. Just my opinion. (Says the guy with no rat rod anymore)

A rat rod, as usually known today, is a custom car with a deliberately worn-down, unfinished appearance, typically lacking paint, showing rust, and made from cheap or cast-off parts. Source: Internet

Amazing how many “car guys” don’t know the difference between a Rat Rod and a Hot Rod. Rat Rods are rusty junk piles that have all kinds of ridiculous stuff stuck all over them. They don’t have anything shiny on them anywhere. A Hot Rod can have a chopped top, no fenders, or hood, but they have nice body work, sometimes slick paint jobs or chrome. Most people see a car (or truck) with no finders or hood and they call it a Rat Rod... WRONG!
