Bycatch (where an animal is caught in a fishing net by accident) is the main threat to sea turtles globally.
Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) allow at least 97% of turtles caught in a fishing net to escape, while keeping the shrimp.
For over 30 years, the United States of America has required the use of this kind of tool on all shrimp fisheries whose products enter the US market. The device has been mandatory in fisheries in French Guiana since 2010. But there is no such requirement in the European Union.
As the world's largest seafood market and with the largest marine territory on Earth, WWF is calling for the EU to adopt an effective law to require the use of TEDs on shrimp fisheries whose products are sold in the EU.
