This movie STAR is superb! Julie was spectacular on the SOM, Mary Poppins, Victor Victoria & all her other movies & her MFL, Boyfriend, Camelot & VV on Broadway! IMO, her greatness as an artist is beyond words in STAR! I am so blown away by her performance, acting, singing& dancing! She is no other quite like her in the history of the industry!

The real question is who is going to play julie in the julie andrews movie? I know not everyone these days how amazing she was then and that she still is just as amazing but i would be devistated if no movie would be made of her magnifacint life i would gladly do it but currantly i can only sing three octives.

Not sure if the true star here is really Gertrude Lawrence or Julie Andrews.. =_= Looking forward to watching this!

I saw Star! during it's reserved seating engagement at the Rivoli in New York and have been a fan ever since. Unfortunately it competed with Funny Girl, another film musical biography about a performer from the first half of the 20th century. But Fanny Brice in the film is a much more likeable character than Gertrude Lawrence and Streisand made a sensational screen debut.

Now for a movie on Julie's life but who could play the part????? as far as voices go I would say Jackie Evancho but I have never seen her act MAYBE she can, think about that.....when she's older of course !!!

The trouble with STAR! is that the actors are much better looking and more talented than the originals. Julie Andrews is double the magnitude of Gertrude Lawrence. Raymond Massey is an attractive and appealing man; Noel Coward was not. The film was put together as a vanity vehicle showcasing Julie Andrews to her fans, but those fans didn't care a rap about Gertrude Lawrence or know about Lady in the Dark, a minor production remembered mainly for Danny Kaye. So we have all this talent, and a wonderful overblown Sammy Cahn theme song, presenting the sad, manic, careers of second-raters.

The project was put together because 20th Century Fox had a contract with Julie to make two films. One was the SoM which had saved the company from going bust so they were very grateful. They were looking around for inspiration for a follow-up to cash in and alighted on a biopic of Gertrude Lawrence who had died in 1952 but whose heyday was in the 20s and 30s. It is unfair to say she and Coward were second-raters, they were major stars in their day - on the stage, not movies. To us they seem very mannered but that was the style in the 30s. Unfortunately by 1968 that style seemed totally irrelevant to audiences in the USA faced with war news everyday. In other countries Star! had a modest success.

@@chrisnorton4382 I agree with you. I want to love this film so much, but it is so plodding and,....well, boring. The songs, mostly, are annoying. Julie is a wonderful performer. Daniel chews the scenery. Apoligies to those who admire the film, but style over substance doesn't work.
