I have a co-worker who's from Czech Republic and I was shocked when this really sweet, soft-spoken person I'd come to be pretty close friends with, mid-conversation about something unrelated, goes "I'm sorry... but I just can't stand Black people". I was like yeah and wait, um, what? 😀 Then when she realized I wasn't agreeing, she started talking about how she was referring to the "crazy kind". Hey guys! I just discovered your channel. I'm an African-American living in the Czech Republic. I'm so sorry that on your first day visiting Prague you had that negative experience. I'm happy that in the end you had a pretty good time. Here's my take on being black in the Czech Republic: Folks here are not very experienced in dealing with people of color, so, yes, they stare and I also have been followed in some shops. As a matter of fact when I first arrived here I had dreadlocks and some people would straight up take photos and videos of me. It's a little different in Prague, but Czech people tend to come across as unfriendly because they don't smile much and are a bit shy about speaking in English. In some ways Prague is familiar with tourists from around the world, but unfortunately, there are some communities with people of color (like Africans and Roma aka "Gypsies") where some "shady" incidences have occurred in the city. Czech Republic is a beautiful country with so many nice places of nature and tons of castles and cute lil villages. I hope that you guys will be able to come back and even check out some of the beautiful smaller cities like Cesky Krumlov, Olomouc or Brno. Take care and safe travels!
@tkj2113

100% spot on! I used to stare back them the same exact way, which would make them get nervous and turn away. I agree about how beautiful the country is. We would travel to Prague to shop and then go down to Berchtesgaden in Germany. I still have my 100% crystal chess set, I purchased in Prague from the '90s.

I thought I was the only one who noticed they don't smile. They are quiet on the trains too. I asked a tour guide why they don't smile or talk. She said because when they were under communist they had to be quiet so it's developed from that. It's a beautiful city and they can be a bit unwelcoming in restaurants until.I leave a tip in USA dollars which was more than the price of the food then the " thank you madam " came out. I think it's just lack of exposure why they are like that.

It depends if you are a conscious black person, And a pan african which is rare. The Majority of black people are oblivious of discrimination they think its normal, And just want to fit in to modern western society. The majority of people in europe are anti-black there are a minority which are open minded, But that will never mask over the issues of stereotypes, Discrimination.

It’s so sad but it’s a reality for a lot of us. This exact same thing happened me to in a Victoria secret in Chile. I mean from the second we walked into the store we were being followed around. To the point where he literally ran us out the store. I’ve never experienced something like that before until that day.

I don’t know how you all showed up on my KZbin channel, but I’m so glad because I really enjoyed your video. I LOVE to see people who look like me going around the world, and doing it with integrity and respect . I’m proud of you all because it’s time that people see us for being more than skin , which doesn’t define us. I was in the Brussels , where I didn’t leave the airport because I was headed to Gambia west Africa. Some of the people working in the airport were just rude ,like if you needed to ask them a question . I’m a light black woman , but black is black all over the world to ignorant people. May GOD bless your journey wherever you all may go ,and always pray and send GOD ahead of you and GOD will keep you safe from all hurt , harm , and danger.

You should visit Prague in the run up to Christmas. The Old Town Square is full with a Christmas market and the tallest Christmas tree in Europe. The square looks absolutely beautiful! Sadly, the Czech Republic is littered with racism. Roma gypsies from Solvakia experience terrible racism and violence in the Czech Republic. I have a friend who is a Roma gypsy and she came to England to seek asylum and to escape from the backlash her family experienced. I really hope this was an isolated incident for you both. 🙏🏻

Do Roma people experience terrible racism and violence in the Czech Republic? Hmm, I would certainly say something like that if I wanted to get asylum in England. I'm from Prague and I've heard a lot exclusively about violence by Roma and their gangs. I have never heard of violence against Roma in modern times here. But it's a fact that people don't like them. They have a reputation for people who don't want to work and prefer to live off welfare (money from the state) + crime. They also make a mess around them (also in my experience). I lived in the same house with two Roma families. One was a bit noisy but otherwise OK, the other was horrible. There were also two Roma families in the opposite house (common yard). One was perfect, but the other was annoying (often even until 3 a.m. they played music outside and sang and screamed, so I couldn't sleep and I was very angry with them). I was in Slovakia and saw the slums in which the Roma live, while the Slovaks live in nice houses. The same is the Chánov housing estate here. They completely devastated the houses and there is garbage everywhere like in a dump. Why don't they want to live and work like others? The problem is that not all Roma are bad and many of them really work and live normally - but that reputation puts them at a disadvantage. People just don't trust them. A large minority in the Czech Republic are Vietnamese. There are only two generations here, the older ones don't even speak Czech well, but there are no problems with them. Although they are really a different race (not like the Roma), they are respected. So I don't think it's purely about racism. It's more of a generalization problem. But why do the Vietnamese have a good reputation and the Roma a bad one? A large part of the Roma (although not all) really behave anti-socially and thus created a negative image of the Roma. The decent Roma pay for it in the form of prejudices

I went to Prague in the late 90s (was part of a trip my school offered). I was used to being one of a few Black students in my grade and school but it was in Prague that I had people come up to me consistently asking to touch my hair or skin because I was the first Black person they had seen in person (the answer was always no). I was 14 at the time and my mom had to make sure I was ok with going knowing that I might be the only Black person around during the entire time I was there. I really wanted to travel. And it was not until I returned that my mom told me that there was a lot of talk concerning me joining. My school and the school that we were doing an exchange with were ok to have me join but it almost did not happen because there were a few who were not was ok with me going and staying with a family there. However the family I did stay with was so nice. Had a lot of questions but were respectful. It was a pretty city and to this day I tell people to go if they have the opportunity but it was an interesting experience as a young person.

Man I was accused of stealing from a store I only visited 3 times at night. I usually drop in to purchase a small container of grapes 🍇 to take to work but used their restroom a few times. Last night, a black guy who works there made side remarks to me when they turned the power off to the automatic door in order to lock me in. "Welcome back!" "Oh, it's not you this time." "It's ok. See you next time" I was like, "It's not you this time? What is that supposed to mean? This is the first time the door malfunctioned on me." He said, "I know. It's not you this time." That really pissed me off because each time that I went inside I was treated with disrespect by the African American workers there. I'm black too but they treated me like I was someone who steals on the regular and wash my ass in their bathroom every night. It was really degrading and truly turned me off from shopping there. I don't even get treated like that in Wholefoods or Burlington Coat Factory and I'm there often. The security at Burlington knows my face now but also knows I pay for everything.
