Nah, Kaiba definitely got his money out the mud. He was an orphan, managed to get a billionaire to adopt him, and got said billionaire removed as owner from his own company. Managed to turn the company that used to do arms dealing with other militaries into a profitable worldwide trading card company that lasted for two more series after the original Yu-Gi-Oh. He definitely got robbed for this award.

I actually don't think people understand how unbelievably rich Kaiba is in his respected verse. He literally had his company build an afterlife machine just so he could challenge the Pharoh beyond the grave. Every single season after the original yugioh has tech in it that was influence in some way by Kaiba in every single verse. They literally can't play the game without going through him, and the economy is built off dual monsters. And Kaiba is a true paper chaser.
