When I first watched this music video and heard them sing this song (it has meant a lot to me for many, many years as well), I was laying in a hospital bed, in severe pain from surgery I had earlier that day for kidney cancer. I couldn't sleep, I was in so much pain and so scared. But after seeing this, my tears turned to ones of joy and I was finally able to get some rest. Pentatonix helped me on my road to recovery. Almost two years later, I'm still cancer free and I share this story with every reactor I can. I also got to see PTX in concert last December and was able to share that story with them.

The two soloists on this are Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor, and Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves and is considered by all the other members of Pentatonix to be the best singer in the band. He's known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. When describing a man's vocal range, the term "lyric" means that the actual range is greater than the nominal range. Scott's range starts in the middle of the bass range, on the low end, and extends through most of a normal tenor range on the high end. When the bass is soloing, Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line. According to everyone in Pentatonix, INCLUDING Scott, Scott is the member who is most likely to forget the lyrics, so of COURSE it turned out that his voice was most suited to sing Andrea Bocelli's part in "The Prayer." And no, he doesn't speak Italian; he had to learn this by rote, and he worked very hard to get the pronunciation right. The beatboxer is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable). Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. Note that in this song Kevin is also providing some of the high harmonies. Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, is the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstie sings anywhere from low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun calling her an "alto soprano." Pentatonix has had two bass singers. Their first one was Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his KZbin channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic If you watched the official video of "Hallelujah," Avi was the bass in that one. However, "The Prayer" is a more recent release, so in this video we have Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), who joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018, depending on how you figure it. Matt is another lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix, Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. So it's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a recent live stream of "Hallelujah." You can find one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKLTmZuGltWepcUsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. I don't believe he's at the basso profundo level yet, though I expect him to reach it within a year or two. But on the high end he's near the top of a normal tenor range. In this video, when the camera shows all five of them, from left to right we see Kevin, Kirstie, Scott, Mitch, and Matt.

Nice rundown of the group…very comprehensive! One other thing about the group that I think greatly enhances their astounding musical abilities is the pure joy they seem to have in performing with each other! While each is an individual superstar, this is a case where the total package is absolutely greater than the sum of the individual parts!!!
@margretrosenberg420 Жыл бұрын
@@timcaldwell5241 I believe they think of the entire band as family. The trio are best friends from WAY back, practically siblings; they clearly bonded with Kevin and Avi during _"The Sing-Off"_ and felt it deeply when Avi needed to leave them; and one of the things they looked at with Matt was how well they got along with him when they weren't in public - I think Matt was auditioning not just to join Pentatonix the singing group/business but also to be invited into the family.
@timcaldwell5241 Жыл бұрын
@@margretrosenberg420 I couldn’t agree more…I have a theory on the trio. It’s long been said that there is a real correlation between being a family and harmonizing, especially siblings…I think the trio have been close friends for so long that they instinctually know where the other is going musically, thus the beautiful harmonies. It would only make sense that they would seek the same when they expanded/changed their group. That would also go beyond music…I’ve often said that the only thing that they were more phenomenal at than singing was being good people!
@margretrosenberg420 Жыл бұрын
@@timcaldwell5241 Do you remember the old joke about a tourist in New York asking a stranger on the street how to get to Carnegie Hall? The answer he gets is, "Practice, practice, practice." My feeling is that yes, they do have that sense about each other, but it's most useful when they're writing or arranging music. After that, well, they practice almost constantly, though I'm not sure they think of it as practice - this is how they have fun, after all. I'm not sure how to separate all that practice from the instinctive knowledge of what each one of them is most likely to do. One thing that I'm certain of, however, is that family feeling is the primary thing that makes sure every member gets time in the spotlight.

The guy in the checkered pants is Matt, the bass. Kevin is a fantastic beatboxer - I've never heard better - but one of the reasons his "drums" have such a full sound is that Matt's bass is perfectly synchronized with Kevin's beatboxing.

Pentatonix is best known for their Christmas albums. They have released a Christmas EP or album since 2012, and their fresh, creative arrangements of traditional carols, pop holiday songs and originals were an instant hit. But they built their career with a capella arrangements of current pop hits and later expanded to covers of pop hits from various decades and in many styles -- EDM, Broadway, Motown, K- and J-Pop, etc. Most of their albums include original songs, and they have two albums of almost all originals. The two songs you've reacted to so far are in a similar style, but they have lots of variety to choose from.

Don't apologise for tearing up. I suspect that all Pentaholics have cried listening to many of their songs. There is undeniably something supernatural that happens when these guys sing. Gestalt Psychology encompasses the thought that THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS. As you have commented: every one of these amazing vocalists are quite simply superb when they are doing solo parts. HOWEVER. when their voices blend it is like heaven itself opens and we get to bask in their God given talent. You need to listen to some of their live performances. I know so many people have given you an idea of this group. Fans call themselves Pentaholics! The "trio" Kirsti - soprano, Mitch - contra tenor, and Scott - baritone, grew up together. They met as children and did musical theatre, went on to high school (texas) and sang as a trio in vocal music. Scott was in college at USC and found out about an a capella competition called the Sing Off. The show required a minimum of 5 people. They were introduced to Avi (original bass profundo) and then found Kevin on youtube as a beatboxer playing concert cello. After some persuasion he left Yale medical school and joined them in California to win their season of the show. Kevin also sings tenor beautifully. Avi opted to leave the group (some say it was a friendly parting but it was actually quite ugly!) and they held auditions for a new bass. Matt showed up knowing not just his part for the audition song but the bass part for all of their songs. He is classically trained and also plays drums and keyboards. They were wonderful with both bass singers. (link of the trio in high school kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmO7c4CNh7Bng9k ) (link of kevin beatboxing on cello kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2nZoWOKjdeCqZo )
