I think they were harsh because they strayed from the source material. Thankfully, not as badly as other movies or series. I like the movie. I thought the actor they chose for John/Four was perfect. The problem with changing core principles from the source makes it harder to make sequels. That and it's really hard to convert books to movies especially when it's complex like this series. I will stop rambling now. One more thing and then I will stop. The main thing they strayed in were the powers. They were similar but different in the book which may be inconsequential in the early books but if you read later books. Let's just say there's a reason he's the star of the first book of the series.

It actually is.. there is about 30 or more books that carry the story. They are all very good. The first book that is similar to this movie is better, and some things are different as well. Worth reading.

If there's anybody who enjoyed the movie and the story it is based on a series of YA novels much like The Hunger Games. There's 7 books in the series plus a sequel series. It's a fun read. There's a lot that happens. But you'll be able to see where the characters and story go.

When they made this, it was with the intention of becoming the "next twilight" or "next harry potter" or "next hunger games".. like several other book series turned movies, when they don't perform as well as expected at the box office they scrap the follow ups, like Solomon Kane (which I thought was a great opening movie), they spend a lot of time world building, back story work.. so it being a one and done film it feels incomplete, because it is.
