Rule one: Good men will die. Rule two: Doc can't save everyone. Rule three: Doc will walk through hell to break rules one and two.

I was a medic 91A until I was assigned to an infantry squad. After they found out the medic could shoot straight (36/40) and the medic didn’t quit on a “run until the medic quits” I earned the title Doc. I am as proud of that title as I am any medal gathering dust in box in my office. This song brings back memories, never fired a shot in combat, but the Korean DMZ in the 1980s was not a fun place to be a doc.

I had served overseas and most song never had gotten to me until this one did. I don't talk about what I had been through but I tell you little. I lost my buddy overseas and has he was dying, I told him he was fine and he will make it, that he be going home. Then he slowly passed away. I try my best to compressed my feelings from the war and bothers I have lost but when this song played I was shaken to my core and broke down in tears. There was a lyrics that had to do something that all solders in combat had to do is provide comfort to your bother and lie to them, that they will be fine. I just had to share this to have some closure, without having to talk to someone directly this.

Corpsman turned ICU nurse here, from my early days in this field nearly 19 years ago to now, I swore to myself I’d never tell a pt if they were gonna die. In every school on end of life they tell you to divert or say we will do everything we can. But at my first time working on a clearly dying pt he asked me “Am I dying?” I immediately said “nah you’re gonna be fine”. Felt bad for lying because I didn’t know but you can’t say “I don’t know”. But the look on his face, that peace that hope look” I think let him die hopeful instead of doubting or uncertainty. Idk seems important as they pass. I cried at that point in the song because among my coworkers they think it’s wrong. I don’t.

During my deployment to Iraq some of the combat medics I met were also injured and one killed. Years later I met a Vietnam veteran medic and his experiences were similar. He struggled with things for decades before getting help in his final years. Remember self-care also applies to the helpers.

No matter how tough it gets, or how frequent the nightmares come, remember the why. There’s shit you’ll see and have to do that seem so pointless. In those times remember your “Why”. Thanks for your service young man.

My platoon medic saved my left arm in Vietnam. I was in the hospital when the unit was deactivated. I never got the chance to thank Doc Fields. I spent 13 more years in infantry. Our medics are a special breed. You just can't thank them enough. There are many docs. But combat medics are one of a kind and this song brings it home. If I know you are or were a combat medic, you don't have to buy coffee with me around. Thanks to whoever wrote this.
