My top island distilleries would be Arran, then Tobermory (Ledaig). I really like the Arran Quarter Cask, really good whisky, cask strength and great value for money. When I first opened my Ledaig 10 and Rioja bottles I preferred the Rioja. However, I went back to these recently after not having either of them for about 3 months, now the 10 is coming out on top. They were both opened 17 months ago and now about 1/2 filled. Time and air seem to have thinned out the Rioja a bit. It is still really good though. Cheers!

i have that Rock Island Rum finish and first impressions made me think Benriach Curiositas, although i havent poured them side by yet as my Curiositas is quite low(should've bought a couple before it was discontinued). To me the Ledaig 18 reminded me less of an Islay and more along the lines of Ballechin 10 which makes me wonder if Tobermory uses highland peated malt for Ledaig instead. I going to keep my eye out for the Rock Oyster 18. I suggest you try the Murray McDavid Coastal Embrace 18 if have the opportunity.

Raasay and Lagg are excellent up and comers for this list in future. My left field choice is Jura. It’s not what it was a few years ago but the distillate is greatly underrated; it’s such a shame they generally come at 40%. I’ve had IB offerings of Jura that were phenomenal. I wish they would change to a craft presentation to be inline with the newer players, it could be great.

Thanks for sharing Geoff. Fun (or possibly not) fact: no island whisky on the open shelf nor in bunch in the cabinet awaiting for space on the open shelf. Think the conclusion is/ can be that those have fallen from the radar (enough Highland, Speyside, Campbeltown and Islay to enjoy, so no worries regarding that). Slàinte mhath

First off, this is a cool format with crowdsourcing. I know you mentioned some older bottlings that are worth seeking out (I found old Arran 10 and Arran 14 last week). Are old Glenmorangie bottlings anything special? A dusty store near me has a few and I’ve been debating. On a side note, found a Bowmore 15 Darkest a few weeks ago. It’s been a good month of dusty scotch hunting.
@Gwhisky8 ай бұрын
Glenmo is pretty consistent. I've had some very old bottles of 10, for example, from well before my time. They were good, maybe slightly different, but pretty much the same profile as today's 10s. Oppositely, the Bowmore 15 Darkest, while not brilliant, was better than the sherried 15s of today. Hope that helps! 🥃

hiii, can you do a video for the amateur whiskey drinker who doesn't go through them so quickly about how an "area" ie Spey side translates into a type of whiskey. I don't really get it, owing to having not drunk very many. But it would help when when drinking them to place them in a virtual map in my head and help demystify that cataloguing process. One I do understand is Isla, but hey, that one doesn't leave you guessing.

The main takeaway from the comment section is that many listeners/watchers don't pay attention because despite your explicit distinction between Islay the region and the term "island whiskies" they still couldn't figure out why Islay whiskies were not on the list: "Where's the Ardbeg?" "How come no Laphroaig?" etc., etc. I happen tp pass through Hong Kong and picked up my first Rock Island, a travel retail bottling at 48% and on sale.

Interesting list. Looks like my tastes don’t completely track with the patreons. I’ve just finished a Rock Oyster and it’s a tad too candy sweet and/or the peat element is too simple to properly counter it. I also still have an Arran The Bothy in the old bottle. I’d have to go back to my notes to remember, but it was disappointing. I would have replaced them with Torabhaig Allt Glean. For a 3 year old expression, it’s astoundingly good 3 year old expression. That said, it’s hard to give a lot of credit to lists for me. The Venn Diagram of number of bottles sold and “best whisky lists” just has too much overlap. It’s hard for newer entrants with more limited market share and limited distribution that are better to make it onto these type of lists.
@Gwhisky8 ай бұрын
That's a fair point. I think each patron's personal list would be more interesting than the amalgamation of all their suggestions. Such is the nature of voting! 🥃

Speaking of islands, i noticed a lack of japanese whisky on your channel. Is this because they use screwtops instead of corks, so the bottle score is a 2 at best? Or is there a Taiwan vs Japan rivalry, like how Ireland is jealous of Scotland? Or did your twin pewdiepie already do a comprehensive review 6 years ago?
@Gwhisky8 ай бұрын
I don't buy a lot of Japanese whiskies simply because they don't offer the same bang-for-buck that scotch does. Taiwan is among the best and most affordable places in the world for scotch, so that's where my focus and passion lies. I'll be doing a Nikka NAS side-by-side at some point though.
