I would like to suggest that when someone is arrested AND later found guilty, that the town put them to work caring for and living with the animals for a few days. It might give them a different perspective on these animals. After a few days, they can choose to stay with the animals or go directly to jail.

All the Abrahamic faiths - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - teach that only humans have souls. Individual priests in different faith or sects of faith may be fond of animals, and think that god will look benevolently on people who treat his creations kindly, but none of the Abrahamic faiths accept that animals have souls and will be 'in heaven', or in the same place as people, after their deaths. Religions which have a doctrine of reincarnation at different levels are, I think, the only ones which sincerely believe that animals have souls. But that is not necessarily a good thing, either, as if you believe that animals are 'lower level' souls because they did bad things in past lives, you might think they deserve punishment, too ... Me, I only believe that we have a duty to each other and to all the world around us, to obey the Golden Rule and do the best we can for those living things which suffer or who are less fortunate than ourselves.

As much as I love Takis and know there are wonderful people in Greece, I don't think I could visit Greece knowing so many Greeks seem to care nothing at all about animals.
