Most of the responsibility for helping people in natural disasters FIRST falls on the local & county officials, then the state officials. Federal aid only steps in when the Governor requests aid from the President!! FEMA deals mostly with the infrastructure -- roads, hospitals, schools, then other buildings... For years, most of these jurisdictions have been governed by RW GOPers who tried to underfund the social services safety nets... Now the chickens have come home to roost... Lastly, the Appalachians have been fighting an opoid & other drug epidemics for decades, that has hollowed out their peoples. The looters were LOCAL!!

The Nolichucky is so toxic, both wild animals, and many farm animals that survived the flood and high winds are dying from either eating the new vegetation, or drinking the water. The muck inside peoples homes is making them sick as well. I don't think the French Broad is much better... The Federal "water testers" have told people the well water was"fine", but outside labs have returned test results with over 10 pages of toxic chemicals in the wells. It's a mess, and the Media is complicit. It's deadly to work in much of Western NC and East Tennessee. People are living in tents up in the mountains, with cold, wind and snow. I'm absolutely furious about this situation, and I truly believe this thankfully, outgoing administration is demonic.

"WAKE UP CALL:” Imagine when raining creeks fill w/water, we all witnessed the natural rise of creeks and rivers all our lives during snow melts, thunderstorms, etc. What causes 10 foot surges & increase in depth of that water every 4 hours till a maximum depth 50ft is achieved? Could the cause be opening floodgates on four different dams or more and/or including several gates at a time on extremely large reservoirs which do exist north of this destruction be the reason for those surges that everybody testified in the region? It occurred specifically in North Carolina and Tennessee. What increased that water is they opened the next gates & we get another surge and an additional 10 feet of water with the rivers already full. This is the reality of what happened. There’s no other reason for surge of that proportion in a natural rain in 60+ years on this earth I’ve never witnessed such a surge until this storm surge on top of mountains. It is also the cause for the extreme displacement of anchored buildings to be washed off their foundations. High waters have never done that, only a surge can do that and once you got 40 feet of water full of every type of board, wood, toy, canned goods, bed frames, cars, tractors, trucks, trailers, wagons, campers, propane, tanks, concrete foundation, blocks, blacktop, concrete, bicycles, motorcycles, gas cans, rocks, and trees with the roots intact. Would that not also be the cause of the gorge left in its wake in excess of 20 feet and some locations deeper? Something's not adding up and somebody’s lying and if that’s the case it would explain no government help and a media blackout in order to take the attention off of what really happened. As far as I’m concerned, all guilty parties would do everything and anything to make sure the secret didn’t get out and exposed and complete lack of empathy for human life and media attention creating another problem that the people pulling those levers in those locales not only changed the land geographically permanent, but genocide their own people in their own communities. Neighbors, kin folk, strangers, and anyone in their wake and are directly responsible. The ones who should be under the microscope seen as the guiltiest & 30 people could pull off a catastrophe this large, very very easily. North Carolina and Tennessee have some very evil traitors living among them who will kill hundreds without the blink of an eye. Do not ever generalize in your comments. I am a realtor. I don’t KZbin to make my income. But I have put my work on hold, keeping up with my current contracts, but have started working with the debris removal contractor in Avery and Watauga Counties. Ten to 11 hours a day, every day. I got sick from the dust contamination after the first week and missed a couple of days, so now I wear a mask. I am currently suffering from the worst flu I’ve ever had and am trying my best to get back out there, and feel so guilty that I can’t for a couple more days. Let me also say I am 61 with heart and lung problems. I’m exhausted, I’m worried, insurance paid nothing toward my damage so I will soon be broke. I get yelled at constantly by jerks because our equipment may cause a temporary road block. But I’ve been through a major natural disaster before and I know the fear and horror people are experiencing. I can’t just sit here and do nothing.

I have a little 15 pound rat terrier that was training to be a human remains detection dog and she was doing absolutely fantastic. The people I was working with were very excited about her for situations just like you could’ve taken her on that kayak with you.! Those little dogs can get into any place and they have a great nose on them. I never finished her training because my daughter moved to Alaska, but she had great potential. I think all rescue teams should consider getting a small dog as well.

I feel so bad for those people.. Some bodies will never be found.. What those waters did to those creeks and rivers was a tremendous impact.. Scouring right down to bedrock and then up into the woods and lands that surrounded the water, just ripping everything apart.. Just imagine a body in a blender of trees, houses and multiple types of debris.. May God bless each and every one of you who are searching for those lost souls.. And bless the survivors as well..

"This is the result of opening the top damn and keeping the others closed purposely to flood these areas as the system is meant to open the top and continue to open the others but they only opened one until everything flooded because when the water they let through hit the second one it spread out because it was closed and the water has no other way to go which caused it to over flow and continue to spread and get worse as it encountered every closed damn on the way down flooding out these towns which is also why many of the small creeks and streams are not destroyed but had it been rain it would of also destroyed all creek beds as well as the river beds had it been the rain the creek beds coming down the mountain would have been destroyed and widened and most of the creek beds didn't swell or get any damage only the river channels . Well, I live out of state but all of my family live in Yancey, they are ok. I do have an aunt who lives right by a small creek. As far as I know, the creek didn’t rise up and flood but I haven’t been able to talk to her because she has a landline and it hasn’t been fixed yet. I asked her boys who are older and don’t live with her if the creek did rise up and go over the road and they said they didn’t think so, so I have to wait and ask her. I did hear about some dam I think in Tennessee? That the doors were damaged so it did breach some? And I heard this on social media so…. I don’t know how you would get proof that they actually opened the doors on purpose though. Maybe the damage to that one would be enough to let a lot of water through? If true. Don’t know.
