My daughter just turned six, and in the past month white children at her school have engaged in racist bullying towards her twice. All research shows that most children of color first experience racism at this age. My daughter's Dad and I have had to force her school to reckon with the abuse that she's experienced as there should absolutely be a plan in place to address it, and to create a parent/teacher group to address diversity and inclusion at the school. As a black American in the UK, I have no problem making them uncomfortable until there are concrete changes in place. I'm having none of this and we should all feel that way.

Good that you took it to the school. Such behavior should not be swept under the carpet. Sadly, things like this happen as a reflection of what goes on in society. Again kids are kids and if at an early age, they can be taught that not everyone looks like them and it’s okay, incidences like this will not happen

Would this not happen in the USA also and would you not have dealt with it the same way? I know plenty of parents in the uk who have had to deal with the school on such matters especially predominantly ehite school. I was very fortunate i was the only black child in primary school and i went to 3! Some places lke Newcastle under lyme didnt have any black people at all i was a novelty most of the time in those days durng high school i was one of 9 in a school of 400 i had a few instances but my parents had instilled something in me and i was quick with words and was able to deal accordingly!! And i grew up in a little village in a town where they held national front marches every saturday !

It makes sense from the kids point of view. His friend probably can't wear his hair like that and may have cause some jealously. Since he has curly hair you may want to help him not conform for other people. Accepting and knowing how to handle opposition about his hair at an early age helps with his self esteem while growing up.

I have been a subscriber to Adanna and David’s channel for at least four years maybe more. Their videos always are interesting and heart-warming whether they are doing mundane things like fixing a meal for their boys or having a discussion about relationships or political issues. It is nice to see them RAISING their boys in a thoughtful, compassionate, and love filled manner. The boys are not being raised by technology spending hours in front of the television or an iPad. That behavior chart is brilliant. I am a retired teacher, and I often used a chart like that in my classroom. I loved that parents are using tools like that to discipline and provide accountability with regard to their children’s behavior. It also gets children to be communicative and thoughtful. I tell you I always have a smile on my face at the end of an Adanna and David family video and this one is no different. Thank you Adanna and David for sharing your family and your life with us. I have been blessed by your efforts. 😌😌😌

Facts. Perhaps just a cultural difference though. I don't know a single African American mother in the US who would've taken those braids out. In fact, they would've rocked some form of braid indefinitely, JUST because of the incident, lol! This is the age where our babies start to experience racism for the first time that will carry through their lifetime. So we use every moment to teach our kids when they're young how perfect and dynamic they are JUST the way they are.

David attracts the love of everyone and everything he meets. ❤️ Coco has to be put to bed like the boys. My heart melts whenever I see him interacting with your sons. Noah seems to whine a little more than usual, I hope it doesn’t get to difficult when the baby is born because there will a lot of tears. I appreciate the language you shared with Kian to address the rude little child’s comments about his hair. It appears that some homes don’t teach acceptance of diversity.

I always love watching your videos and I love the idea of a behavior chart. These it can be very helpful. I would make a few suggestions from my work as a behavior therapist. I would recommend to make the behavior a little bit more specific. For example, behaving well in school is more an interpretation of behavior then observable behavior. For now focus on one behavior, for example following up the teachers instructions without complaining or any other behavior that bothers him the most. When he shows no problem anymore with that behavior you can move to the second most bothering behavior. But it is easier to explain to a child what you expect from him specifically rather than behaving well (that has so much components to it). Then the other thing is want to remark collecting smilies for a whole week before getting a reward is a very long time to wait for young children to get their reward. That requires certain cognitive skills that a Noah doesnt have right now. Even waiting until the end of the day might be very long (but you would have to monitor that) But I would suggest a small reward at the end of every day if they have a smiley face. And then keep the movie night for X amount of smilies as the big reward.

A reward every day is a lot. Sometimes acknowledging a specific behaviour with cheers, hugs, and claps are good enough. It's also healthy to not always give tangible rewards. I'm not trying to take away from what you said but balance is good.
@riannekeb.5842
@riannekeb.5842 3 жыл бұрын
@@j.n.8153 hugs and high fives are considerred rewards. You call them social rewards. And I agree that social rewards are more natural than tangible rewards and many times more preferable. However, you always want to make sure it serves as a reward for a child (is it strong enough to encourage the behavior you want to see in a child). I was just trying to make the point that it is very difficult for a 3 year old to remember: I need to listen to the teacher today, otherwise I wont have a smiley today and I need X amount of smileys so I I can have movie night at the end of the week. So my suggestion was to make the duration between showing desireable behavior and the reward much shorter (regardless of the type of reward: tangible or social).

Thank you! But this little boy was affected. The old him he couldn't be apart of whatever he wanted to be apart of. If we're ever going to put a stop to sestimic racism, we need to step up as parents and call a meeting beginning with the head administrator, principal, other childs parents, and include him, teacher all in a school conference meeting meeting, and talk openly about how did that make Keean feel when that little boy told him that. Then ask that little boy why did he say that to Keean.

I just love your videos. Nice SOLID family with morals and values. I also love your addition of the dog. Just can't get used to the licking/kissing in the mouth yet..May God continue to prosper and bless your family! ⚘

Those charts really work! I did something similar with my sons when they were small. They either got a gold star or a small red star (the equivalent of the sad face). They looked forward to the tallying up of stars at the end of each week and really behaved well so they could earn their gold stars.

Hi Adanna, David, Noah and Kian. 😊 Stay strong Kian!!! 🤗 Some children are mean. ☹ And learn certain behaviors from the home. Keep being great parents, Adanna and David!!! ❤
