The great depression ended only "about" 30 years prior to the 1970s. There were still plenty of people alive who's families lost all their money in the banks when the banks failed during the great Depression. I had an uncle who is long long since dead. He feared another bank failure and had cash hidden all over his house as late as the 1970s. He never used a bank again after his family was wiped out when all the banks went bust.
