Carly & Erin, that is ILLEGAL. You can't raise the rent in the state of california more than 10% per given lease period. If they have you month to month, they can legally raise it 10% per month till you move out, but if its a lease offer, it cant legally be higher than 10% of the previous. So if you were paying 2000, it cant be more than 200$.

There may be lawyers or law firms in the area that do pro-bono work, which is free legal advice, get her to see someone for advice. Yeah Carly should check the laws on this. Legally landlords can only raise rent by a certain percentage each renewal. If it's out of that percentage, its definitely illegal. Also, more often than not you can negotiate the rent increase (it's not their favorite thing to have happen) but it's possible. As long as you have a clean record in the building, there's some leeway with that. **These are just tips I picked up through getting apartments and such in LA and if there's someone more qualified you should listen to them but in my experience you can do all of the above if not more..

Seriously, as an adult diarrhea can come on so quickly and if you aren't near a bathroom, then you might just end up crapping your pants. Also, tell Carly and Erin to look up the laws and thoroughly go through the rental agreement. They may be able to get out of it without penalties because the apartment isn't keeping up with things like repairs and safety features. Sometimes it's as simple as writing 3 letters to management for repairs not getting done, other times its going against what the rental agreement said like raising rent too many times in a year and the apartment manager is at fault.
