I grew up never having celebrated my birthday (I grew up as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses) and it was very alienating seeing all of my peer celebrating their lives when I was just stuck telling myself ‘happy birthday’. Kicker is my birthday is 3 days before Christmas. Double depressing.

Reminds me of what my class did in 4th grade. We asked another teacher to have a conference with our home room teacher during lunch, pretending there had been a fight. I’ve only had 1 birthday cake when I was a kid. Well technically it was shared between me and another kid when I was staying at battered women and children’s shelter. I was like 8 I believe. So almost 21 years ago was the last time. It’s rare I get gifts and I cherish them like crazy when I do.
