China's GDP is more than 5 times India's. So there is no way we can pump in cash to buy out the smaller countries the way China does. We are instead adopting a different long term strategic approach which won't yield instant rewards.

Modi's Govt. needs to work harder & smarter to win friends in South Asia. No benefit in pointing to failure of past Governments. Reject the approach of top level visits once in a decade or two. There must be constant contact with neighbours, support for their challenges, support for education (more scholarships eg.), housing & health sectors, etc. Analyse the reasons for India's neighbours turning to China eg. Get to the root cause without fear or favour. Only due diligence can suggest solutions to build trust & confidence for mutual benefit.
