A 3 quotes from NBA legends: "Larry being unathletic - is God's way of making it fair" - Charles Barkley "When you played Michael Jordan, he makes you looked slow -- when you played Larry Bird, he makes you looked stupid." James Worthy And from The coach of the LA Lakers, Pat Riley.... "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird."

LeBron has no team loyalty. He chases championships, jumping to teams he thinks can win. Byrd was drafted by the Celtics, a VERY poor team at the time - and he turned the team around. He had good teammates, but he never had any superstar teammates. He carried the Celtics on his shoulders through his entire career. He could have gone to any team in the league for a fortune more than he was making, but he was loyal to the Celtics through good and bad. Had he been on one of the other “superior”, his numbers, especially championships, would have been astronomical. As it was, his scoring was MUCH lower than it could have been because he was such a selfless player and unselfishly fed his teammates to build their points and to make them integral parts of the team. Last point: would LeBron return to a game to play with a broken cheekbone and a concussion?

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year of his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

Bron says he watched tape of Bird. His top three were MJ, Dr. J. and Bird. Bird says how much he enjoys watching Bron so the beef is fans, not the two of them. Bird never cared about his stats. He cared about the win. He knew his teammates wanted to play, not watch the Bird show so he passed and always gave the ball to the open man. He could score whenever he needed to though.McHale set the Boston record of 56 points in a game. Larry told him he should have gone for sixty cause that wouldn't last. Week later Bird went for sixty himself. McHale was laughing because he knew Larry could turn it on whenever he wanted.

Larry was not only the founding member of the 50/40/90 club, he was a 3-time member. 12-time NBA All-Star out of only 13 seasons, and the 1 year he didn't get it, he only played 6 games. 3 out of 3 winner in the 3-Point contest and the 3-pointer didn't exist when he played college ball. If he hadn't f-ed up his back building a driveway for his mom, he would have played better and longer in those last few years. He did all that in a MUCH more physical era. Today when players couldn't even touch him? He'd kill 'em. TBH, I think a LOT of the players from that time could kill it in todays game.

My co-GOATs are: 1a. Michael Jordan, 1b. Larry Bird. I agree with you that the great players would be great in any era. They would just adapt to the game at that time. And I agree, LeBron would still be one of the greats playing back in the '80s, the only thing that I would say is some of his numbers might not be as big as they are playing in the current era. Back in the 80s and early 90s, the lane was never wide open and it was a much more physical game (the refs let a lot more body and hand checking go). So, his numbers might not have been as big as they are now, but no question with his size and skills he'd still be one of the best players in the league. I also sometimes find it interesting to not just label one GOAT, but to try and choose a starting five. How would this team look: PG Magic, SG MJ, SF Bird, PF Lebron, C Kareem? And of course, others might swap a few of those players and choose someone else. And then you can try and pick a second team and see if you can get a team that is pretty darn close to the first team, despite it being a roster of GOATs. How about as team #2: PG Steph Curry, SG Kobe, SF Durant, PF Duncan, C Wilt. And you could probably put at least 2 or 3 more teams together that would still at least be competitive with those first two teams. Shows how tough it is to actually pick a singular GOAT.

Ive watched the NBA since 1972. By the mid 70s, it seemed like three more players would be tied to cocaine every week. The game seemed like the goal was for a player to get all he could get and the team was just a vehicle for them to do it. I stopped watching in 1976. But, when Magic and Bird came into the league, I went back. The love of the game returned then. Bird and Magic are my favorite players to this day.

Bird would've been incredible in this era with the spacing and more shooting. He'd be similar to Jokic, but quicker and a better shooter, although lacking the same strength. Lebron in the 1980s is an interesting thought experiment. My opinion is that he would've still been a great player, although not as good as today. I think the biggest thing with him is that he's a freak of nature physically. I believe he's the greatest athlete to ever play in the NBA, nobody has really had his combination of agility, strength, and size. One could make the argument that he's among the finest athletes the United States has ever produced, right up there with guys like Danny Hodge, Michael Phelps, and Jessie Owens. My point is that it's hard to predict whether or not he'd stay free of injury in the 1980s NBA. Not only was the game much more physical, but sports medicine was primitive compared to today. Larry Bird's career was destroyed by his back injury and the doctors of the time couldn't resolve this. Back in the day, ACL tears were career threatening, now they take players out for a couple years in extraordinary cases. The only rule change that would really hurt Lebron is the traveling rules, although this tracks for every player. You may have seen the Danny Ainge "Hesi" video with Kevin McHale and McHale called it a travel. Another example is Iverson's crossover which was extremely controversial during the turn of the century since it would've been called a travel just a few years prior. If James Harden didn't adjust to 1980s traveling rules, then he'd average 20+ turnovers a game. You couldn't get away with most crossovers, let alone a step back. Lebron wouldn't fall victim to this as much as other players, but it'd still limit his game a bit. To summarize, barring injury, Lebron would've still been a perennial MVP candidate in the 1980s

Tbf I think when people say guys from this era like say Lebron, couldn’t play back then it’s not because they lack the skills. If anything they have superior skill sets than the average player of previous eras. The reason people say that is because of mentality. Players today, almost through no fault of their own just product of environment in terms of the way the game is called now, are softer. The lack of flagrant fouls meaning you weren’t getting ejected as easy or at all meant harder contact and having to earn the bucket more, on an era we’re the paint was clogged. Hence the notion that the load management era players wouldn’t survive night in night out of that rougher style ball, skills be damned. Whereas certain guys who played back then and really relied heavily on contact especially playing D like a Bill lambeer likely wouldn’t be able to play todays game because well he’d be ineffective defensively if he couldn’t play physically and if he did anyway he’s get tossed

@@coreyrees840 I agree. Kobe would have no problem playing in the '80's. The OP was correct. It isn't about the skill and ability, but whether or not they could handle the mental and physical abuse. Bron fans tend to be the most sensitive about it so it sticks out more. You know "Old Heads" don't know what they are talking about. Jokic, LaBron is better than Larry. No, Larry is better, but it is hard to see because of the differences of today's game compared to the '80's. Not saying LaBron or Jokic is garbage...far from it! They are tremendous talents and even in the '80's would be stars. The Question is would they be legends?? If LaBron came in with the same behaviours he shows today, then no he would not. Jokic played in Europe, so probably would be okay...HoF yes. Neither would be playing for long due to the hard play and medical technology, 12-15 year careers. Kobe, no question, would be fine, not changing a thing. His issue is the lack of iso plays in the '80's Lakers, but I am sure he'd adapt.

You know, the ones that couldn't sit in the front of the bus? Or the ones that couldn't vote? Or the ones that couldn't eat in the same restaurants? Or drink from the same water cooler? Or sit in the same classroom? Shall I go on, or just "get over it" as you'd say. You need to wake up!

@@itsshadbih the sweet sound of nothing but net, lol. If I was playing against him, I would have to concur with your statement. He was a killer, made 1 defender think about suicide after facing him, he didnt need to shoot cause he did so much. I believe it was WC that said: LB played the game the correct way, the way its supposed to be played. LB's stats would be higher if he was selfish with the ball, but all he wanted is for his team to win. 1 steal from a triple double in 3 quarters and takes himself out of the game. I think had like 59 in his career. Nearly undefeated at home. LB was awesome before the NBA, he did things that have no stats for it. Like how many times did he tell defenders exactly what he was going to do, did it and couldnt be stopped? They got away with more back then, but that doesnt mean the greats today arent great, they are. What I dont understand is why LB is so underrated?

The big difference between now and then, is the time and points in the paint. Today’s NBA wouldn’t know what to do with a team like the 80s Celtics. The rules changes would work in favor of today’s style of play, because you can’t even touch a guy without a flagrant foul. The ridiculous three rules would favor players like Michael Cooper because he’s a slightly smaller foward and it would see him given a lot more space. Steph Curry would not have been given any room to work by players like Pippen and Jordan, because they would have bodied him. Today’s players are wussy compared to players of the Bird era and before. They never had to leave practice and go to their real job to make money for their families. They can’t even be touched, or checked or physically bothered in any way. I don’t think that it’s any way to play basketball. You’d never get away with it, at the playground.

Ya man, try watching A Courtship of Rivals, a 4 pt series, and see how Magic and Larry basically saved the NBA. 2 goats, not just in basketball, but in life and their dedication to everything they did, and the inspiration they have given. Whether Larry your goat, or not in your top 20, you can't deny his greatness or his impact....or you're just a shade hater or ignorant.

@@itsshadbih Well if you deny his greatness, which you haven't, then I can't help you. I was actually talking in general to people who say...."oh he's just a hyped up White guy who could only shoot". That would be racist, ignorant or just plain stupidity, none of which I was calling you, nor think you are, not by a long shot. We all know people who haven't even watched Bird play that say those same generic statements about Bird, and even after digging deep into Bird, will still say he wasn't anything great.....I've personally known people like that.
