Simone is a classically trained Mezzo Soprano. She started classical training at the age of 15 and joined Epica aged 17, that was back in 2002. Her tone is unmatched in my opinion. If you want something really heavy from Epica check out the Essence of Silence, official live video.

Personally, I think she's a soprano. The first couple of Epica albums she was definitely a mezzo soprano but since then she's improved more as each album goes by and I think now she's a soprano

Well, she self-identifies as a mezzo. In any case, being a mezzo doesn’t mean she cannot reach the higher notes, she clearly can, it just means she has a rich lower register which she also clearly has. Whatever you want to call her, she is remarkable.

@@mikedown3219 Simone's not a mezzo, she's a soprano. Early on she was told she was mezzo, turns out that wasn't right. The change in her voice came with her new vocal coach, who properly identified her as a soprano and taught her appropriately. Now she doesn't even like to listen to their early stuff, she doesn't like the sound of her voice back then. Which is a little sad, really.

I prefer this version (Omega Alive), but like them both. This version has a dark and minimalist vibe which I think fits the lyrics better.
