As a long-time D&D player whose fellow players always try to go down the route of "Let's talk to the monsters first." it's so unbelievably refreshing to see monsters being treated like monsters. We've gotten so used to "subverting expectations" with monstrous races that actually playing it straight has become novel. Yada yada time is a flat circle.
@joshuawillingham636310 ай бұрын
I get why. In the real world, we're taught not to assign blame to an entire group (or at least most groups, society is still iffy on certain categories). And the fact that D&D and Pathfinder makes many monstrous races playable adds to that. Personally I've found a work around that I'm rather happy with, inspired by by how the tabletops handle demonic entities. Demons/Devils/Deamons are created from the souls of wicked mortals. So in my setting, goblins, orcs, etc are patchworks of shredded souls, leftovers from defeated evil outsiders or scraps from consumed dead soulsnforced together. It's *possible* to redeem them, but it's intensely unlikely since they're cobbled together malicious mortal souls. That said, it's happened before, and once it does happen their children are treated like any other. Maybe they'll have some leftover bad impulses, but other races have that too. So to accommodate the player races there's basically two versions of most of the playable monsters. *Spoiler ahead* Frieren takes a very different path. The demons just have such an absurdly foreign point of view that they can't even really be considered evil from their intentions. They literally can't really understand or relate to the suffering they cause. They are very much a case of blue and orange morality, because for all their intelligence and plotting they just legitimately don't understand why people get mad at them for eating someone who is not them. A demon may even try to do something horrible to someone they've tried to get close to just to try to even understand the concept of guilt, but they just can't.

12:17 for me. Monsters that NEED to eat humans, i wouldn't consider evil, nor would i think humans are evil for trying to kill them/eradicate them, being that, in both sides, it's a survival thing. While if a creature does NOT need to eat humans, and still DOES, eating creature just AS INTELLIGENCE as it is, then it's evil, at least, by human standards. In the case of these demons, they are monsters, closer to the wild beasts/monster like the dragon earlier, than humans, and even tho they DON'T NEED to eat/kill humans, it's part of their nature, and they don't try to refuse it.

This arc serves to really emphasize how the demons are actually monsters and evil. It serve's to illustrate things about the main cast, the world, and things about magic/mages. Demons aren't evil. They are predators. They are no more evil than a wolf would be for hunting a rabbit. Morality isn't a factor they prey on humans because they are monsters and that is what their nature is to do.
@Butane900010 ай бұрын
@@CeliriaRose Except they are evil. The difference between an animal like a wolf or a lion is that it's purely nature without the sentience to back it. Where it's the nature of demons to eat man and use speech to deceive. Their intelligence is what makes them evil because of how they use that intelligence to do certain acts. I can't go into in further depth due to spoilers but demons are evil in the same way we see sociopaths and psychopaths as evil. They are clearly intelligent but lack the emotional understanding to apply that intelligence towards others. This episode is a good example of a demon being evil in the flashback when the demon uses the daughter of the mayor to try to return the daughter she ate. It'd be different if the demon in the flashback had just eaten the family. But she lacked the emotional understanding because they don't have the same emotional intelligence due to how their brains work to understand why it's wrong. We don't hate a starving animal that attacks and eats a person because it's nature for them to do that. We can hate and consider a demon who kills a family to try and take a daughter to give it to their previous victim.

@CeliriaRose10 ай бұрын
@@Butane9000 You are contradicting yourself. You claim it’s their sentience and intelligence that makes them evil but then acknowledge they don’t have the level of intelligence to understand the morality of their actions. Which is why they aren’t evil. Because it has nothing to do with morality. Evil people do things knowing it’s wrong and not caring or believing they are acting for the greater good. Demons have neither of these cases. They act because of their base instincts as a monster. As I said before a wolf hunts prey because thats in it’s nature. It’s nature tells it to hunt to survive. With demons it’s not a case of doing it to survive but it’s still the same concept of being their inherent nature. They are’t hunting humans by choice, they don’t have any real malice towards humans that leads them to prey on them. They are monsters, their nature is to prey on humans and so they prey on humans to suit their base instincts. Same as with the Einsam we saw in episode 4 just they are more clever with their means of hunting. In the case of the demon child in the flashback she desired a quiet existence for the time being and by her nature preyed on humans as a natural response to that the same way a wolf would sate it’s hunger by eating a rabbit or a bear would maul a hunter in self defense. That is all their is to it. No morality just acting on base instinct. She wanted to avoid a current threat, giving them a replacement daughter was her means of doing that. Killing the mayor to do it wasn’t even a blip in her mind. At the end of the day morality is a human concept that applies towards hunans. Demons are not human. They don’t think like humans only imitate in order to prey on them.

the thousand years from now celebration things really hits me in this episode, more so than this being the episode that started me thinking that the elves were youth colonies, that look at celebrations and festivals, people act like traditions have been around forever, but most holiday celebrations are surprisingly young, the exact name of the holidays, when they are held, and what traditions and imagery are followed changes, more often than not the meanings of the images are lost. Imagine 500 years from now it wouldn't be unreasonable to find a winter holiday, Christmas, and people don't remember the significance of the Grinch, only that this green fuzzy man is a common decoration, same as what happened with wreaths, the tree, the log, etc... heck not even a hundred years ago people told ghost stories at Christmas parties, 120 years ago it was nearly unheard of to see a Christmas celebration in the US, so much of what is considered Christmas today in the US is not even a century old, much of it was Baby Boomers *focus on the family* stuff from post WWII, remarketing holidays for the family and children, even Halloween, trick or treating wasn't even a thing till like the 1950s and it was resisted...it was also kind of the previous generation trying to bring back "Raggamuffin day" which I was surprised to learn is still celebrated in parts of places like New York state, along with May day celebrations and others that used to be bigger. But yeah, mere decades can rebrand traditions, all that it takes is at least one or two generations growing up with it that way. Heck look at now, thanks to marketing spreading out sales periods causing massive overlaps in Halloween and Christmas decorations on store shelves, its becoming more common in the US to merge their imagery, families even looking to old world "ghost stories of Christmas" type traditions to incorporate, so its not just Christmas Carol and Nightmare Before Christmas. But we had centuries even of Christmas as an indoor celebration. go back 1000 years to the year 1024 AD. Most of these weren't even a thing, not on the same days, and different things celebrated. There are no doubt thousands of local festivals across Europe that got stamped out (heck the Church tried to stamp out Christmas as a too rowdy holiday), so yeah its a legitimate concern for someone living that long to ask if a celebration will be around even a century later, let alone a thousand years later.

Since DNA testing became a thing we've found dozens upon dozens of cases all across the globe where the DNA exonorated the people who already were executed by the state. There's a rather famous UK case where a policeman was a serial killer and his neighbour was executed for the bodies that were hidden in the building. Even after some evidence came to light that would point towards the policeman, nobody could imagine that a policeman might do something so horrible as to kill people for no reason, so he got off scott free while an innocent person was killed by the state...gross miscarriage of justice is par for the course, so capital punishment is kind of a bad idea in general. The whole BS civility mask people tried to put onto executions also made them extremely expensive. Since they use drugs nowadays, an execution costs more than housing a dozen people in prison for the rest of their lives, and arguably they're more cruel and torturous killing methods than shooting someone in the head.

More often as defense, but there is predatory mimicry, (most predatory mimicry though imitates prey to lure that prey's predators in to eat them, like an angler fish), others however may imitate pheromones and bioluminescence *there is a fire fly that imitates the mating signal of a smaller species to lure them in to eat them*, on the larger scale we don't see as many smell or vocal mimics, although tigers have been known to imitate the calls of prey animals to put them at ease and let their guards down while the tigers hunt. Humans also use vocal mimicry *deer call, deer scent, and the like*, humans are basically fae and monsters to animals. but imagine if some folklore was real, having mimics able to copy a human appearance, and not just the typical urban legend forest mimic that watches humans and mimics basic things like copying a mom's voice to her kids, but can copy complex sentences and read a room to put its prey at ease or trust it before it pounces. I mean at that point you basically have a serial killer that also isn't human.

Honestly, i'm against the death penalty for the same reason i despise politions, hypocrits disgust me to the point it induces vomiting. If the death penalty was fair, then the executioner would also die, because they are also commiting murder.

The Anime is supposedly some chill journey for the characters with lessons about appreciating the world and understanding others. And then you suddenly get hit with a plotline that manipulates human feelings of xenophobia. Something that attaches people to stories is how they are able to relate to said stories. However, there is no such thing as a race of creatures that look exactly like a human and is as intelligent as one, but just wants to murder you because evil. Who exactly is relating with the idea that there's an entire civilization out there that despite having the intelligence for free will, just chooses to eat and murder humans specifically just because? Maybe its the people that call Aboriginals a "different species, trapped in a hunter-gatherer existence." Easterners "naturally inclined to Authoritarianism." and Africans "Naturally lazy and corrupt." Obviously, this is a stretch. But art doesn't exist in a vacuum, and bigoted people would find Frieren's take on Evil as very comforting. After all, *is it not true that today, there are outsiders living within our society, trying to undermine the safety and security of our citizens? Sure, they're not "pure evil" but they are by their evolutionary nature harming our civilization and hurting our children. Do not listen to them, do not negotiate with them, because while they may speak our tongue, and can think just like us, and have their own unique personalities and experiences, it is only to deceive us so they can continue destroying everything we know and love.*

There is no lesson to derive from this plot other than: Some people cannot be reasoned with, and should just be removed. A complete contradiction from everything else the Anime stood for.

Funny how it takes multiple hours of Himmel posing but always ends up with the same standing posed😂 Also Frieren remembering her master like they just met yesterday while everybody think shes a myth is just too lonely. Thankfully, Himmel is a real one and proceeds to state that they exist and this time people will remember us
