If you’ve never added a flat rock to your birdbath, give it a try. Birds like to have a choice in the depth of their bath.

Kay thanks for naming the birds type. The first one what was it, he came again in short while (the light of the day did not change a lot so either it is not the same individual or he decided to leave and come back in few minutes) what was that bird? We don't have in our desert, but we have few varietes and 3 type of dove and common pigion.. I have a big plate like that , terracotta though which is natural colour, though I like the blue one here, but what I hate about this, is pigeons enter inside the plate and dirty it with their dropping some times , I change the water daily (or it dry out completely in the hot summer) .. so I don't know if that hurt other birds if they drink from it with their dropping, plus a bit disgusting to see it, like a little warm (at least it stay together as little worm) Ithink pigion do that because they feel to cool and have the need to do it, but in the place that they drink from!! I thought they would a bit smarter than that.. :)

I have noticed this in our birdbath as well. I read that birds can't tell the depth of the water, and need a safe place to perch while drinking/bathing. Not sure if that is true, but that is what I have observed? Larger birds just plunge right in. I also add rocks that stick out above the water line for insects. The insects can safely walk down to the water line for a drink. Great video, and very helpful! Thank you for posting!

Yes, me too, I feel sorry that I don't always rescue stray bugs (usually it's poor wasps or flies which once on their backs have their wings held by water tension). I found that an old metal paint tray with grey floor paint dried on to it is almost an ideal bird bath the rolled edge is easy to grasp and the incline to roll out the paint roller makes a good ramp for the various birds to choose their depth and the reservoir (deep water portion) can still benefit from a pretty rock perch or few). I put mine on the ground so squirrels and chipmunks and rabbits - or a stray cat can drink too (I ground feed birds their food seed too on bricks here and there so some are always in shade through the day - same with those water dishes).

I always choose a rock that has a portion of it sitting above the water line. That way, bees can also stop and get a needed drink without drowning. If you can't find such a rock, place two rocks, one below the water line and one above.
@Sweetlyfe
@Sweetlyfe 10 ай бұрын
Yes very important, also if you see a bee struggling on your path or like on my deck, they usually can be saved by getting a saucer and mixing some sugar in a small amount of water and put a few drops in front of the bee, and leave it alone and it will be okay and fly off, usually In really hot weather or if they have had to fly a long way without finding pollen/nectar don’t use honey as it can kill the bee colony as it can have pathogens that will harm that colony as it’s not honey from them, or put them on a flower.

I use a rough broken piece of concrete, it is like a gentle slope pyramid but very textured and grippy rough surface. The top is just sticking out of the water. The birbs love it, because it looks so natural and I guess is really safe for their little birb feet to grip it.

I always add rocks in my bird baths. The smaller birds like it and, more especially, the bees appreciate it too. Bees aren’t swimmers and it’s sad to have to rescue them or, more often, see them drowned because they fell in trying to drink from the rim. I don’t like to have dishes with pebbles in shallow water because I often end up with mosquito wrigglers suddenly appearing. There are enough mosquitoes here without giving them a ideal breeding space!

At first I could not interest him in bathing although his bedroom had a small fountain and three shallow bowls. Finally, he edged down my arm and onto my submerged hand to bathe. He was so jubilant at the prospect of our water 'play time' that it became a twice or three time daily routine. Thank you for sharing this sweet footage with us.

Oh, I never thought of a flat, submerged rock. Makes sense! I only added one that sticks out, for birds and bees to land on. Will try to find a realy flat one. 🤔

I use several pot saucers as bird baths. Seems to be the perfect depth as I have both small and larger birds using them with no fear! I had a cement bath with ridges that they loved, but it sprang a leak I couldn’t seem to fix and I couldn’t find another one with the ridges so I put a large saucer on top and they love it! Much easier to clean too. At about an inch and a half, the saucers seem to be the perfect depth. Funny side note: most of the saucers are terra cotta colored and they are used as baths. There is one green one, and they WILL NOT bathe in it, only drink. 🤔

I have this same set up, flat rock, with a little round solar water fountain in the middle. The sound of running water attracks animals. I put fresh water in, everyday, as they splash half of it out. In the summer, squirrels, finches, sparrows, scrub jays, humming birds, and small hawks drink from it.
