They in turn are a subsidiary (owned by) Denso, an automotive parts manufacturer, which itself is only PARTLY owned by Toyota Motor (25% stake) and Toyota Industries (9% stake). Which collectively is a third ownership. Don't spread misinformation but overly simplifying the wikipedia article you didn't read.

Color qr codes could store more information, but would also make things worse, because qr codes are meant to be printed out, and you know how color washes off, or gets duller overtime. Black and white always atay black and white, or at least have enough black to create a qr code.

Exactly. Also there's the problem that you wouldn't be able to scan a colored barcode in dim light or a disco bar due to colors being shifted around. Bad idea overall.

Also, like DataMatrix, you can engraved or laser-etched it, and with laser/IR scanner you can still read it. Colour doesn't work on any of those scenarios

as long as it not complete replacement, I think its fine. it can be used only if it need higher density on specific usecase. ie: digital only qr, single use qr or in a place where its being maintained regularly. and its not likely that it will become complete replacement if it does happen. just like how qr version work today.

Those are called “Frame QR” codes! They've been around since 2018. Denso Wave has official documentation on their website for reading and scanning them if you're interested in generating your own! :)

This could be really handy for label printers. Stuff like the p-touch labels are incredibly reliable and resistant to the elements but they’re label stickers that are constrained by height, so printing a long QR strip works compared to a teeny tiny QR code

At my job I've been working with animated QR codes. Your phone will display several QR codes in sequence on a loop and they collectively contain the data that you want to send to another user. This is handy if you don't have access to wifi or Bluetooth!

Thank f'n christ. As someone who spent years working in pre completed document (forms) automation, we were forced to use PDF417 over QR because big squares just don't work on forms meant for humans, whereas rectangles just become part of the footer. And that's in the context where we were the ones doing the scanning! i.e. I've harboured a resentment towards QRs unnecessary 'squares-only' rule for over 15 years... and been increasingly reminded of it on an ever increasing basis, since before QR meant anything to just about anyone!

Haven't shipping companies used rectangular qr like codes for a long time? I think also plane boarding cards use those too. Different standard, but nothing new and exciting.

Those are PDF417 codes, and they're on the back of drivers' licenses as well. They work better with physical laser scanners than cameras in my experience, though I'm not sure if that's a hardware or software effect.

​​@@MrNerdHairHardware. PDF417 can be read by a simple 1D laser scanner, by physically swiping the laser bar from top to bottom over the barcode. That mattered a lot when handheld barcode scanners with image sensors cost five to ten times what the laser ones did, and you needed to buy enough to kit out all your staff. Nowadays image sensors are as cheap, or cheaper than, laser scanners.

@@MeBadDev Its not possible anymore but back in older android data was more freely shared between apps (apps could see more of what other apps were doing) and I made a qr code that simply contained all the stuff needed to root the phone and instructions to exploit via a very long script. I was playing around alot with sound files and basically made one with the data, then turned it into a QR code. When the sound played, a bug in ffmpeg (that I found myself) would have been triggered and let the instructions in the script run as root with root priveleges. I guess you can see why that was patched. I think that might have been the first serious bug report I made actually.

Or is it just a business doing business?
