Every year I get BSL larvae under my quail hutches. I am always excited to see them because they provide so many benefits. Besides making a great snack for the birds, they do an amazing job of keeping flys at bay and keeping the manure pile manageable.

What a godsend . I think soldier flies and their larvae are tops in the composting world.

No kidding. They are composting machines. I don't think you can find anything better.

After watching this video I went out and check my manure pile, and sure enough there were tons of BSF lavae and the flies themselves on the pile. Thanks for the tip Chris!

I love having BSL around! I made a self harvesting bin last year for my quails, but they were mostly too big for my quails.

I've seen those suckers eat crickets and cockroaches, not sure how BSL would be too large for them.
@LWren-nr6ud
@LWren-nr6ud 5 жыл бұрын
@@suicidewafflez The ones where I live can get over 4cm long and 1.5cm wide and are quite tough, they can eat them if they're just starting to turn brown as they're softer but as soon as they firm up they won't eat them. They will giant cockroaches no problem as they can break them up.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I never thought of that but it makes sense that when they are self harvesting they are much bigger and tougher at that point.

Thank you! I have planned for today to process most of the roosters. They are above and beyond crowing and don't need neighbors complaining. I didn't want to have to process this early but have to keep others in mind with the noise level. :)

@@suicidewafflezThank you for the tip. My quail luckily have a gravity fed water system that is always full and they know how to use it. Feeders are filled morning and night too. My 6 week old roosters I think had flowing hormones. The bright side of processing today my 6 week old hens started laying, we got 2 eggs today! :)

I know what you mean. You might just talk to your neighbors. You might be surprised and find out that it doesn't bother them at all. My neighbors don't care and the one that lives right next door complains when she can't hear them crowing. :)

So you don't even have to seed the manure with black soldier fly eggs? They naturally just show up?

You could buy some BSF larvae to get a jump start on the number of BSF in your pile so they work becomes more effective sooner

Do they help keep any smell down?
@suicidewafflez
@suicidewafflez 5 жыл бұрын
They should overall remove some nitrogen from the manure pile, which will slightly reduce odors. They best way to control odors is by adding carbons and making sure the manure doesn't get too wet.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I think Clyde Lesson gave a good answer. They may help with smell a little but really the best way is to keep it dry and add some carbon to keep it from becoming anaerobic.
