I guess y'all forgot that Zetsu was the one who was watching Naruto and Sasuke fight at the Final Valley the first time. That's never referenced again within a scene to my knowledge and to me Zetsu watching the current Indra and Ashura incarnates fight is the single biggest connective piece to this reveal. The Akatsuki has an interest in Naruto, sure, but they don't have an interest in Sasuke. I think it's possible that Kishimoto had this in mind, though that being said if it was I think the execution could have been better and it's likely there were changes that had to be made to the story that makes it difficult to tell what his original intentions were.

IF not mistaken from a few interview, those zetsu kaguya thing was a last minute retcon. The company know how big the franchise was and they doesn't want it to be ended early. So Kishimoto had to make an open ending so it can be a potential sequel even though without him after Naruto end. And that also why Kishimoto not involve with Boruto (both manga and anime) at least the first half of the franchise. He just come back after Ukiyo (the writer) left the project right before Isshiki fight. And we also can feel the story start to kicked in after Kishimoto came back for Boruto.

They kept mentioning him for pretty much the entire shippuden story, and it was almost always tied to an evil character. My suggestion is, watch Dragon Ball first, watch how Goku grows up and finds his friends and watch his journey, then watch Z, then Daima then Super, then the two movies. There was just one "clue" about black zetsu and it's an extremely vague one. In traditional japanese kabuki theater, there are these guys completely dressed in black called Kuroko (to denote that they're supposed to be invisible) that guide the actors in the set and arrange things in the background and the set so the story plays out smoothly. The way zetsu refers to his plan in vaguely theatrical terms is likely a reference to that, but this is vague enough that it was likely not planned and was just leaned in once the twist was decided. Hagoromo is likely able to make an apparition from Madara's body because Madara possesses his chakra (it's how he awakened hagoromo's rinnegan), so it's like an anchor in that he can use to project himself into the impure world. That's the lower half that Sasuke cut off before Madara got the second eye btw.

They don't explain it in the show or really in the manga. But it is understood by the fandom that due to Haogromos chakra residing in Madara, and even partially in Naruto and Sasuke. He can practically appear in this time and the physical plane. Although his ability to interact and affect the world is extremely limited, most likely based on the amount of his chakra he has access to on the earthly plane.

I disliked the Zetsu reveal at the time, same as most people, but with time I've come to appreciate the reveal more. I think the execution could've been done better, but after some rewatches and thinking back on it, when was Zetsu first introduced? The first time we see the character is after Naruto and Sasuke's fight has concluded at the end of Part 1, revealing that he was actually watching them fight the whole time. As far as I'm aware this is never brought up again within the series which I think is a missed opportunity, because it feels to me like the single biggest piece of connective tissue tying this story to that particular reveal. Why else would he be watching them if not to observe the current Indra and Ashura incarnations? I think it's possible Kishimoto intended something along the lines of this all along, but maybe wasn't sure how to arrive at that point or had to change story details at last minute for any number of reasons. I think that it could have been an amazing reveal that made everyone appreciate Zetsu more as a character, but as it stands I think the execution is lacking

A lot of Naruto is based on Japanese mythology. Jiraya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru are from one. The amaterasu is another, she was a princess in Japanese mythology. I didn't predict Kaguya, but Kishimoto had been sort of foreshadowing via usage of mythology. That's actually quite common in manga, to use mythology. "A Journey to the West" is an ancient tale, but it's been used in Dragonball, one piece, and so many other stories. It's as well known there as Beowolf was for our ancestors. If you've seen that Jackie Chan and Jet Lin movie "The Forbidden Kingdom" that's heavily based on it as well. Just figured you'd like to know since you're into the different connections and lore. it's part of Japanese mythology, but reimagined for Naruto.
