After hearing a little more about this, the PDGA is to blame for this. They told them it was either change to an unrated XMajor like USDGC or change the hole

Should have gone unrated xmajor in that case. I couldnt care less if a major has ratings... Really dissapointed in this change.
@ztsb_koneko3 ай бұрын
Still doesn't make sense from the perspective of the sport as a whole. Why is the PDGA not making an exception? Why are not they looking at the rules to make holes like this OK? Instead of spending years re-designing mando rules...
@davidfoster26293 ай бұрын
The PDGA can't make a good decision when it comes to professional disc golf. The number one thing holding the sport back that is actually immediately changeable. I generally think the DGPT does most things fine ish, but they have an amateur, small time thinking partner in the PDGA who would much rather maintain control of the sport at the professional level, than grow it at the professional level and make it as entertaining as possible.
@justbrowsing52793 ай бұрын
So what was the problem with the x tier option. Everybody loves the USDGC. And it isn't unrated. They get round ratings that just don't count towards player ratings. Everyone is always bashing ratings anyway. This was Jussi's choice and he chose wrong.

Highly agree with the Pro Tour becoming too easy. These open hyzer-style golf courses are getting so boring to watch every week. Those holes are just way too easy for the top guys and it gets very repetitive with little suspense. This does nothing but drive more people away from watching which sucks because disc golf should be so much bigger
@isaacbrown23933 ай бұрын
TOTALLY agree. I don't think that any hole should essentially get a cap on its score. Maybe show some grace and have a drop zone when there's a water carry and someone throws 3 straight shots in the water, and even then, MAYBE. Crazy that they changed this hole. Very disappointing.

I fully agree. Don’t make it easy. I don’t want to justify the hole change but my thought is, what are the other players doing when you have to throw your bag trying to get on the island? They are sitting. Waiting and icing up. I think the change was made for pace of play. If you ask me pace of play is the number one thing player complain about during a round. Soooo… it was a weight of options to me. Is pace of play more important or is being a punishing hole more important?

Play from where you were last inbounds. Your disc must touch inbounds on the island to proceed to the island. Island holes are only cool when they're on natural islands, peninsulas, or river bends. Fake island holes are a sign of bad course design.

@BrodieSmith I think an idea would be give 1 major or 1 DGPT Elite Plus(4 rounds) the Ledgestone Stroke and Distance treatment. (For those that don’t know, 2015? (Simon beat Paul in a playoff, in case I’m on the wrong year) Eureka Temp played all OB shots received 1 penalty shot and gained no distance(no advancing to OB line) I think giving the DGPT 1 event(rotate it even, so it’s not the same event) per year would eliminate the “getting easier” tag

@kimmomatikainen18433 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly when I heard it. One of the best holes I have watched disc golf. I also like to play that hole. Now it got boring. It was also quite an easy hole to play for 4 (par) even for an average amateur player, but could play for birdie even if you don't have a massive distance. Without penalty stroke people sometimes went crazy on that hole and got high 10s on the card, especially younger guys and in AMs. Emptying their bags from distance. And AB didn't really choke on that hole or anything. Every throw that he threw OB were actually good throw. He just made one mistake and threw too fast disc. I was sitting maybe 50-60 ft away then. The one he made to the island green was exactly the same throw, but with a slower disc. Ok, not thinking clearly and not discing down can probably be considered choking, but throws were good. Just bad disc choice. Changed drivers to Zone and it worked.

usdgc is perfect example of making a course very hard makes it great to watch. It should be horrible to watch cause they are playing around a college campus but they force demanding shot after demanding shot and big decisions to be made on most holes. You can feel how important every shot is to the player.
@justbrowsing52793 ай бұрын
They could have just proceed as the hole was as an X tier major. This would still provide pdga sanctioning and round ratings. The only difference is those round ratings wouldn't count towards a players rating. This is how the USDGC operates and no one seems to care. Everyone is always bashing ratings and saying they don't matter anyway. Jussi should have done it this way. Yes the PDGA should have granted the exemption, but not having that exemption shouldn't have stopped Jussi from keeping the hole the same.
@BodaciousBanana693 ай бұрын
First shot OB, go to DZ1 and throw you third that also goes OB, go to DZ2 for your 5th shot which is quite an easy putt. So with two OBs you only get punished with a bogey. This makes the ending stretch a lot less exciting. People who decided to put the drop zone 2 that close, why? Also is it confirmed to be 45 feet, because that looks much more like a 30 footer.

Disc golf needs to have a triple Mando at the ideal landing zones for every hole on tour. Masters of the disc don’t get an excuse. If Tiger, Rory etc. can weave a golf ball on intentional hooks, slices, stingers…there is 0 reason why pro disc golfers cant have the actual disc flight as an expectation to get where they should be. I’ll put $100 towards the charity of your choice if you can prove out why this would do more harm than good when it comes to increasing the challenge and entertainment value of the sport.

Courses should be harder. The issue is wind can really make or break a round. But frankly a good round for the pros should be on fair but interesting holes where 4 under is a good round. Yatta yatta yatta par is relative, "sure". We need more un eagleable par 4 and5's. We need more technical par 4 and 5's. Frankly courses need more strokes. So there are more shots to test the pros on. Look I think the pros should have at most two stock hyzer/ roughly straight but avoid a gardian tree with some movement tee shots a round. We have so many shots. Forehand, back hand, overhand, spike hyzer, hyzer, flat, anhyzer, roller, hyzer flips: to flat to turn to s flight to turn and burn, even to cut roller or just standard roller. Then their is launch angle stuff like frozen rope calvin drives or airshots like wiggins in a distance comp. There are all sorts of discs to be throwing these shapes with too. Like come on. If my quick math is right thats 792 shots between forhand and backhand, shot shape, shot elevation, putter, mid fairway, or distance, and over, under, and stable per disc category. Frankly some shots really aren't possible with everything disc. But still lets assume there are 300 combinations there rather than nearly 800. On a par 54 there are normally 14-20 near full power shots. So lets assume a par 64. At most thats 30 shots that are near max power. Thats 10 tournaments or about 3 months of the season these guys could go without repeating a shot. I mean yes forcing most of those shots its pretty hard. Especially outside of the woods. But still, we canake.the sport much much harder. And none of those 300 shots include things like touch aka not max power, obstructed run up, awkward footings. And the other jazz that adds variety to upshots and putting. Saddly gone are the days when a pro could say yeah 400' is my max placement distance. These days that number is probably more like 450-470 for most guys with guys like gannon, calvin, simon, and ab probably able to claim 500-550'

Brodie: Imagine going to a pro tour course and 'm going to put you on the back tees and you have a 238 yard carry over water. Good luck! I'd say good luck to you as well if you have a 238 yard water carry. Not many people can throw it 714 feet over water. I know you misspoke but I agree that some of the courses just seem really soft. I go to Hornets Nest, Nevin, Renaissance Gold in Charlotte and play the long tees when I'm feeling confident in my game and my confidence is usually crushed halfway through the course. The courses should be very difficult for the average disc golfer. I've played Winthrop as well and thought that was kind of soft. You can shred there if you can have 350-400ft well placed shots.

Hot take, but I disagree. I like that they are trying to change this. Is this too easy. Sure. I can agree that there are better ways to change it. But the Bunker rule was dumb. It is completely unique rule set that is played nowhere else in the world. I don’t like that. I’d have liked to see the DZ 2 being at the tip of the in bounds area. So it’s still a 200 ft shot. And they still lose strokes for missing the island. Lastly, I don’t know many players who are aiming to take a +2 on a hole that averages under par like 16 at Euro Open.
