Welcome to AASB 2-18! This is a series of videos that will give a overview and insight into the AmTrac school house in Camp Pendleton.
So all of our previous episodes led up to this right here - finally driving the AAV. Here me and the class go through the basic drivers course and then head out to the field to begin our first field opp!

Boy this brings back memories from 1977, the LVT-P7 Amtracs we had back then we much different 1st generation vehicles. We had the M-95 50 cal gun, no bow deflector, no ad-on armor, no fancy uniforms . Hell I was issued the green utility uniform and a camo uniform, junk combat boots, everything we had was so ancient . The Marine Corps was pretty poor back then and more old school.

The weapon system from from the early days of the LVTP-7 was the M85 50 caliber mot the M 95 as stated... 1982 - 1987... YATYAS!!

Here in Italy, we have a fleet of about 40 AAV7s. They were fielded back in 76' as a NATO upgrade to the standard since we were still operating the Buffalo's or LVT MK4 from Korea war. They are divided into two battalions, one is the San Marco Btg., the other one is the Lagunari Company near Venice where I live. I served for my one-year military service back in 1990', they still were the LVTP7 generation, long before the SLEP upgrade (service life extension program),now they are going through the SU upgrade for survivability modifications against the IED,same hull from the early '70s, at the end of their service these Amtracks have served for more than 60 years.

@@exiledbantuking Delta Company 3rd Tank Bn was my first duty station 1979-1983. I was there the night Delta House took place. There used to be a Drive In movie theater just outside the main gate. Animal house was playing. We were on a 96 and a bunch went to the movie on Sunday night. They came back to the barracks (bldg 1602 I tihnk) around 0100 and started tearing the barrack apart. Painted Delta House on the outside of the barracks. Our barraxks was right beside the BN Headshed and it didn't take long to for the activity to bring aorind the OD. OD came and we chased him off throwing beer bottles and rocks at him. He called for a full Guard Mount, Guard and the MPs surrounded the barracks. All the door were locked and no one would open them. Everyone shamed the DNCO (CPL Yohe) into not unlocking the barracks. Around 0230 everyone jumped in their racks and pretended to be asleep.. By the time the DNCO unlocked the doors, the BN CO (Lt Col Sparks) XO and Sgt Maj were there. They went throught he barracks rousing up everyone, asking for ID cards and trying to take statements. Not one single Marine dropped a dime on anyone. They were so pissed at us. The BN XO secured our liberty and at 0600 Sunday monring we were in PT gear running the tank trails up behind the base head shed. That sand was two feet deep. We ran until around 0730. Six or Eight marines fell out to puke. We spent the rest of Sunday cleaning the barrakcs and trying to get that paint off the wall. Someone had the bright idea to go to ramp and get a angle grinder with the wire brush cup to grind the paint off. It took the paint off but left nearly permanent markings on the wall. Since our liberty had been secured we got monday monring and went to the ramp as usual. Just us. I left for Okinawa the follwoing spring, Thanks for memory

Man so they were serious about moving it to the squad bays right next to the guard barracks lol 😂 as a legendary tracker, I got so good at breaking track in 29 and even banging the finals in every possible ditch I find. Real men don’t cross steer lol

I was a 2141. Attended the school in 1990. A lot's changed, I don't recognize any places in the video. Is that up north by San Onorfre? We never left the 21 Area.

1iar we now travel around the southern half of the Camp Pendleton area. Outside of specific 1833 stuff, mechs now do the same thing as operators. Then we head into specific 2141 training. Excellent program out there

What does an officer do in the 18XX(AAV) field? Currently enlisted in aviation and looking to go into the officer route and I'm interested in AAV if given the opportunity.

Well John...I’m truthfully not 100% certain. Most officers I’d say do typical officer related roles (planning and logistics) and then are boots on the ground to oversee the mission. I’d try to find a tracker unit nearby and ask someone in person.

Yes I believe so I wouldn’t see why not. It’s not very common to see a 2141 female Marine but I don’t see a reason why not

Cole O’Neill 2141 is the mechanic and 1833 is the operator. One fixes it the other one breaks it
