Good review. I'd like to add that the horrors of battle only make up about a quarter of the movie. There is a long chapter devoted to recruitment and training and the narrators recount it with a lot of humor. You began boot camp with no more than the clothes on your back and at the end of it you could march for miles carrying 50 lbs. of equipment. You see closeups of the canned food they ate and the vintage labels on the cans. This is during the era of the Titanic. I was amazed how many men said when you weren't in battle, it was actually fun--like being on a Boy Scout adventure with real guns and equipment. The camaraderie was huge and they mentioned that the Germans they captured were pretty decent guys, too. There was a tremendous anticipation one month when they saw tons of equipment being railroaded in and they knew something big was going to happen. Some secret weapon was going to be used for the first time and they asked what are those hulks on the field--the answer was--"they're tanks". There is a long extra on the DVD explaining how the old film was restored.

I am 71 and perhaps not many of us left who had a FATHER in WW1 not that he ever told me anything about it as i was only 6 when he died. He was a sergeant in the Lancashire Fusiliers and was gassed I wish he could have told me something because this war will be forgotten one day by the people and become devalued as other events in history have been devalued as will happen with WW2.This film is important in that it was fought for reasons of one country not wishing to be overpowered in the military sense by another super power, and just as in Iraq where there were no W.M.D. hence the assassination of Ferdinand not the "real" reason for WW1 and our leaders are STILL using manufactured events to begin war.we must change and become civilized or die.

“If I served in this war and fell into that pool of faeces I would have fucking quit!” This isn’t a modern war where you get to quit if don’t like how things are going, you would be shot for desertion.

The so called voice overs were recorded by the BBC in the 1960s and were used in the film nearly60 years later.

These were recordings of actual veterans of the trenches. Weren't "passionate" but I suppose people back then weren't as emotionally incontinent as they are nowadays.

Great review. I just want to say that even now we Brits are fairly matter of fact when talking about things compared to people in North America and I think that was even more the case back in the early 1900's, so that probably explains the monotony of some of the voiceover. I am glad to see that a lot of people from around the world have seen this film though.

It's a phenomenally good documentary. He gives those men their humanity back
