"UNIVERSE" IS HEAVENLY. The whole Universe album is a GENDER NEUTRAL one and every song is Gorgeous. THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THIS SAMMY. "Ropes" here symbolizes the struggles they are going through and are trying to solve it(SEHUN trying to figure out the knitting wool or ropes), trying get out of it (by untangling, drawing ropes, and knots). Being tied by the ropes, but in the last scene KAI being free from the struggles. The "Hands Intertwined" symbolizes the 9 members holding each other. CHANYEOL wrote a song called "Hands"(Concert performance), where he stated about 8 hands holding onto him during his struggles. The "Cup of Coffee" symbolizes the warmth and the universe. Offering the cup of coffee to towards the other member, love and support to the loved ones, filling in the emptiness and giving warmth during the Winter. EXO MVs are art full of symbolisms (like a painting that uses simple imageries but holds a deeper meaning). People may think they're unrelated to the lyrics but boy they are wrong. You just have to find the artist in you to interpret them. You also must keep in mind that EXO is a concept-centered group so all their MVs are related to each other. They tell the story of how the boys who originally came from the EXO Planet were sent to Earth by a dark force to live amongst humans, depicting their struggles of being "different" (because they have superpowers and all), their search for love and purpose, and how they do their best to get through everything together to find happiness in the world where they really belong. This alien concept may sound a little funny at first but if you look at it differently, it's a reflection of how each of us is unique in our own way but we have to conceal our true selves to fit into the "norm". We all work hard to please other people, to meet their expectations, and to get recognized by them that we forget the true meaning of love and happiness. We aimlessly live everyday, clueless of our purpose. It's like living in a world where you don't belong.

The focus at end is not the cup...it was d rope finally untangled. The painting with lines tangled became simple straight line. The ropes tied up to Jongin broke.. The shirt which he was having a hard time taking off was finally gone off... Them being tangled with each other finally went okay...and now sitting with each other. The coffee depicts emotions, change in feelings, transformation of moods, social life, friends, reuniting with friends and high spirits to achieve something in life. The whole MV has a lot of symbolism. Universe is a song about a person who unintentionally hurt his friend by his words and regrets the pain he caused. The guilt tied him and he keeps looking for a way to bring back the good memories that he mistakenly erased. The symbolisms and metaphors were simply about life...that even things suddenly went wrong and tangled...all we have to do is to get a cup of coffee..think about things...till u'll find d solution...

The music video has a theory which is symbolising the unfinished coffee in the cups as the trials and the experiments they do to succeed but they are not satisfied yet. The huge complicated ball of thread symbolises just their complicated life of trying out different ways to succeed. Then after the bridge comes they finally found the right way for them! You can see the boys finally smiling and drinking their coffee while chatting and the complicated painting became a straight line painting and every thing became clear for them they found the perfect coffee (way to succeed) for them!

I think Universe's MV is really visually resonant. At the start of the MV where we see the surface of the foam on the coffee with little dots of bubbles, it kinda looks like what the universe dotted with stars looks like. There's also an instance where a shot of the coffee machine emitting smoke transitions into a shot of D.O standing within the smoke, and then another one of the white sheet behind Suho cascading down as we transition into a shot where the milk clouds in the cup of coffee. Other than that, I'm only just now finding out in the comments about the cosmic latte thing, and it makes sense actually. It's so cool. As for the ropes, well, the lyrics of the song had a lot of mentions on struggles, so I'm guessing the ropes tie into that. The other comments have pretty much said everything else I think, lol. Universe is my favorite out of all their Winter albums' title tracks, so thank you for this reaction :> You should definitely check out more of their Winter releases. It's a different side to EXO.

Don't you notice that everyone is entangled in their own problems? They are knotted or stuck in their own conflicts and in the end the message is that everything can be resolved with a cup of coffee and good friends to help you, who does not feel better when they chat and share a cup of coffee with someone than in Can I really hear you? Kai runs confused, they offer him many cups of coffee but he does not drink any he is asleep and he does not notice them for me this means that you can have many hands that help you but there are times when you are so "entangled" in your problems that you do not realize that there are people around you who can help you. I've been listening to this song/watching this mv hundreds of time but I just realized it by now. The rope, doodle and picture of loops symbolize their struggles and how they are trapped by their memories of the past (like from one of the lyrics, "memories always bring tears"). The coffee, on the other hand, symbolizes new beginning like how we drink coffee every morning, after waking up. It was like you are telling the person to move forward by offering a cup of coffee, and accepting it means that you accept your past and obstacles in life and that you are now ready to face a new day or a new start with your loved ones (in this mv, of course it's with their brothers, EXO) that's why they are all smiling in the latter part of the mv. This is just my opinion hehe

Although, I struggle to follow and really articulate all that is happening in the storyline in "Universe", as with everything to do with EXO, there are a few scenes that I know are trying to make connections to EXO's storyline. The most obvious point is that in the lyrics they are talking about "Searching the Universe" for that lost or missing love. So you can see how that parallels how EXO are searching the universe for the Tree of Life and for a way to fix everything that is going wrong, etc. "Universe" is the title track on EXO's Universe album and it's one of EXO's winter albums, so that is why it's a ballad. Up until the last couple of years, EXO used to come out with 3 to 4 albums a year -- a summer album that was more of their mainstream hype songs and a repackaged album a few weeks later, and then, in the winter, they would release another album that was more of a holiday album and it was all slower ballad songs. But for the last couple of years EXO's first comeback of the year hasn't been until the end of the year -- for example, Don't Mess Up My Tempo was released in November 2018 and the Obsession album didn't come out until November 2019. So, I guess, because the first album and repackage were released so late in the year, SM decided that releasing a winter holiday album would just be too soon after the other album. So we haven't gotten a new winter album for 2 years now. Which I think is a shame because EXO's ballads are really beautiful and I enjoy them almost more than their other songs. The theme of the MV is “cafe universe" and one theory is that the story is being told through coffee metaphors. Fun fact: EXO's official fan color is Cosmic Latte which is thought to be why this whole MV uses the creamy tan and brown tones and why it is centred around coffee. First off, in order to understand what is happening in the MV, you should be aware that the story is not unfolding in chronological order. The plot is more like an explanation of feelings than a straight storyline. One theory is that the coffee is a metaphor for the feelings of bitterness. Two guys share a coffee, but they both hate its bitter taste. They think that if they add something to it, it will be less bitter. One person (Chanyeol) wanted to fix things by making it sweet, so he decided to add sugar. The other guy (Suho) tries to fix things with a more mellow, smooth approach, so he adds milk or cream to the coffee. However, there are limits to everything and even when you have the best of intentions, you can take things too far. As the leader of the group, Suho wants to smooth things over so he keeps adding milk as he tries to cover the bitterness, but in doing so it also masks the sweetness of the sugar and the pure taste of the coffee. So this is where you see the cup overflow as it is so overpowered by everything being added to it. By covering the bitterness with an overwhelming amount of cream and sugar it has now made the coffee something neither one wants to drink. So in other words, making hasty decisions without considering others feelings, viewpoints and opinions will ruin relationships in the process. The story seems to primarily focus on Suho, Chanyeol, and Sehun. Some theories say that it looks as though Suho and Chanyeol are not in good terms. Which is thought to be a continuation of how we saw Chanyeol and Suho fighting in "Sing For You," but instead of solving the conflict by talking it out, they turn their backs and build a wall around the problem. At one point you see Chanyeol with his back turned and his cup sitting upside down, and he is staring blankly at an empty spot, which is thought to be Suho's place. The conflict is affecting their friendship as a group and Sehun wants to help his friends. But it is unclear what Suho and Chanyeol are really fight about because they are hiding their true feelings and are passivagressivly pretending like everything is OK. This is where Kai, Baekhyun, Chen, and Xiumin enter the plot. Some theories have interpreted the teaser images from "Universe" as showing the members split up into two groups. It is thought that Chen, Baekhyun, Xiumin and Kai represent the internal struggles of the group because we see them in the MV and in the teaser images for "Universe" sitting at the table almost as if they are restless and struggling to come up with an answer for how to fix things or to smooth things over, etc. And the other members -- Suho, Chanyeol, D.O. and Sehun -- represent the physical manifestation of that conflict. Sehun figures that if he understands his friends' (Suho and Chanyeol) internal struggles he can figure out how to fix things. Sehun's internal struggle is depicted by Xiumin who contemplates how he can fix his friends’ mistakes (Kai and Baekhyun). You see Xiumin sitting at the table with a glass of water and tissue paper. Mirroring the problems caused by Chanyeol and Suho, we see Baekhyun add too much sugar to the coffee and Kai adds too much milk to the cup and spills the coffee. However, Xiumin seems to have come up with a solution: water can dilute the sugar and make it less sweet and the tissue can clean up the spilled coffee. D.O. and Chen are the two that are thought to represent the bitterness of the coffee in their parallel groups. Chen scribbles on the paper almost as if this represents the internal struggle that the group is going through, as if the pain, emotion and conflict is just a big mess that they are struggling to work out. Kai (who is representing Suho's internal struggles) blames himself as the reason for Chen's scribbles (Chen represents the coffee's bitterness, which is the problems within the group). Kai's (Suho's internal struggle) guilt becomes so encompassing that it turned those scribbles into physical ropes that tied him up and traped him. At one point you see Kai sitting at the table covered with cups of coffee. Each cup is different and that is thought to represent a different memory of moments in their friendship. Each memory is unique and special, but Kai seems to be overwhelmed by it all. He sits with his head on the table trying to sort out all his feelings and emotions, etc. But if you notice, what he is focused on the entire time is the plate of sugar cubes. But before Kai's guilt (Suho's internal struggle) can really consume him, Sehun steps in and gives him a new cup of coffee. Allowing Kai to have the chance to start over. Sehun also handed Kai a saucer with sugar cubes. He knows that Kai's (Suho's) regret is rooted in the fact that he was not able to give his friend Baekhyun (Chanyeol) the simple taste of sweet coffee. Which is a metaphor for not being able to provide a simple fix to their problems. If Kai (Suho) can make the coffee the perfect amount of sweet for Baekhyun (Chanyeol) this time he may be able to move on and stop holding on to the guilt, regret and anger, etc. which will help to resolve the conflict within the group. Also, it seems as though parts of the story are being told from Kai's point of view. Some theories also think that this connects to the story in their "Sing For You" MV as well. If you remember in "Sing For You," Kai was the one that seemed to be interpreting the emotions in that MV through his dance, so some say he is also the interpreter of what is happening in "Universe." Next you see that the table becomes empty and the only things remaining are the sugar cubes, the cup of coffee and the glass of water. Some say the sugar represents their ability to carefully create a sweeter future, while the water is a reminder not to repeat past mistakes. In the end, Kai decides not to add anything to the coffee, and instead, he gives Baekhyun the coffee in its pure black bitter form. Because he has now learned that there is no reason for them to keep trying to change each other. As bitter as life can be, they come to the conclusion that they should accept its imperfections -- that in friendships, there will be struggles and misunderstandings, but sugarcoating it or pretending that everything is watered down or milky good, isn't being honest with themselves. Which is what is really happening within Suho and Chanyeol -- they may be sitting next to each other but deep inside, they're opposing one another as shown through Kai and Baekhyun's actions. On the surface it seems as though the members are all talking about their friendships and the struggles they had over the past few years. But, as we have discovered with many of EXO's songs, SM has actually been planning their song releases and MV storylines since their pre-debut days, way back in 2012, as we hear in EXO's pre-debut teasers. So, if that is the case, then that was before EXO had even gone through any of their major struggles as a group, so I think the meaning of "Universe" may have evolved only because we as listeners have reinterpreted it to fit a new narrative. That's the beauty of songs like this, you can interpret it however you want and make it fit whatever story you want or need it to.

to surmise: exo’s official color for them and the fanbase is cosmic latte, or the color of the universe. this song talks about their emotions tangled in regards to their love and who the person they love is their universe. the video draws parallelism between the coffee shots (the steam from the milk, milk being poured, coffee beans being grounded (the dust is coffee btw!)), which is chosen due to the ties to the fan base and the word latte, to images of the members standing in similar scenery: baekhyun in the rippling milk, kyungsoo(DO) in the steam, and junmyeon(suho) with the curtain falling (the milk entering the coffee). these parallels are to symbolize how they are stuck within the universe and how they are searching for someone (shown by the very sparse scenery to represent how they are alone). the rope is the physical manifestation of their knotted emotions, so at first, because their emotions are tangled, we see shots of jongin(kai) held down by ropes, sehun looking at the painting of the ropes, jongdae(chen) untangling the yarn, and the members intertwined together. at the end, they realize thats these mixed and painful emotions are part of what makes love significant, as they strive to find their universe/person they love.bat this point we see a thematic shift: the coffee and milk splashing on the screen and the ropes cut down, and the painting changing from twisted yarn to a single simple dash. this is to represent them understanding their emotions which is also shown in the lyrics. because this (the journey) is love.

universe has so many interpretations...in the whole mv they're sad, stuck on ropes, seeing messy paitings, chanyeol is stuck on his clothes, and kai running without a reason, while the situation match with the coffee being made, and when the coffee is done and served to someone (i don't know who are maybe chanyeol?) and he gives to baekhyun and everything gets better, they're now smiling, the painting is now clean, chanyeol can finally get free, everything is okay now, the coffe is like a methafore of struggles between lovers, you can resolve every situation with calm and delicacy (that's my interpretation)

Universe is about discovering yourself after a struggle and tangled of emotions.... Its about how you solve your troubles which was shown with the help of knots and all the things that weren't easily undone... Like Chanyeol getting stuck in his clothes... But eventually you find your way and your preferences and you lead towards a better happy life... It was shown by the coffee that they liked later... And how Chanyeol could come out... Every mess getting solved... You should read the lyrics for Universe to know it better... Obsession had the concept of EXO and X-EXO... Where EXO are the good ones and the X-EXO are their dopplegangers who are evil... Or the red force followers... It is all part of a concept or EXO multiverse you can say... Which you would know better if you react to MAMA, their debut song... EXO has superpowers according to their concept... So that's why the good and bad and every MV is connected to a storyline...

Thank u for reacting to EXO!! But talking about logo, Actually, the logo in the cup, that's their logo in their winter albums(something like a snowflake), they use different logos based on the theme of their album, like in The War album(Ko Ko Bop in it), they use birds of paradise flower forming the EXO logo, and in Obsession, the flags that u can see E X O also. They have their main logo and that's the hexagon one with EXO in it(that btw, designed by chanyeol) that also on the fans lightsticks.
