I promise I'm not trying to be a smartass, but I think that might've been the premise of the joke in this video. Lol. That's what made me laugh so much in this video. It's hilarious listening to someone speaking English almost unintelligibly talk about how Portuguese would be unintelligible to Spanish speakers and vice versa. I think it was the premise because Limmy really hammed up his accent to the max for this video. Lol.
@VegaIllusion Жыл бұрын
@@iamstickfigure It could be. I haven’t been keeping up with Limmy but I haven’t heard this thick of an accent since the stuff he was doing on his show way back. He’s a clever guy, so it is possible that at least part of the joke was about that, but I’m not sure how well acquainted he is with the differences between Spanish and Portuguese. I mean, they share over 89% of the vocabulary, and in the Americas they share even more if you ask me. Ironically, they do have a relationship similar to English and Scots.
@eucherenkov Жыл бұрын
As a portuguese person, I can tell you with a high degree of confidence that the vast majority of Portuguese people understand Spanish well enough, but the reverse is not the case. A lot of spanish people would tell you the exact same thing. Anecdote: I've lived in Portugal all my life and I'm currently in college for philosophy. One of my professors invited a spanish professor to give us a lecture about spanish philosophy recently, and while we could understand her just fine, she could barely understand us and frequently had to ask my professor to serve as an intermediary. It's an interesting phenomenon that I think is equal-parts founded on culture, and also on phonetic differences between the two languages (that I think play in our favor when it comes to understanding and speaking other languages). This also ties into the fact that portuguese people are generally adept at speaking basic levels of other languages, where in Spain or France, English-speaking tourists often report an inability (and sometimes unwillingness) of the locals to speak English. Source: ̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶v̶o̶i̶c̶e̶s̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶d̶ Born in Portugal and have lived here my whole life; plenty of interactions with spaniards. With that said, yeah, it took me a couple of watches of the entirety of the Limmy show + a few streams to fully understand the madman.
@eucherenkov Жыл бұрын
@@iamstickfigure Nah, I think the premise of the joke here is just that brits and americans who know that brazilians speak Portuguese and not Spanish are smartasses who like to flaunt that knowledge as if it's some sort of little known fact.

Man when i come across tourists around here i legit just ask them to talk in English, it's less insulting than assuming we talk Spanish like the other Latinos to me

Lyrics: You know what language they speak in Argentina? Spanish. You know what language they speak in Peru? Spanish. You know what language they speak in Mexico? Spanish. Guess what language they speak in Brazil. Nope. Portuguese. They speak Portuguese in Brazil. Brazil and Argentina. Pretty next to each other. But if you put a guy from Brazil in a room with a guy from Argentina, one wouldn't know what the other is talking about, wouldn't he? Or what? Start fighting? Kill each other? So if you ever go on a holiday in Brazil (you won't, that's miles away), if you went for a meal, and the waiter puts the food down on your table and you wanna say thanks, don't say "gracias" (that's Spanish), you say "obrigado". Portuguese. Speak Portuguese in Brazil. So if you ever find yourself in a room full of smartasses, and one of them mentions Brazil, say to them: "Brazil? They speak Portuguese out there, didn't it?" Oh, you should see their faces. They're not as smartass as you, son. Did you know that if you go to the bookies and you put a bet on a horse, and you win, you don't at all have to pay it. That has nothing to do with Brazil, but you don't have to pay it. Don't have to pay a penny at all. You don't have to pay but, didn't it? Well, pft, I bit of a personal week, wouldn't it? Wouldn't you pay a place that doesn't pay you, pft.

Fun fact: Spanish and Portuguese are closer than the language Limmy speaks and English.

Limmy taught me how to understand Scottish English as English isn't my first language. I'm working as a pharmacist, and 1 of our patient is Scottish with a thick accent. Not a problem for me

you love to see a rare positive story about someone letting themselves learn to understand the accent instead of mocking what they don't understand

The entire joke is the unspoken parallel between Scotland and England, where many English speakers will not be able to understand Limmy though he’s speaking English.
