The main character is based on Osamu Dazai, a crazy writer who unsuccessfully tried to kill himself in various ways four times, and then finally succeeded. Three of those with women. First a waitress, who died in the river while he survived. Then with his wife later, but they both survived the pills. He remarried later - but incredibly, he had several different women in his life. Then he abandoned his second wife, daughter and son, and moved in with a war widow. And in less than a year, they committed suicide together, by drowning in a river. Her name was Tomie Yamazaki. The woman in the beginning of this anime. Oh, and he also got addicted to morphine at one point and in his last year to alcohol.
