I always liked how at the beginning of the video it shows Richard intently focused at the mixing board. Richard never gets enough credit! Without his talents the Carpenters never would have existed.

Great reaction Maddie. Those female harmonies are HER voice as well. Objective measurements (Wings Of Pegasus) show she has perfect pitch (NO auto tune in 70s, etc.). The most beautiful voice - ever, due largely to her control, low range and unique haunting sound. Listen to I Can Dream Cant I, a 1939 ballad from their Horizons album. She extends many notes that make her a natural with WWII era big band music. You will also greatly appreciate This Masquerade, Solitaire, I Know I Need To Be In Love, A Place To Hide Away, Hurting Each Other, and their Christmas Portrait album including Merry Christmas Darling. She passed in Feb '83 at age 32 after a long battle with anorexia. Truly gifted and talented.

At the time she was popular many of us thought of The Carpenters as kind of superficial 'bubblegum' (an actual musical niche) kind of band. Many of us preferred the Rolling Stones, Cream, and other bands that were a bit more darker. But Karen's perfect voice has more than stood the test of time. She is truly one of the best singers of her or any other time. I think, for me, it is the silky tonal quality above all other aspects of her beautiful voice. It is so sad she died from complications of an eating disorder. Thanks for your reaction!

Given the date maybe I was in a Star Wars mood, I don’t remember. 😂 I think you already reacted to Rainy Days & Mondays, my fave Carp. song. Session drummer and multi instrumentalist Jim Gordon played drums on this track. For a severe case of whiplash, search out the discography of material that this guy has contributed to. Jim’s story is one of extreme glittering highs, and down right sad lows. He’d been a misdiagnosed schizophrenic for years…and while a HUGELY talented utility/touring musician, well…I’m just gonna leave it right there. Check out the song Solitaire by Carpenters. Jim once again is on drums for this one too.

I highly doubt you will be disappointed. Trust me.

Interesting you mention the lively drumming. No, Karen didn't play drums on this; Jim Gordon did. Jim is famous for playing with over a hundred artist as a studio musician as well as playing in bands, Derek and the dominos, and Traffic. His girlfriend at the time, Rita Coolidge, is uncredited with writing the famous piano part in "Lala" although Jim took credit for it. Jim is infamous for killing his mother with a hammer and then stabbing her to death in 1983. He was convicted of murder later found to be schizophrenic. He lived the rest of his days in a mental institution never to be released. He just died in 2023. You can't make this stuff up.

Looks like the singles with Karen's drumming are: "Ticket to Ride", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", and "Please Mr. Postman". Other than those, most of the others are Hal Blaine. "Only Yesterday" was their first single where the drumming wasn't either Karen or Hal.
