Efren "BATA" Reyes went to the United States to hustle. At a very young age, he played pool for a living. When he is considered a top class player in his homeland, but not yet internationally recognized, he went to the United States to hustle. He ended up winning almost every tournament there and shocked everyone with his one of a kind stroke and incredible shooting skills. He won the 1994 US open 9-ball championship defeating every opponent along the way. He even became the number 1 ranked pool player in the pro billiards tour.

I remember watching this match. It has aged well. From 1990-2000, I had the opportunity to meet and compete against the best. (I was just an amateur, but I got lucky a few matches). Jim Rempe was one of the guys I enjoyed playing against and watching. He was a bit of a ham, during this match. Usually he was more reserved. You can tell Efren had him rattled, early on. 😆 Efren, on the other hand, was still just becoming known here, in the States, by the TV audience. He was already, in a class of his own even then. @:22 "I don't know how he did that!" It's not as hard, as it looks, but Efren makes it look so easy. (I was also an instructor, for 10 years.) The key is to strike the cueball high, with a flat cue. This raises the object ball ever so slightly* off the table, as it passes the 8-ball. * (Since the balls are round), only the center edge, of the 7-ball, needs to clear the center edge of the 8-ball.

The reason Efren hit the ball so hard on that second shot is because he was using follow. If he hit it slower it was likely to scratch. When using follow or draw, the harder you hit the cue ball, the further along the tangent line it will travel before taking effect. Efren knows this. In other words the follow had no effect on the cue ball after hitting the object ball until after it hit the first rail. These shots do come up once in a blue moon. Even a lot of good players don't know this Ive found. Efren is not your average good player. Another thing a lot of good players neglect is the diamond system. Efren is a master of that too.

Yes, two legends, but what a rash shot by Rempe, his only inexcusable mistake there, trying to down the 9 off the two ball.
